That is a very thinly populated area, I doubt that Stanley has 300 residents this time of the year. That park, which has an excellent ghost town is even more empty. It's a long way to even a small town.
Hey neighbor. I was in Challis, standing in the parts store when the 83' Borah Peak struck. I think it was a 6.9. I still have this vision of the parts shelves swaying like ocean waves. We didn't feel yesterday's here in Pocatello.
Thanks for the update! Would love to get your take on the 4.1 one we had this morning off the coast of Boston too, although I know you are very busy getting ready to leave for Hawaii so totally understand if you don’t have time. Thanks again!
I have visited that old gold dredge back in 2017. Never would have thought that it might be in an earthquake active area. It fun to see that area being showed in an video from you. As always, good and easy understandable explanation 👍
Thanks for the report, Shawn. Interestingly, we experienced a 3.8 earthquake jus off the coast from York, Maine USA, felt widely according to the news.
Thank you for a great report on the Idaho earthquake. I hiked and explored a good bit in the central mountains as a much younger person. I had no inkling of the fascinating geology under foot, just that it was fun and beautiful.
Idaho geology is fascinating to me and there, are a lot more faults than one would think. It's best that someone else drives when I go to southern ID because I'm too busy looking at the amazing roadside.
Thanks Shawn. I've been to Custer 3-4 times over the decades. I heard several years ago about reclamation efforts aimed at salmon migration. The earthquake gives me another reason to see what things look like today.
There was also a Quake quite a bit north in near Banff canada that was quite notable as well.... It was just over 24 hours ago so it is not on your USGS map by default
Neat and informative video! I was working in my 3rd floor office in Meridian. Mixed reports from coworkers if they noticed it or not. Most of my immediate team did! I felt the building sway from NE to SW. Felt similar to the 7-point-something Searles Valley quakes in California (2019, I believe) I experienced while outside a coffee shop near Brea. Kind if like being in a carnival ride that just stopped and you feel the side-to-side swaying. Just not as intense. As an east coast native, it catches me off guard! Made for an interesting Monday morning.
I just found your channel, so happy! I'm and avid geology nut, and Solar/Geo-Magnetic Science nerd. I moved to Jerome in June. I didn't feel any shaking. I did have a heavy feeling day that I couldnt shake off today tho. Subbed! Nice to "meet" you.
Your video was so rich in information and incredibly easy to understand. I’m really glad I found your channel! Earthmaster on RUclips mentioned that the earthquake occurred due to strain against the Intermountain Western regions, pressing up against the North American craton. He suggests it’s strictly tectonic stress caused by pressure on the West Coast. He also speculates that this could lead to bigger activity in the near future, possibly involving the southern Cascadia Subduction Zone. What are your thoughts on this?
I was sitting at the computer and did not fee it! After living in Asia for several years, I feel like I am pretty sensitive to feeling them but missed this one somehow.
It's not quite the same area, but my understanding is that the Tetons are still rising a measurable amount each year and the lowlands to the east are also falling at the same time. Why aren't there more significant earthquakes associated with this?
I wonder if anybody in Hagerrman, Idaho felt this. I lived there in 1947-1949 and don't remember ever feeling one. I think it would have scared me at age 7 to 9 years.
Good thing that it happened now, not a few days from now, when you would have been thousands of miles away. We're you able to feel this earthquake at all where you are?
As you may know living in Idaho there is a scattering of hot springs in the south mountainous Idaho region. I'd be curious if this earthquake affected any of those hotsprings?
Hi Shawn, I've recently come back from Sardinia. There were various stones and rocks on the beach, which I would have liked to have been able to identify. There are apps for identifying flora but not for geology. Do you think it possible to design such an app to identify rocks and minerals?
@@nicholasstokes8330 for Android from the Google Play store Rock identifier works good for me there's a couple different ones on there when I use all I can tell you for sure is this brown lol lol they keep trying to get you to take a free 7-Day premium trial you know and then extend to remember but if you just x out of that it just goes to a standard free version with unlimited identifications that uses your phone's camera to take a picture of the specimen and then you can save it to your collection once it and sometimes it'll give you multiple choices for the identification.....
I like this kind of low stakes video where something interesting happened, but there's no injuries, deaths or damage. I hope The Algorithm agrees enough that you end up deciding it is worth making more.

