  • Too large for the exhibit at MINExpo 2012, the Cat® 7495 Electric Rope Shovel was on display at our Tinaja Hills Visitor Center near Tucson, Arizona. Few people witnessed the process, but its assembly was captured in this video.

Imagine for a moment if this was an Ikea product; you'd get all the parts, one Allen wrench and a sea can full of books of pictograms explaining its assembly.

You don't realize how big this thing is until you see a 6060 parked beside it.

At 0:06, it shows the A-Frame lying on the ground. Anyone know what type of steel it'd be made from?

As an engineer, I'm guessing something like mild steel with some coating to prevent corrosion. That frame has to be strong, obviously, but it has to be ductile to withstand the continuous periodic loading

i suprised caterpillar is not making cranes

They would have to buy a crane manufacturer to do that. These rope shovels were made by Bucyrus; Cat bought the company.

Absolute piece of shit, this was the best Bucyrus could engineer and it was 50 year old technology when the 495 series came out. Most come with dated cable crowd system, though this one has the hydraulic crowd which is still garbage. Best thing CAT could do with this machine is get their name off it and pretend it doesn't exist. If you want a machine 10 times the machine of this look at the P&H, way and above a better machine with faster cycle time and way better availability.

      homie789 its not that serious

    • @MICKSHRED

homie789 it all comes down to preference, u got rack and pinion dipper on P&H which is nost likey hydraulic vs cable controlled crowd which is hydrualic. Take your pic.

It is unquestionable not a fine pice of craftsmanshop nor something which obviously stands otu among hydraulir or cable units. If ti was anothert time it would have fit in perfectly, This time is questiobanle. Thanks Yous!
