"this is what you do when you have a chronic illness. you make things work, even if that doesn't look the way it would for other people." thank you! as someone who has had major depression for years now, this really resonates with me. (i know that depression and fibromyalgia are worlds different, but what you said still meant a lot to me.) i appreciate how open you are about the fact that you have to do things differently than other people, and that it's okay.
Depression is as much an illness at its heart as any. It effects your health, your outlook on life, and your ability to take joy in life. I pray you have a community of support around you to remind - even in the dark moments - that you are loved for you, and that your presence is precious.
i love to see someone who looks like me (not only physically but the fybromealgia and chronic illnesses as well) and who is jewish, just living their life out there, proud to be who they are. this inspires me to act up when i see something antisemitic, and to always be proud of being jewish and my heritage.
Gorgeous dress and great technique. As a descendant of Polish and German ancestry, I take special joy in showing love to the Jewish people. M y ancestors escaped war torn Europe in the early 1900's and both of my grandparents were born here. The atrocities that the Jewish nation has endured since the beginning of time should not be forgotten and in the present day there is not enough one can do to atone for these things other than to stand with modern Jews and show them nothing but love and respect. God has blessed the Jews and He has tempered the nation thru their plights. I pray that you find only blessings and joy in spite of physical difficulties (health issues) and negative attitudes that are still prevalent to this day. I enjoy your beautiful work and informative videos. I hope your health will improve so that you can continue your work giving us many many more of your thoughtful and insightful videos. You educate us all in more ways than just sewing. God Bless and good health to you.
I can barely tack together badges, I have no clue what most of what you said means and Im honestly not interested in victorian dresses, but your videos are edited in such a relaxing way. You are so honest, open, calm and unapologetically there as yourself. Its so wonderful to watch. Thanks for the great video.
I'm glad you were able to make something beautiful for yourself in these hard times. This bodice looks both delicate and comfortable, the gathering is really nice!
Thanks V, for a very inspiring video! In my view you have all the rights and many reasons to be proud. From the beautiful historical clothing you make (like this bodice), and the knowledge you share, to your persistence to continue despite challenges, and the inspiration you bring us all. 👏👏👏
I love this "when you have a chronic illness, you make things work. Even if that's doesn't look the way it would for other people." Best advice ever. 😊While I don't have a chronic illness is so have chronic pain. Between my scoliosis and a couple of car accidents, in have my days where the pain can be incapacitating. I'm not sure if i'm brave enough to see in bed since I have small children, but I might be tempted to try sitting on the couch. I had a recent flare up in my neck where I couldn't hardly lift my arm without pain shooting down my back and arm. I used it as an excuse to not get anything done and ignore the brand new sewing machine I treated myself to. Between you and Marika from Enchanted Rose, is felt my excuse has been inadequate. So I suffered through it and got some things done. I might hardly be able to brush my chair, but I don't need to lift my arm up to sew something together. Though I didn't put out anything nearly as amazing as your day bodice. I love how it turned out too. Absolutely gorgeous. 😍 Its so pretty. You look amazing in that color too. I'm thrilled to see your "Jewess" get the amazing dress she so rightfully deserves. ❤️❤️ I know you said no bits of advice, but I do have one tiny but. Since you had a medical treatment, I think you need to spoil yourself just a little bit. Medical procedures are never fun. So maybe treat yourself to some more pretty fabric for another fabulous project. Like I said spoil yourself. 😉 I was wondering since you have been so gracious to share your Jewish culture with us, if you would do some more videos on some of your other holidays, such a the Pass Over. How do modern Jews celebrate these age old celebrations and all. I feel like Hanukkah gets all the attention but never anything else. ❤️
Beautiful work, as always. Thanks for sharing the realities of bedrest and existing as Jewish. I’m inspired to try either reading or watching Daniel Deronda. And hooray to a site! The transcripts are a particularly nice touch, I depend on subtitles and transcripts.
I said this on the skirt video, but as a jew with a laundry list of conditions, including severe fibromyalgia, and an interest in historical textiles and fibre arts, this series (and channel in general) is a kind of representation I didn't know I needed. I'm SO glad I found it.
I feel your timing of this project in light of current events could not be better. The individuals who experienced the events in Texas deserve to see that regardless of the world’s attempts to subjugate and harm, they have the right and privilege to peace, joy and pride in self, faith and community.
