Very good video, Austin. I know it's all too common even when you intentionally do things "all wrong" that the welds for a demo come out fine. That doesn't change your point, about things to avoid to head off porosity. Amazing to think of how finicky TIG is when the workpiece isn't almost sterile, and then your 7018 successfully welds over wet paint.

    *Awesome Video*
hahahahahahaha i watched many videos and said "lets rock" got porosity galore. then read forums. i did find an article that mentions Flux Core problems. you're the first video i see that explains that flux core goes bad etc. etc. Thats why i couldn't weld good. i can weld with a torch but never tried electrical. i'm a goldsmith / master jeweler 60 yrs exp. i did learn laser welding. Millermatic 135 sitting at my brothers garage for 7 yrs. he never used it (gas a tank too) flux core was there uncoiled, i recoiled it and started using it, not very pretty, then i heard noise and yep the wire broke and tangles inside the machine. downloaded owner's manual, printed and started reading. went to buy new wire unknowing i bought the gas flux and started welding with no gas, the horrors... saw a video explaining and turned gas on was sort of better till i noticed hose was not connected properly. fixed that and Welding Has Been Improved that i started fixing broken fence and gate around his property. for me that's my better way of learning, watching and learning from the mistakes. showed brother and he's now using his welding machine. he was always scared of being electrocuted. he build a motorcycle engine stand. some welds ain't pretty i told him to leave those as-is Those Are For Reminders and it helped as a teaching tool for his son that now is tinkering with the machine

I had trouble with porosity one time and had a hard time figuring out why it was happening. It turned out that the diaphragm in the regulator was rotting and little pieces of the rubber were blocking the outlet inside the regulator and it made it intermittent and that made it hard to figure out why. Great video

You might want to explain the relationship between stickout and porosity with gas shielded FCAW too... :)

too little stickout can cause linear wormholes with dual shield or flux core. You need more pre-heat of the wire before deposition............ would be interested to see this re-shot with an inch or two of stickout with more heat.

So how do you stop the flux core wire from going bad, or what is the fix for new flux core thats doing that? Cuz I've had that happen more often then old wire going bad...

      Maybe the wire was dirty

use it quickly lol, or store it in a very "dry place". in a much better sealed environment.

The clip pinched over the wire with a fabric pad to keep the dust off the wire was breaking down and slowly clogged the gas defuser once for me.

We weld metal 18-25 mm thick that is ultrasound tested. If they find a single speck on the UT, we have gouge out a wide area and do it again. Porosity is ALWAYS the welder's fault - there is no chance in hell you're talking yourself out of it.

With brake cleaner you can use it just don't use brake cleaner with chlorine in it you can get it with or without chlorine in it. It's the burning of the chlorine that is really bad for you .
