Watching Ma play is like watching the counterpoint to Itzhak Perlman; music born from joy and expression instead of overcoming tragedy to find bliss. Both are powerful, amazing talents, but uplifting in very different ways.
I agree. I have learned that everyone can interpret music they way they believe it should be played and if listening to a recording of song for the first time you get the idea that "this song should always be played like this," then you are limiting yourself as a musician. For the most part music scores have written on them how it should be played but most of the time the true emotion behind the song can be hard, if not difficult, to convey on paper.
I love that my absolute favorite instruments are highlighted in this - French Horn, then Oboe, then, of course, the cello. I could do without the flute, though. :) It's always driven me crazy.

rostropovich plays like nothing is ever hard. and he know exactly where to put his hands without even looking. it's almost odd watching him, because it's so different how he plays, but it's definately amazing; no doubt at all.
@zeppelinboy777 no.no :) I was speak about Dvorak 1 st part with Daniel Barenboim and Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1970.I know usually people connected her with Elgar, because of her brilliant performance:) And about violin - my point was cello must be sounds as cello, not as violin as Yo Yo Ma did it there. But ofc this is just point of musical taste or personal choice:)
@TheBluefern Say something smart? Coming from the guy who said Du Pres version was the "best". Rostropovich owns this concerto. You were the one saying something musically dumb, smart guy.
@xbasket12x yes i know about my spelling but i do not care much about it. I was speaking about music and understanding music style.I play cello 40 years and know very well this concert, so next time when you are going to post comments, try to say something smart about performance and way how to play this concert an example, instead to bother me with abusive comments
@sarahbauman I absolutely understand what you're saying. I really dislike the flute...but that's probably because I know a girl who plays it very well, she goes to the conservatory in Maastricht, but she's such a bad person. You have no idea how mean professional musicians can be, especially classical ones.
Isnt bad, but tbh im not excitement , not at all, with his performance.Ofc with all respect for Yo Yo Ma ,but you guys should hear Jacqueline du Pré's version. For me her performance is shown exactly the way how to play this amazing concert. This is chello, not violin. If Dvorzak wanted to hear viloin here, for sure he wont put chello.
It doesn't matter who's the "best" cellist ever lived, I just enjoyed this video very much.
One of Yo-Yo Ma's finest work.. What a beautiful expressive performance.
i really like this video, he is amazing
god damn this is beautiful!
its beauty captured me. amazing.
I wish my cello sounded like that!!!
Oh yeah... And I also wish my name was Yo-yo Ma! Wow!!!
I love that my absolute favorite instruments are highlighted in this - French Horn, then Oboe, then, of course, the cello.
Veo esto y digo que no hay nada mas bello en este mundo que la música :D I lov u YO YO MA

Ahh...There's nobody who can play Dvořák quite like Mr. Ma- he's fantastic!
i heard he has trouble experimenting on this song.
i read it in an interview.
but when he plays it, he finds new ways to play it every time.
loved it, great passion
I love the horn solo!!
who's keep creeping around, disliking videos like this? i just can't uderstand it.

5:15 nice look...haha :D excellent performance
haha, when the horn comes in he's like: "ouch that's slightly out lol" @ 2:49
wow i love this song. even though i'm a violinist. I love it. Is there a violin version.
5:14 hi there.. nice to meet you my name is yo-yo-ma XD
Dvorak was a genius!
soooo coool:)
@TheBluefern I assume you're talking about Elgar. And it's a cello.
rostropovich plays like nothing is ever hard.

i don't know, maybe you should ask dvorak ''the way he want it to be play''

Yo-Yo Ma does what ever the fuck he wants cause he wins at life.
Buddy.. it's his interpretation... If you don't like it, don't watch.
8:34 yoyo has to wait on the orchestra. It looked extremely painful for him :P
@civmaster50
he meant strad.
the dude on the left flicks off yo yo at 18 seconds
I fell as though that the way Yo-Yo Ma played it was different than the way Dvorak wanted it. Other than that it is beautiful to the last note
@TheBluefern Say something smart? Coming from the guy who said Du Pres version was the "best". Rostropovich owns this concerto. You were the one saying something musically dumb, smart guy.
haha yeah. I knew his name even before I knew to whom that name belongs too.

Rostropovich is the best cellist ever, without a doubt.
좋구먼
man, ya gotta wonder how much that cello much cost.
If you don't believe me , just look at Jacqueline du Pré playing the same concerto , and you'll understand what I was meaning .
Why does everyone miss the D# in the first bar? GOD it bothers me so much
Yo Yo is going so fast i could have sworn he was in fast forward just slightly so
or at 17-18
This way of "playing" is called mannerism (like exaggerated tempi & colors)
@MrDadamax A little, ya think? lol...
Where was this concert?
I am 99.9% sure this was in Shanghai with the Shanghai SO, 2010. I was lucky enough to be there. :)
That's the second concerto not the first
There is no second Dvorak Cello Concerto
@sarahbauman

I am not anti-asians , I am anti Yo-Yo Ma .
@magnetimidget you don't have to be blasphimious

Thats right...he actually lusts after the Asian 'look'....
It's just his ear and musical 'soul' that is racist....;-)
hoooo. leeee. shit.
It's question to interpretation... At least he doesn't do like Piagorvsky and start up bow.... :P
@acRi5ma Likely Justin Bieber fans... they're of apparently the identical maturity level.
M
I am no racist , I love the playing of Mrs. Hyun Jung Lim or Mrs. Wang , but I dislike very much Mrs. Ma .
his fingers were so cool. he is amazing. my role model. i sound so bad compared to him:(
why is it always racism when white criticize asian? and this case he meant that yoyoma does not deserve that cello.
the cello of jacqueline du pré ..... and the monkey is playing it ..... sad ...
