I have always loved a 3" barreled revolver and this is no exception. I watched your video, did a little research and ordered this revolver. It makes a dandy woods companion. Very little recoil and in a last forever solid platform. Ruger makes some very nice revolvers and you make some great videos. Thanks for all you do and have a very Merry Christmas with your family.
Missing you Jeff, but hope that you are resting well up-Above ';-) Just got my "Your" tribute model #270 and have your S&W Shield with the Green CT Laser from your estate as one of my ccw's! GREAT Review and Video! Thanks, Mike~
I love shooting the 44 Special caliber. Most of rounds I fire in 44mags are specials. Two or three boxes of rounds shot in one setting is not a problem due to the lighter recoil and it's still a respectable punch.
I have always been a big fan of the .44 special. It's power and accuracy make for an excellent defensive cartridge, and it can do anything the larger .45 Colt can do ( and then some ). Elmer Keith would have loved this gun.
I am partial to the .44 special and .38 special, I do like magnum revolvers, but there is something more charming and simplistic about straight chamberings in classing revolver cartridges.
THIS is a great idea! Long time coming. Thank you Ruger. Looks like the trigger has been improved too, along with the sights. I have been wanting a 3" GP in 357, but now i will get this instead. I love the 44 Spl, and i am sure this is more durable than my Rossi 720, which is a good gun. Now we need an alloy frame version to shave off 6 oz or so. Thanks for showing the BB 190 gr soft cast HP. That should be ideal. Hope they get added to the CA roster soon
Excellent presentation and review! You covered everything quite nicely . Gosh..darn it .......I LIKE that Ruger GP100 in .44 special . I’m liking revolvers more and more. I’m in Glens Falls ,NY (foothills to the Adirondacks)
Jeff ... I really enjoy your videos, straight forward, honest commentary and great shooting ! I am surprised you don't have 1 million subscribers. Please keep up the great work, close-ups, slow mo, etc.

