Thank you for explaining who this is mostly for. I am a trail rider, as you said, 2nd 3rd and maybe 4th. So I am fine leaving this in. I just saw another video where he said to absolutely take them out, or your bike will blow up and send him the ECU for a tune.
Another great video, gonna take my reeds out of my '23 500 exc-f and put them in my 300xcw. Hoping for some gains on my 500, she's not as snappy as I want.
Coming late to the party. My 2023 FE 450 does not have intake reeds nor a 02 sensor. My pipe has a bolt in the bung. If KTM/Husqvarna made the bike like this I doubt there is any negative issue. In my state I was able to plate it. Will be making it a dual sport with Taco Moto parts. Mike is the best!
Looking to do this on my 250 excf did you use an intake tube or just pull reed cage? I also plan to add a JD tuner and alt ready have after market exhaust.
Yes. I just bought a 23 fe510 yesterday day and the parts guy was telling me any thing I add to the bike like exhaust and or performance mods will void my warranty.. he did say what ever I upgrade keep the oem part if anything happens.
Hey there love your videos! Question. I just purchased a 2019 KTM 250 excf with 6 hours. I noticed the evap solenoid was stuffed into the airbox. so its been desmogged. I don't have this intake reed either. I don't see an after market ecu. Im left wondering if they did it correctly or if anything needs to be done? I know theres the issue of startup not having that fuel from the charcoal canister, I do feel like it doesn't start as quickly as it could specially when it got hot on the trail. Anyways... I did an Oil change, it was pretty dirty... I put only 4 hours on it in trails, mostly 1st and 2nd gear stuff.. and when I came out onto a gravel road and was flying through the gears it bogged out bad in 4th gear. Being curious after that I did a motocross style launch and in 3rd it just shut off when I twist the throttle too fast. It was even making a rattle noise when I turned the bike back on that scared me. shut it off and let it sit for a bit, restarted it...noise was gone....road it home. Now just idling if I twist the throttle quick for a big rev it'll just die. Judging by the oil being that dirty I'm going to assume they didn't do other maintenance things, The bike also could have sat for an unknown amount of time. Im going to change the spark plug, fuel filters and put in a fresh air filter. I just wonder if its related to the desmogging in any way. I know its hard to say without seeing the bike. Any knowledge would be appreciated
2019 450 EXCF SIX DAYS - so leave in for low end grunt, and if removed - do exhaust and ECU. Or ok of just billet exhaust tip, no ECU? Slavens says messing with either without ECU redo leans things out too much?
wanting to know this as well. Have 2017 ktm 250 exc-f and really want to know if i am causing engine wear by only taking this out and not adding an ECU
Yes, that is correct. Air filter should be cleaned or replaced as it gets dirty. I check mine just about every off road ride. I have 3 filters and skins so I don't have to clean regularly. Read owner's manual on regular maintenance. There are other items to check regularly.
Same procedure for a '22 500 EXC-F? Does any ECU programming need to be done after this is done? Running stock ECU for the time being. Is this still a good HP increase for a trail rider?
@@dh-flies agreed-after researching the wisdom of the interwebs, I can conclude that the answer is yes. Or no. Bunch of people say they removed the reeds and there was a big improvement with the stock ECU. Others say it’s only there on the EXCs for sound management. And others say it changes the air intake so much that you need an ECU reprogram to match the fuel delivery. And with that, probably some changes on the exhaust side as well. Mine keeps popping out, so I’m just going to remove it and see how it goes. Will report back with an update. If I remember. 😉
Mike, how do I contact you in a better way? I'm curious if you may have leads on parts for a old 2011 Husqvarna TE250. A few engine parts have gone obsolete as you likely know. Thanks for any help if you have the time to do so. If not, thanks the same! Enjoy your videos. -Mike
Am I the only one that HATED this mod? I took out the reed box, and then eventually replaced the airbox boot with one out of the SX-F that is a simple tube. The bike BOGS badly off the bottom end... Then I took it from sea level riding to 10k - 13k altitude and it was absolutely garbage - ZERO bottom end.... I ended up cutting up a hard plastic jug/bottle to coil it up in the intake tract to try to reduce the diameter of the intake so that it would create some actual intake velocity. It helped, but I'm putting the Reed box back in.

Great video; great instructions; and, best of all short and to the point!

Thanks for the detailed instructions👍🏻
Gotta love the Taco
Thanks Mike
Do you add a snorkel or boot inside the opening once you remove the reeds?
lovely, those reeds like like they seal better than what they through into the 300's.

That bike is a completion only bike so lacks those things.
Man, did I luck out. Pulled the filter off my 21 500 xcfw and they were already halfway out after my first ride.
I have a 22 ktm 500 excf six days and Mine came of by itself and i was wondering what it was. I notice when i was changing the air filter.
Very good detailed video!
Mike, do the 500 ExC euro spec bikes have these? Living in NZ, all our bikes are Euro spec. With installing a GET, would you recommend removing them?
What other mods do you have to do if you want to remove the reeds? Do I need a new ecu??? Exhaust?
What air filter oil yall use?
Looking to do this on my 250 excf did you use an intake tube or just pull reed cage? I also plan to add a JD tuner and alt ready have after market exhaust.
Would you be fine doing this without a tuner or aftermarket ECU? Leaving everything else stock?
I'm wondering the same
Did we ever find an answer to this?
No, the bike will run too lean and perform worse. You'll need to richen the AFR
also want to know. Possibly removing the spark arrestors and blockages in the pipe would even things out
@@martyaffentranger1498 if performance doesnt seem worse in my opinion am i ok. Or is the lean running bike making it run to hot?
Nice video :) by pulling the reeds out will it expire the husqvarna factory warranty?
Yes. I just bought a 23 fe510 yesterday day and the parts guy was telling me any thing I add to the bike like exhaust and or performance mods will void my warranty.. he did say what ever I upgrade keep the oem part if anything happens.
Do you need to remap after you remove these?
What bike, what other mods

Like how do i get to the starting point where i see the intake reeds
Why not a heat gun
Why not just replace the intake boot with one from an unrestricted bike?
How do I get to the airbox? Do i takr the air filter off

good question, does it need ecu reprog ?
I have the same question. My reeds fell out. Wondering if I can remove them with the stock ECU?

@@s2pointoh Thanks... Still a couple of months before riding season for me. I'll be patient.. Lol
Mine just blew out one time when my bike backfired so… problem solved.
Found this rubber piece loose in my airbox - don't care to remove reeds - should I glue it back in or just run without it?

We don’t do anything pre 14 on the huskies. Apologies

I took mine out and removed the reeds…I put the cage back in. I was getting a bog too…
Mine just fell out at 30 hours
Self-removing, nice
I would love to see this reed fixed on the house windows of politicians who come up with regulations that require these things.
