- During the era of when Smash Ultimate actually received patches very regularly, it meant that so many characters were nerfed and buffed so much that they ended up on opposite sides of the tier list by the time patches were over. I'm gonna talk about 5 characters that used to suck or be low tier, but now are actually pretty dang good.

Hot take: Byleth was never a bad character, and I don't think he got buffed THAT much. I think it's more that he went from nobody playing to the top player playing him

agreed, i played byleth pre buffs and he was alright. def became a decent amount better with the buffs though
People definitely thought Byleth was very mid though. I think speed was overrated early in the meta. Don't get me wrong, speed is very good, but Skyjay and Kazuya have proved you don't need it to be a threat

Agreed. Byleth was always good the buffs made them slightly better but nothing changed on how they were played against, biggest thing was random Down smashes can break shields.
I think people refused to play Byleth because they were mad about having another FE character in Smash
Leo WAS the Byleth buff
Bayo should've been on this list. She was low tier at the start of ultimate, and now she's high tier at worst.
I also think the buffs really helped Corrin & Rosa out as well.
Up tilt buff alone made her a spot better. Cloud also got buffed crazy.
I feel Bayo probably was at least decent pre-buffs, but Bayo players didn't want to play a mid version of this chara in an early swing-heavy meta.

@@CarbonMalite bayo had some major issues killing and her multihits sometimes didn't work. Early meta characters were all good into Bayo: Inkling, Olimar, Snake, Squirtle, Wolf all beat bayo
Incineroar had the single biggest buff in the game with his up special getting like twice the vertical distance in the air. Incin on release was a joke, you just had to get him off stage at all and he was basically doomed. Go watch old Alpharad CPU videos if you wanna see how bad it used to be.
Diddy's is the biggest buff of the top tiers though, his up special had almost no vertical gain from where he started, so it was extremely hard for him to find an angle that'd get him back to ledge.

Imo the single biggest buff in Ult was making cloud snap ledge quicker from up b. Great video. Agree with all the picks 😀

edit: also Byleth was not buffed that much. UpB became a better spike and OoS option, but everything else was kinda meh since they were changes to ok moves that are still only ok. Byleth's tier list placement is 100% due to Leo.

Byleth didn’t get that many buffs but was considered low tier. Leo always thought they were high tier tho even before the buffs. Hence him beating meister with Byleth before the buffs.
Corrine should’ve replaced byleth on the list if we going by buffs
Nobody ever talks about Incineroar's up B buff near the start of Ultimate and that buff (along with a ton of other auto cancel and damage buffs) made Incineroar the genuine threat he is today. His Up B is probably 50% better than it was on launch and the only thing he lost was a consistency on his cheesy 0-death that he can still kinda do. Vanilla Incineroar was genuinely probably the worst character in the entire game in a tier all by himself.
I was like biggest buff to Byleth was that MKleo played him then right at the end Marss said that and I was like "aww yup"
the join requests for Clown Girl Honk Heaven are probably higher today than they have been in yearssss

Yes when nobody played him. Top players tend to make a tier list without putting time and knowledge into other characters. Now everyone hates G&W.

Remember when incineroar had little Mac tier recovery? I think people forget his recovery used to be DOODOO and without that buff he'd still be considered low tier

Genuinely surprised Mewtwo was here. He’s practically an invisible character despite how cool he is. Disadvantage is still an issue, but his advantage is so incredibly good.

1. Sheik was never bad, a LOT of her combos now still work in 1.0. I think the meta just needed to develop
2. Yeah Ken was bad
3. Mewtwo deserved spot
4. Diddy was good, his meta was just centralized around the infinite. Definitely got buffed though
5. Byleth was never bad. The up b buff was big, but that didn’t make the character.
That being said, comparing tier lists, yeah, all these characters moved up quite a bit.
I think Puff, Bayo, and Incineroar should’ve made the list. I think they represent examples of being buffed as well as players pushing their characters to the highest heights.
I've seen that Clown Girl Honk group around and never joined it. Nearly joined the darkside.

When Marss said Byleth was number one, I was like what is Marss smoking, Byleth was barely touched. That's just the MKLeo effect.
But Marss brought it back in the end. Leaving Byleth as number one and saying the MKLeo effect is a buff was clever and sort of true. I think Incineroar deserved to be on that list. He was bottom tier, now he's mid, and some people (who are wrong btw) even say he's high tier. Incineroar got buffed a TON of times, and a lot of big buffs too. Like his recovery being buffed was omega important.
Where's puff?! Litterally went from bottom 10 to high mid teir. Their whole game plan revolves around moves that were buffed!
Swear corrin used to be ranked as one of the worst chars in the game, like i saw bottom 1 early ultimate. Now look at her

And now she is consistently placing well in other big tournaments, not just by Neo, but also Shadic and Ly. Heck Leo even won a major with her. She should've been on this list instead of Byleth. Her buffs were waaaay more significant

I main Byleth and Corrin, both characters are great, ive always thought Corrin was underrated. But i also thonk Bayo shouldve been on this list, at the start of Ultimate she was awful, bottom 10 i reckon. And now shes a high tier character, shes fantastic now

@@airhead3409 2f faster startup on bair, (and 2f less landing lag and 2f faster auto cancel), jab 1-2 buff is bigger than it looks, massively buffed air dodge, huge pound buff that opened up her combo game, then bair buffed again.
