It sounds cliche to say that tone is in the fingers, but when it comes to Knopfler, it's 99% true.

He didn't work in the shop... he was visiting the shop, in New York, and overheard one of the staff watching MTV and saying those iconic lines. He tells the tale on a Parkinson's interview...

I love the irony. Guy griping about rockstar making money. Behind him, is a rockstar, writing down his gripings, to make one of the most iconic rock songs ever. Which will no doubt be playing on those same tvs later that year, and he will probably be saying the same things about the song written with his lyrics.

Now, can I give suggestions three truly hard ones if I may:
Alex Lifeson from Rush (Can do Geddy too, his sound should be slightly easier)
Steven Wilson from Porcupine Tree and oh, so many other projects
      Adam Jones from Tool
These should be a right proper challenge for ye lads, eh?

Another video to prove that Knopfler's sound is the most underrated in the world. People start thinking it's easy. Then they start thinking it's possible to replicate it easily. Then they record a video to say they have succeeded. And then they fail so miserably that they realise the only easy thing about the whole process is that: to fail.

Michael Lloyd tone comes from the hand and learning his phrasing. Mark has such amazing dynamics. I have been studying his style for years. I can get his Les Paul tone on a Roland cube for brothers in arms and money for nothing I can get his assault and sound with the same set up it's all about adjusting tone knobs and feeling the song

Money For Nothing was from a rant Mark Knopfler heard a guy say in an American department store whilst watching MTV. Mark Knopfler is so good he even wrote a song called "Why Aye Man" which was about the formative idea of Auf Wiedersehen Pet. It even features Tim Healy, Jimmy Nail, and Kevin Whately randomly shouting "Why Aye Man" at the top of their voices

The source for Money for Nothing wasn't someone he met at work when he was young -- MTV was only founded in 1981. It was some "meathead", as he called him, in a shop some time in the 80s. The song was recorded on a Les Paul, not a Strat and the rhythm parts on Sultans (5:18) and all the songs on the first two albums were by his brother, David Knopfler.

In 2000, Knopfler appeared on Michael Parkinson's interview program and explained again where the lyrics originated. According to Knopfler, he was in New York and stopped by an appliance store. At the back of the store, they had a wall of TVs which were all tuned to MTV. Knopfler said there was a man working there dressed in a baseball cap, work boots, and a checkered shirt delivering boxes who was standing next to him watching. As they were standing there watching MTV, Knopfler remembers the man coming up with lines such as "what are those, Hawaiian noises?...that ain't workin'," etc. Knopfler asked for a pen to write some of these lines down and then eventually put those words to music.Mötley Crüe bassist Nikki Sixx, in misinterpreting the lyrics as coming directly from Dire Straits rather than a character based on a store employee, claimed that the song was about his band, and that the members of Dire Straits were in an electronics store where a row of TVs were all playing Mötley Crüe.[7]The songwriting credits are shared between Mark Knopfler and Sting.[8] Sting was visiting Montserrat during the recording of the song, and was invited to add some background vocals. Sting has stated that his only compositional contribution was the "I want my MTV" line, which followed the melody from his song "Don't Stand So Close to Me".

Still a bit expensive. I'd say ML3 Modern might be a bit more realistic, especially since they used it quite a bit for the recording of the Catalyst EP. Ghost Fret is awesome, don't get me wrong but I think they could get quite close for just that extra bit cheaper, maybe get an RD1 with that bit left over.

Also in the music video there is a cartoon builder sort of character watching a tv who was based on this person.

Very nice Knopfler-esque tones! He has always been one of my favorite guitarists of all time. He can speak volumes with his musical phrases.
If you want to try something very different, how about a 'Sound Like: Steve Howe' (of Yes). He is another of my all-time favorite guitarists.

You guys need to watch the little documentary about all his guitars, it's called guitar stories or something like that. 1960 Strat, 1958 Les Paul and then a guy that owned a shop in NYC made a guitar for him. He didn't want to switch guitars on stage so they put the best of both worlds of the Strat and Les Paul together to make the Pensa

    • @widowmaker5544
      @widowmaker5544 5 лет назад +4

that's gonna be a challenge, cos he has signature strats and has used a tele on on song, and also used gibson from time to time as he recorded most of Cliffs of Dover on an ES335 and occasionally used a les paul and in 2006 did Cliffs of Dover on an SG
his amps are black face fenders for his cleans and marshall super leads for the dirt and now he has a dumble head to go with them
pedals looks complicated but it can be broken down like this: two Catalinbread Belle Epoch pedals for a dry and lead delay, a Catalinbread Echo Rec to get an Echoplex sort of sound, an Ibanez T808 for some of the boost, a TC stereo chorus/flanger, an EHX Memory Man which is a staple sound for his delay, his own signature fuzz face by dunlop, a wah pedal which he hardly ever touches and the most essential pedal which is the Tube Driver which gets that violin like sound when paired with the fuzz face
if you can find a good rig that'll sound like him good luck, but it's not gonna be easy

Sorry Rabea but the story as it goes is that Mark was hanging around NYC back in the early 80's (on a tour cycle or just for pleasure, can't remember that part) and for some reason he was at a furniture shop where he heard a delivery worker in the store going on with those now famous lines used in the song. Yes he did carry around a notebook to write stuff down that struck him so that part is accurate. I've actually heard recite this story on a BBC show.

He went into a home appliance store, and there was a delivery guy at the back watching a wall of TV's tuned to MTV saying those things. He's told that story a hundred times.
The signature model was in Hotrod red, not fiesta. It had texas specials.
The quilt top WAS Pensa, not Schecter. He used Schecter strats too.
Brothers in Arms is on a Les Paul too.

The challenge with nailing the Mark Knopfler tone/style is that is style is so unique to him physiologically it's almost impossible to copy. It's more about getting a feel for his style than actually nailing it, but that's a good thing cause it causes you to aborb elements of his style but inadvertently develop your own style

I found that Mark Knopfler actually uses a Soldano for most things since the 90s... Someone once told me that he was the only one, who gets a clean sound out of one, but I've never played a Soldano, so I don't know how easy or not that is...

Ok, I'll play the hater for a bit.
Usually I enjoy this videos a lot, but not this time, I am sorry. I think it would require a bit more of homework rather than throwing some inaccurate facts that might lead people to repeat those mistakes.
Brothers in Arms (Amen), was recorded with a Marshall, not a Boggie (same goes for MFN). How dare you, yes dare, to sound like MK without a volume pedal??? Those violin swells??? A LP type guitar would cover MUCH more ground on the songs you picked, even for SOS. For instance, in BIA, he uses the neck pickup with some tone rolled back. Same for MFN but with the wah. Come on guys...
About the Money for Nothing story, there are some twists in there. MK wasn't working there, he was in a appliance store in NY, the MTV just launched, and the employer there was laughing at the videos and making all those comments, luckily, Mark was walking around fridges and washing machines taking his lines. "hey yoyo, thats the way you do it, you play the guitar on the mtv..."
    Fun, but way off, IMHO.
    Do another one! ;)