This is beautiful in every way. Rather than feeling out of place in a time of such grief, it feels like an act of defiance...a refusal to be pulled down. I am not Jewish, but reading Daniel Deronda for the first time...it felt like such a celebration, of the beauty and the resilience of a people faced with centuries of bigotry and persecution. To see a character like Mirah triumph is so deeply satisfying.
The bodice is lovely and so are you. I'm so sorry that you and your people are once again forced to face such evil. I hope you know that not all of us are like that. Get some rest, and take care of yourself. Come back when you feel able, we will be here.
As someone who is frequently bedbound by pain and fatigue, thank you for speaking frankly about this! I have long felt I had to give up on my love of sewing since I can't sit at a machine or lean over a table without hurting myself, but I think I'm going to try and find a small project I can do laying down.
As someone trying to put together a few outfits for LARPs while fighting fibromyalgia, seeing you working from bed gives me hope that I can still work while healing. Thank you and never stop taking care of yourself. My heart and hopes are with you in this trying time, one marginalized costumer to another.
Great video as always. The new website looks amazing!!!!! the first "we are still here" - don't make me cry the last "we are still here" - I'm gonna need more tissues. Beautiful words
As someone with no chronic illness who still prefers to get as much done from a position best described as "lounging"... Work smarter, not harder. There are many valid reasons for doing things a more difficult way, like if you prefer the results, or if it's a learning opportunity, or even just to try it and see if it turns out differently... But "because it's harder" is not one of them! And if that's (hopefully) obvious, then it follows that "because it's easier" isn't something negative. I can only hope that the world catches up to this in my lifetime, that effort isn't a useful output in isolation.
"this is what you do when you have a chronic illness. you make things work, even if that doesn't look the way it would for other people." That resonated with me too. I know I'm several months late at replying though...but I deal with a chronic illness called Ehlers Danlos Syndrome myself. This week I've been having Covid plus my time of month is usually quite rough. Sometimes gotta do some things from bed. It's hard not to compare to others like others who are worse than me seem to do things I cannot but we just gotta do our best I guess and do what you said here.
Honestly victorians were really smart about reusing. I mean there are people nowadays that cant wear the same dress twice If they have taken a picture in It. And here they were wearing the same dress for years and even changing them for other purposes.
It's very simple for something that looks so complex-- just several rows of gathering stitches an inch apart. I've seen very complex honeycomb-style smocking on some, but this one gets the shape and texture with pretty straightforward methods!
Beautiful work. I can so relate to hand sewing in bed being faster than lugging out a machine when you feel up to machines. Nearly all of my sewing is hand sewing for that exact reason. I’ve been sickened by everything that has been happening, with the rise of antisemitism in this country, with the xenophobic rhetoric that I’m hearing all the time. My heart aches for my Jewish family and friends. I fear for my spouse on public transportation. I fear for my nieces and nephews in their schools. But you are absolutely right. They’re still here. And you’re still here. And that is wonderful.
I love everything about this project, and the gathering the front is so beautifully detailed! And you're so right, with any disability, you just find ways to make it work!
The was you figure out ways to do the lining on the front is so brilliant! Wonderful work on this day bodice. You are loved and we would be less without the Jewish people of the world. Let that light shine on and the joy continue.
You go girl! Tragedy, unfortunately, seems to be a fact of life but even in the midst of tragedy you can find joy in the smallest of things! Not only do you bring a voice to what most of us do not want to see or hear; a small voice who stands strong in her Heritage and her beliefs. Stay strong! Your beauty is not only on the inside but perfection on the outside.
I am so sorry that there are still people in this world who will target people for their immutable characteristics; specifically for you and any other Jewish person grieving right now. I stand with you and will do my best to support you.
I love the bodice, it's so pretty! But I love your message more! I'm German and our country also tends to focus on only the Shoa when it comes to Judaism. Ofc remembering the Shoa and fighting against something like this happening again is extremly important, esp with antisemitism getting worse also in Germany again. But I'd also love to see and hear modern Jews just living their lives. If there is any news about Judaism or Jews in Germany it's always bad news. It's very one sided (same applies for many other ethnic or religious minorities in Germany, but that's a different thing). That's one of the reasons I love your channel so much! I learn a lot about jewish history, but it is also an example of a jewish person living their life and doing what they love!
I love that bodice. And I can relate to the hand-sewing; it's something I can do when I need to be gentle with myself, but also want to feel a sense of accomplishment.
