I wonder what a seamstress from the Victorian era would think about people making clothes as a hobby in a time of ready to wear fashion! You make such lovely neat stitches.
Oh my goodness that method of marking darts is genius. I struggle getting darts to line up so much, and it never occured to me to just baste them flat and tighten like that. Definitely going to try that next time I have to sew some!
As a Jew obsessed with dress history and literature, this project has been so inspiring. (The 1860s is even one of my favorite eras of fashion!) Daniel Deronda will absolutely be my next read, and I may just have to find a way to cosplay Mirah myself. Bravo, V!
The dress came out gorgeous! Also it looked like a fun party! And when you sat on the floor with the dress poofed up, it looked to me like one of those cakes with a Barbie in it and the cake is the skirt. 🤣
It reminds me of the bit in *North and South* when Margaret is trying on her evening gown and makes it "balloon out like a cheese", to her mother's annoyance.
@@Xzagobag North and South, the novel by Elizabeth Gaskell. I think it was made into a miniseries but I haven't watched it. There's a completely different American television series by that name, about the Civil War, I believe.
I’ve never read Daniel Deronda…I should. Thank you for doing this - your video and social commentary is a treasure. Thank you ❤️ Oh, and the dress? Chef’s kiss!
Thank you so much! Yes, definitely do read it. I'll admit to finding the philosophical sections slow as that's less of an interest of mine, but Eliot's writing is just excellent.
I didn't really follow any of this - but it's really enjoyable watching someone do something complicated with lots of competence. And now, having realised I have no idea how sewing machines work, I'm off to find more slo-mo footage of them in action...
What a great party!! Similar to what happened after retiring to a drawing room with close friends, I imagine. Beautiful work on this dress, and as always thank you for your activism 🌱
I figure the "retiring to a drawing room" didn't usually involve ditching the dresses and hanging out in our underthings-- which happened not long after. But yes, 19th century people had just as many silly party games as us :D
I don’t know if you’ve ever been introduced to the All-of-a kind Family book series by Sydney Taylor, but if not you should definitely check them out. It’s a series of children’s books based on the author’s childhood growing up in the Jewish community on New York’s upper east side around the turn of the century. Omygoodness 😍😍😍 I just love how this came out. Absolutely beautiful. I love the idea of faux pleats. Everything about this is just beautiful. I love how you are kicking the whole Dickens Fair strike deal in the rear and joining up with your friends and celebrating all the things you love about Dickens fair. This is me living vicariously through you. Its even better that you are joining in in a Christmas party even though you are Jewish. I love how we can embrace our friends no matter what the holiday, no matter what our religion. Its a beautiful thing. Just like your dress. I think you out shone everyone. I look forward to seeing the day time version of this dress. You have me hooked. I want to see the "Jewess" get her happy ending.
I'm really happy for the chance to keep momentum for the strike going! It seemed like it would be easy to forget with Fair being mostly-canceled, but I'm glad it's been getting some press.
It's such a good book! When I go back to look for excerpts I notice so many details I missed the first time. I feel like it's one of those books that will take to re-reading beautifully 💚
Absolutely gorgeous! The silk is luscious, the lace is perfection, the poof is fantastic! You look radiant! And then you sang! 🤩 This is probably my favorite of your videos now!
Shot silk is *amazing* like that. It's a super bright minty green that would be too chipper for me on its own, but the other color is this soft beige and it goes from candy pastel to complex and sophisticated.
I like what you did with it and it suits you well. I could never get away with such a color. It would be fun to do a bodice with sleeves and a more closed neckline for a future wedding or prom dress project.
The idea for the boning channel at the center back is awesome! I'm going to have to remember that one. And the way you do the darts is genius. I need to remember both techniques. Happy Winter Holidays.
It's interesting that I learned of 3 new sewing techniques in 2 different videos released yesterday. Your 2 and then how to sew a tube without the hassle of trying to turn it. Overall, just an awesome day.

Oh my gosh, now I'm going to be listening for it every time I watch one of your videos! Honestly I think there is no human this sort of neckline wouldn't look amazing on.
OMG I'm doing research for an Alice In Wonderland-themed dress for The Dickens Fair and when I heard that you go, I immediately saved this video for later reference lol

“The gown, perhaps deliberately, was not described - but I’m sewing one for her anyway.” If there’s one thing you _can_ assume about most literary characters in most scenes, it’s that they’re wearing clothes, and if they’re not described you can generally assume that there’s nothing particularly remarkable about the clothes.
I love this color! And I agree, take the best part of Dickens fair, and leave the rest. YAY! Jews at Christmas! It goes with the dress and the story. Can't wait for the daytime dress!
I think the irony was, out of all the people at this party, a sizeable majority were Jewish 🤣 When planning we had a chat about it and decided to try to use just "Christmas" traditions that were swiped from various pagan practices.
I'm still only half way thru the video, but before I forget, I wanted to say: I love the hidden boning channel in the back; and crochet cotton is great for eyelets, but if you need a better color match, try lizbeth tatting thread in size 10 or 20, handy hands has a catalog. Ok back to the video!
Thank you! Now that I've figured out that method for boning channels I'm gonna use it on *everything* . Especially the fiddly front closure of the day bodice!
12:29 I love this little dress up sequence. That corset is stunning. What is it made of? I love the little 'jellyfish' jumps at 12:50 and the skirt ballooning at 13:16. Very adorable. You did an amazing job on the gown.
This gown is absolutely beautiful. The color seems unassuming until the light hits it. Did you choose that on purpose for Mirah’s characterization? Also, “Jewish impudence”!? Oof. I’m not Jewish but I can imagine how much that hurts. I’m a shy, anxious femme presenting Latine, and the “Spicy Latina” stereotype keeps popping up. Poor Mirah. I’m so glad that the novel is kind to her.
Thank you so much! This color is such an interesting one to film. I chose it because I fell in love with it and figured something that would work on Mirah (described as a dark-eyed brunette) probably wouldn't work on me, but I love that explanation and I'm going with it :D George Eliot seriously impresses me with her ability to accurately write the sort of microaggressions that people usually only notice when they're on the receiving end.
