- What it sounds like inside a nuclear power plants cooling tower.
Matt Ballos and Kevin Peterson of WSDG were out in Elma, Washington this week to visit NWAA acoustic test labs. The lab is built in a nuclear power plant that was abandoned a few weeks before it received its first uranium.
In between the acoustic lab parts of the trip they were able to go around and explore the rest of the abandoned facility. This video is in one of the cooling towers. Even though it has an open top it does have a convex curve on the inside bottom of the tower. This shape makes for some awesome acoustics as you hear in the video.

What’s the purpose of these cooling towers? I’ve never been to one but it looks like they aren’t hooked up to anything they just are hollow w a gap at the bottom. Maybe I’m dumb but I’m dead serious I don’t know how these work
@@sky-hawk-3252 basically, in order for the nuclear plantto not implode because of extreme heat, water is uses to cool it down, meaning the nucleae reaction happens in a "bath" of water. This water is heated up quite a lot and need to be cooled down in order to go back through the system.
That's the purpose of these colling towers. Very bacically, the water is sent in from the top of the tower and a ventilator is placed at the bottom. So while the water falls, it transfers its energy (heat) to the air.