Hi Shawn! Neat. Stanley has hot springs, too. Also one 3.8 East Coast, unusual for there....York, Maine.
Thanks for the update! It’s always interesting to see the “beach ball” analysis.

Off the coast of York, Maine, actually. 😉
*3.8
@ yes, you are correct!!
@@johnschmidt2958 some said 4.1 earlier today, but I had not checked to see if it had been updated since.
Myron Cook had an interesting video about the activity on the East Coast of the US.

Good to hear your voice! Thank you!
So jealous of the place you live… so much amazing geology thank you for this update. Hope you’re well now
It was a pretty good shake in downtown Ketchum. Back and forth a couple of times and that was it.
Yikes .
Idaho geology is fascinating to me and there, are a lot more faults than one would think. It's best that someone else drives when I go to southern ID because I'm too busy looking at the amazing roadside.
Yep me too. Gawking at scenery much easier at 55mph as long as there's no backup of annoyed drivers behind me.

Thanks for the update, Shawn. Your videos are always really interesting.
Terrific that Shaun posted this very informative report, as it was about the first thing I saw when reviewing mail etc for the day.
Thanks for the update!

awsome info . Idaho is a fascinating place
I was dreaming in Boise and was not awakened by the quake!
Thanks Prof Willsey!
I live near Christchurch New Zealand, we became very provicient at guessing what magnitude a shake like that one would feel like!

Love to see you cover the one in Maine today, they feel strong here because of the bedrock being granite

on the USGS satellite view of the earthquake location, it looks like a massive landslide happened there before
Is that what that was.... the carport roofs were humming weird this morning.

I saw the EQ on the USGS website and immediately thought of you wondering if you had felt it.
Shawn, did you feel the quake ???
Nope. Too far away here in Twin Falls.
Southern East Coast Maine this morning.

I forgot … yesterday, almost due north of the Idaho event, Banff had a 4.2
Great update
We had one in our backyard today in New England (on your map) everyone was like "did you feel it" but we didn't feel this one here.
Thank you!

3.8? When I saw that on the national news, I thought it was a joke. It is only a sidebar here in LA
Cool. So not too far from the Challis site of ? Stanley - did the Stanley Stomp in 1978. Didn't start an earthquake, though.
A few years ago.I think it was a 4.5 N.Alabama. Felt and sounded like a truck rolled through.Kinda weird 😊
Will you discuss the York, Maine one as well?

Thanks for your clear analysis and explanation, Shawn! Did you feel that earthquake in Twin Falls? À bientôt ! :)
I missed it 😴. I hadn’t even seen the news. I did not feel anything (in central Boise).
Could this be connected to the earthquake in BC/AB Canada. I can't recall the exact spot. Yesterday I think.
Don’t think so.
Hey..liked this video. Also....does a 6.5 quake in that area of Idaho have some volcanic activity??
Good thing that it happened now, not a few days from now, when you would have been thousands of miles away.
We're you able to feel this earthquake at all where you are?
Nope. Twin is further than Boise. And were have more weak, soft volcanic rock under our feet.
Also one off Massachusetts near Boston. Jersey had one this weekend

Maine 3.8 hit an hour and few minutes before the Idaho 4.2

No.
I’m originally from CA, I didn’t notice anything here. I think I’m calibrated to feel things larger than a 5.0 😂
Do you know of any somewhat obscure caves in the pocatello or idaho falls area that has water flowing through it?
No

No. Much too far away and unrelated.

Again? Idaho shakes often.
Is this the west side of the Yellowstone magma chamber?
No. That is several hundred miles away. Totally unrelated.
