  • If you have ever owned or experience BMW brake pad dust, you know the frustration I had. My wheels would be coated in brake dust after 1 drive after a wash. I could never enjoy a clean car out of the garage. It was time to finally take care of the issue once and for all. Picked up some Akebono Ceramic Pads and I couldn't be happier! Check out the video for the full install and initial review!

Installed these on my f80 about 2 years ago and my wheels look brand new still. Great choice 👍🏼

IMO one of the best pads for a street car are the Endless MX72PLUS : good cold bite, great fade resistance, not very agressive (for rotors wear) and low dust and noise !

Project MU or Dixcel are also good jdm pads for low dust and good bite

I highly recommend after you finish washing the car before you dry the wheels drive the around the block and get all the water out the rotor it will help with the rotor getting that rusted coating when it’s sitting after a drive. I normally go 10-12 mph brake and do it 2 more times, we also do it at the detail shop i work at.

I do the rusty rotor dance. I go back and forth on the driveway applying the brakes to rid the rust. I also use a rust preventive after the wash that keeps the flashing rusting down to a minimum.

I used these same pads on my e46 m3 and the initial cold bite was not the same as OEM, it was horrible, but once heated up it was better, I then switched to the brembo ceramic pads and it was perfect. My guess is maybe they changed something for the f series for the brakes to have better initial cold bite.

Akebono is top tier, 370z's come with Akebono Calipers, along with the McLaren P1 use Akebono Brakes.

Great video, super helpful guide when I need to change mine.
Off topic but any tips you can give to driving in sport+ with the 6MT with the rev matching and upshifts? It seems like no matter what I do, the car lurches slightly, could be how torquey the motor is.
What's your process on downshifts and upshifts?

Tuning does help a lot as the stock mapping is a bit more rough I've found. I've found you need to hang onto the clutch a bit longer in this car to drive it smoother. I doing the auto solutions ssk and UCP clutch pedal which will help smooth things out dramatically. Also deleting the CDV also is known to help as well.

Have you considered if you have not experienced any squeal because of the outside temp? Do you think you may experience some in the winter?

I’ve been running the same pads on my truck and haven’t experienced any noises what so ever the 2+ years with them on. I am willing to bet it will be the same experience with these on the f80.

I plan to do one. Most likely the macht schnell kit as I prefer that method of install. The titanium ones look nice but read some scary stories on them.
