My great x3 grandmother was a convict from Scotland (arrest and tried in Ireland). She was transported to Hobart in 1842. She left behind a husband and daughter. She met my great x3 grandfather (also a transported convict) in Hobart and hence our family was born!!
Now that i have kids, i can't imagine a fate worse than loosing more than half of your kids before age 5, as happened throughout most of human history.
My wife and I have 6 convicts in our heritage, 3 of which were in the first fleet! … Shame on the ‘gentry’ back in England! Importantly, despite being sent halfway around the world for quite small crimes, they all eventually lived good lives.
I'm a direct descendant of two first fleeters, who met and married in the new colony... pretty special. Elizabeth Pulley was originally sentenced to hanging but then her sentence was changed n she was sent to Australia. She was a hard woman. Her n Anthony Rope were married m settled near Emu Plains in a place named after them, Ropes Crossing NSW
That's so interesting! I live on the outskirts of Windsor, so a stones throw from Ropes Crossing. I'm happy for you to have such great knowledge of your family history. 😊
@@australianhistorymysteries8025 Sentenced at the Old Bailey in 1807 for bigamy. While a convict worked as a clerk or school teacher I believe. Returned to England and married. Returned to Van Diemen's Land with his new family. I need to do more research. Had a lot of children