Since (because) you posted your first video in this project I have read Daniel Deronda. Great story and fascinating background. I'm on a George Elliot reading spree now. Previously I had only read Silas Marner.
You have every right to be proud of your heritage because it part of you. I'm sorry that your fibromyalgia has flared up. The 2nd bodice to your Daniel Deronda gown is almost as beautiful as the evening one, but that's probably robes a la transformation were so popular. One of my favourite is the green silk one circa 1872 by the incomparable Charles Frederick Worth in the Met. They even have pieces of it in blue, which corresponds to a portrait of Tsarevna Marie Feodorovna nee Dagmar of Denmark sister to Queen Alexandra. Your website looks amazing and I'll definitely check it out.
Peace and love to all the Jewish people I have met and all yet to come into my life. Thank you for sharing this beautiful dress and the inspiration behind it.
Congratulations on your new website! I enjoy watching your channel and all the lovely things you make. I also am appreciative of your beautiful efforts to educate people on the history of costume and the vile antisemitic portrayal of the Jewish people in dress and in art. To be a part of the mindless wearing of particular clothing, hats or accessories without knowing the context of its meaning hurt me personally. I have made an effort to now question what an historic item is and under what context was it created. I cannot unsee what you have brought to the light. God bless you and keep creating and teaching. Maybe someday our world will begin healing together!
V, your website looks awesome! My mother and aunt made Civil War era clothing for women and children in the 80's for several years as a business.. Loved seeing this video and your ball gown. Brought back many memories of them sewing and creating. I agree with your statement. Yes, you are still here despite eons of ill treatment. And yes, we do what we can do at that time!
Finally someone with the same sewing machine that i have. Mine just doesn't have the blue, it's all white. Different modle but still a Project Runway Brother sewing Machine
🦋 ! I really enjoyed seeing "The Demelza" dress you presented earlier. Why? Simply because it reminds me of the cinema "Braid" (Disney?Pixar?) Love your channel 💕
Such a pretty bodice, sewn with perseverance and determination. I was surprised to see your tea cup was the same pattern (blue bubble) Depression ware that I collect.
YAS. Be undaunted in your resilience, take the time you need to be well, and remember to reserve some chesed for yourself. Am Yisrael Chai. And beautiful work, by the by!
I totally enjoy this dress - it is so beautiful, as well as your commentary, ie 1/15. What I think is particularly cool (for lack of a better word) is the diverse ways in which this dress can be worn.
Sending hugs, thoughts, and prayers. I don't watch the news, so I didn't know that this horrific event happened on the 15th. I hope your fibromyalgia goes back down so that you can feel a bit of relief. I love this transformation bodice! Does the hooks tape close better than individual hooks and eyes? It looks a little open at one part is why I ask but I absolutely love it!
That is a lovely top. And I feel you on the fibro flares of stress, though mine is just having to move after over 4 years and struggling to find something I can afford on the work my body can do. I don't follow the news because I yell at it and get stressed, so for my mental health, my news gets filtered through twitter and tumblr. In a way, I'm glad I didn't hear, since the only person to die was the terrorist, but on the other hand, I needed to know when you mentioned it. I'm so sorry. I wish there was some way to stick all people who would do things like that on...I don't know, Greenland or something, and keep them all there so they couldn't hurt anyone. Maybe they could go build the moon colony or something. I don't know, just somewhere where they couldn't hurt anyone. They'd likely all take care of themselves since the various groups also don't like each other...but I won't actively wish for harm...just isolation. I hope you're able to find a measure of peace so your mind and body will be nice to you again.
Lovely video in every way. One thing i noticed was that you have your machine and work surfaces quite high. Does it help with back pain? I need to try to prevent back pain when sewing so that i can do it more and wondered if that might help.
I'm so sorry I don't know what happened on the 15th. I've stopped paying attention to the news as my mental health is bursting at the seams right now. Can't go to hospital cuz of world situation so hanging on with spit.☺️ It being in Texas it doesn't bode well for just about everybody. Sorry your illness is messing large with you, as well. Sorry Jews need to keep dealing with ignorant people.😔As always take care and have fun!!! 😷😎😷 P.S: Your little table looks lovely.✨
So i am writing a time travel novel involving a government agency (kinda, it's complicated) Firstly the government does actually consult a dress historian (they pay her) before sending the characters into the past the. As a writer i want to be realistic but i also want to indulge in descriptions of glorious costumes and have my characters go to the opera and maybe a ball or two. The challenge is to justify it in plot. However presumably the characters need to budget a little (given they need clothes from 200 BCE to 1990). So what petticoats could work under clothes in multiple decades, such as 1780s and 1880s or 1530s, 1660s, 1840s-1860s. And could you wear an 1840s skirt and an 1860s bodice and get away with it.

