  • Ferling 35 is the slow one in F minor and features challenges of dynamics in the various registers of the oboe. Legato is key as the voicings are negotiated. Let me know what you like and find challenging about working on this one!

Thanks for another Ferling video! I think two key challenges worth focusing on in #35 are soft low notes and preventing breaths from sounding loudly. Low notes popping out, or just not having much direction to them, as well as big gasping exhales or inhales really break the immersion of this melody's character, resulting in the etude perceivably sounding challenging to play. While the etude has a dramatic, challenging character, we as musicians want to strive for what we do to appear effortless so as not to detract from whatever setting a given piece presents to our listener(s).
I would point out for those of whom use these videos for audition references: note Danny's difference in the speed of 16th notes between the 0:15 second mark and 2:18. The increase in speed is probably right on the border of what would be noticeable to a judge, and it may be wise to ensure those two passages exhibit no difference in speed further than what he demonstrates.

Great tips Devon! I actually didn’t notice how much I was driving through that lick, thanks for pointing it out :)

What a leap at 1:54! Desperate ranges indeed. Good work Dancho, I enjoyed listening to it!

This is off topic but could you provide an update on the marimba-oboe duet you and ivan trevino worked on? I know you just performed in on the 26th, and my friend and I really want to do the duet this spring for our solo and Ensemble