Always enjoy your reviews,Jeff.I have the Wiley Clapp edition of the Ruger GP100 in .357 mag.,it's by far my favorite handgun.BTW, a shoutout to your brother, for his outstanding work on the Mandelin:).
I was excited for this video. I love my Smith&Wesson Model 69, a five shot .44 magnum on an L frame. I'm not sure why Ruger couldn't make a 5 shot .44Mag if Taurus and S&W can.
Claude Herbert wellthe DA on my wife's old 686, like my m29 are both pretty stiff. My GP100, like the Redhawk, is VERY light feeling, but not nearly as smooth. The break at the end isn't the best, but I mean the pull itself. My Gp100 has the second best DA I have (next to my Rossi .44 magnum snubbie, amazing trigger on that gun, I got really lucky).
ravissary79 One of the reasons the triggers on your Rugers aren't nearly as smooth as the S&W's is because of the coil main springs. The leaf springs in my 686-4 and your old S&W'S make for a pull that is smooth as silk compared to the Rugers.
Claude Herbert smooth maybe, but very very stiff. I suppose it's because they need to be broken in more. I've noticed that when hot and dirty they are much easier to shoot. But when cold and fresh and clean , they are stiff as hell when I dry fire them. If anything my ruger is the reverse, it's smooth when cold and clean, and it starts to get a little stiffer and starts to get sticky when very hot.
I am still waiting for a 4.2" bbl 44 special. That should get the velocity up near 900 fps with a 200 gr gold dot which I have a lot of for my 629. I bought a GP 100, 6", almost ten years ago and had it converted to 10mm auto by Clements Custom Guns. It will shoot 40 S&W and I bought 1600 rds of it for target practice when it was $56 for 200 rds at Walmart. Like you say, it is a very strong gun. The top strap is thicker than on my S&W 629 44 mag.
Love me some .44 special, and I have several guns that will shoot it, including single-shot rifles and an older lever action Marlin ported carbine. Fun to shoot and reload. That's a nice looking Ruger. Good to know they've taken some extra care with the trigger pull, too. Yesterday I loaded up a bunch of .44 special rounds using Trail Boss powder. I just measured how deep my 240 gr lead SWC bullet sat in a cartridge, sawed the cartridge off a bit below that, and soldered a heavy paper clip around the base of the case for a dipper handle. I used that to dip the Trail Boss and pour it into the cases I was reloading. Right off the bat, it shot to point of aim at 15 yards with mild recoil out of my S&W 629 with a 4-inch barrel. Yeeehaw! ;-) Also, if might make a suggestion, your close-ups are nice and helpful, but if you take a nice clean fine bristled brush and brush over the area you're shooting, you''ll get rid of most if not all of the dust and other fine debris that detracts from the otherwise nice images. Many thanks.
I have a Charter Arms snubbie in .44 special.........2,000 rounds through it and no problems..........definitely gonna get a Ruger GP .44 special too.........
Great Caliber for a Self Defence Conceal Carry Gun, Hoping that the 44 Special Factory Ammunition for it, Starts to become available & Less costly, For people buying the New Ruger Pistol etc.
Great revolver- Got one in Lay-away at Buds Gun shop 613.00 was the price have in it after I get it out o Lay-away in Feb 2018. Again great video on a fantastic CCW weapon...
my Brother had a 41 magnum stainless Redhawk with a 5 inch barrel ,you could feel the blast when you shot it.it was a fine revolver I don't know what he did with it. he was always swapping and tradeing guns .no telling what he swapped it for ,we have a small gun show every Saturday in a little auto shop / machine shop .the owner builds AR style rifles and sells them .and 1911 type pistols,I need to go over one weekend and check it out.its just on the other side of the mountain ,but each Saturday when I think about it I am already gone off some place doing something else.most times I'm in the woods already hunting mushrooms or salamanders with my grandkids or fishing .or just hikeing the AT with my Son he wants to hike up to Maine on the trail.but I'm not hikeing out of the county .LOL
Nice! I hope it catches on! This is just a personal quirk with me, but for some reason, non-fluted cylinders have never appealed to me from an aesthetic standpoint. I'm not sure much fluting would be possible, given the space they had to work with. Again, it's just a personal quirk, kinds like forward serrations on a semi-auto handgun which I never warmed to.
very nice. interesting timing or coincidence that FC45LC and thorsaxe did their 44 special series and now ruger gives us this. seeing what they were able to do with 44spl, and now this coming to market has me thinking i need a 44 spl. and since it's a revolver, might actually be able to but one in CA. and way to go Jeff on getting 5 rounds on target in under a second. :-)
*Besides S&W. I think Ruger is at the top of their game in the revolver department. Little tanks they are, I'm proud to own a fine American product like Ruger. God bless, all.*
I really enjoy all the different guns you test out along with loads , factory and handloads... I too am a fan of the .44 spl.. fine ctg.. Recently i bought a box of TrueShot 310 grain gas checked bullets made by Oregon Trail Bullets.. Have you fired this bullet in any of your .44 mags?
As a reloader this gun makes more sense for myself. Factory level loads for fun, hotter loads for more fun. Only thing missing is 327 mag. Ruger if your listening how about a Super Redhawk 8 shot in 357 mag./360 Dan Wesson.
Octavious Black I'd like to see a big bore LCR and I've emailed them about it, done surveys and asked for it, but to no avail, we get a pistol that's almost as heavy as a 44 mag and a 3" barrel. James Lagnese indeed, a full size LCR would be genius. Just scale up the tech and refine the style. In a new 21st century GP-LCR, they could offer 5 calibers in one frame and it would still offer smooth DA, light weight, and because the frame is modular, it means they could keep manufacturing costs low.
Jeffrey Townsend considering a Ruger revolver's strength I wonder if it could handle someone reaming out the cylinder chambers another 0.10 inches. I think the frame and cylinder could handle it
@Lion Phoenix with the Model 69 and a five shot cylinder, Smith and Wesson found a way to make .44 Magnum work on an L-Frame. They're selling a lot of them with no sign of stopping.

Not bad. Rather just get a Charter Arms 44 special for more than half the cost and "good enough" for CCW. Well, the new production Charter Arms and Early Production ones are good and well made.
Probably because Ruger already has a short barrel Redhawk with a 2 3/4" barrel in .44 Mag..larger frame..this GP100 is a little smaller frame and a little lighter in weight.

I’ve been drooling over one of these at my local gun shop, great review sir!
I like that. I have the .357 mag in 3". It is one of my favorite guns. The GP100 doesn't get as much credit as it deserves. It is a very solid gun.

Expensive as hell. Might look at a S&W 69 in that price range. I was hoping Ruger would make a LCR type of revolver in 45LC or 44 Special.

I have a Ruger GP100 in 357 Magnum. Is this 44 special more powerful than the 357? Also what is the list price for this gun?
$829 US.
The 44 fires a heavier bullet, and makes a larger hole, but there is nothing wrong with the 357.

Overgrown the Super Redhawk Alaskan doesn't seem much bigger, already is .44 Magnum, can already fire Specials and gives you one more round.