We are still here! Another beautiful dress bodice
This bodice came out beautifully.

That shade of light green with the black lace is so absolutely beautiful.
"The strength to find joy"
Yes.
Thank you.
Hey, Snappy Dragon, I would like to say, if I may, you are an entertaining and dazzling character!

I could not imagine how these gatherings would work, but it came out lovely. Yay for victorian practicality.
And I am glad you are here. 🙂

Thank you for taking care of our friend and treating her gently!
Your hair is so cute in that style, and you look so happy in the bodice!
Thank you! I'm probably going to work a tutorial on this style into a upcoming video . . .
I love everything about this project, and the gathering the front is so beautifully detailed! And you're so right, with any disability, you just find ways to make it work!

I watched this in the aftermath of the latest thing (TN schoolboard banning _Maus_), and what you said at the end is bringing me to tears.
The bodice came out gorgeous!
Also all the careful hugs! :(
I love the bodice, it's so pretty! But I love your message more! I'm German and our country also tends to focus on only the Shoa when it comes to Judaism. This is a gorgeous dress. Such a lovely peaceful colour and it suits you so well. Blessings and peace.
may their spirits sing with the harmony of lives well lived and loves well loved.
I love that bodice. And I can relate to the hand-sewing; it's something I can do when I need to be gentle with myself, but also want to feel a sense of accomplishment.
Perfect video for Remembrance Day. Thank you.
thank you it's been a rough couple weeks
What a lovely bodice. And by the way it is good that you are here!
Love the fabric, and the color choice. Elegance and purity.
All " other than" people have similar feelings and experiences.
Well said. You put into words what many feel and don't know how to say.
Beautiful work by a beautiful person. I love my Jewish friends and family, wishing you all much health and happiness!
thank you for that final bit at the end, during the reveal.
The bodice is beautiful! Thank you for being.
It looks amazing! The front with the gathering looks great!
Beautiful! I’m always inspired by your projects! I love how authentic you are and appreciate your willingness to share
The whole project turned out really great!
Beautiful work and thank you for showing how this works. You be who you need to be to live your best life. I am so proud of you!!!
Congrats on your master piece. It's beautiful. Blessings.!!
I love this silk and its colours so much

In the words of the Yiddish Resistance, "!לאמיר נישט לאזן זיך פירן ווי שאף צו דער שחיטה" and "!מיר וועלן זיי איבערלעבן"
Congratulations on finishing your site! I'm going to head over there right now! 😘
I LOVE this bodice! The lace on the sleeves is so elegant, and I love how this bodice extends the usability of the skirt.
Amazing and stunning!!!!!🥰♥️sending love!!!
You are such a beautiful soul. Thank you.

Such a pretty bodice, sewn with perseverance and determination. I was surprised to see your tea cup was the same pattern (blue bubble) Depression ware that I collect.

Очень красиво! спасибо Вам!

Very cool!
Its beautiful. Hope you are feeling better now. Its so frustrating feeling horrid on the inside when you look normal on the outside.
Snappy or would you prefer Ms. Dragon, I like courageous people! Just saying
She says you can call her V. :)
People are more interested in tragedy than in triumph - "if it bleeds, it leads". Don't take it personally.
I'm trying to write an Medieval RPG novel. With some realistic bits on it. Does Medieval era wear like leather?

I'm so sorry I don't know what happened on the 15th. I've stopped paying attention to the news as my mental health is bursting at the seams right now. Can't go to hospital cuz of world situation so hanging on with spit.☺️ It being in Texas it doesn't bode well for just about everybody. Sorry your illness is messing large with you, as well. Sorry Jews need to keep dealing with ignorant people.😔As always take care and have fun!!! 😷😎😷
P.S: Your little table looks lovely.✨

So i am writing a time travel novel involving a government agency (kinda, it's complicated)
Firstly the government does actually consult a dress historian (they pay her) before sending the characters into the past the.
I hope you get to feel a bit better soon, and congrats on still being here in this cruel world.
My best wishes to you and the jewish community
