  • Arguably the most successful of Japanese firearm wonk Kijirō Nambu’s pistols, the Type 14 saw lots of use in World War II and is seriously collectible today. Nambu is associated with at least a half-dozen different machine guns, the Arisaka rifle series, a submachine gun and four pistols that reached service.
Nambu, a general in the Imperial Army who died just a year shy of becoming at octogenarian in 1924, is often described as the “John Browning of Japan” due to his prolific gun designs. The Type 14, itself a simplified update to Nambu’s own Type A pistol, was designed in the general’s last days and was first produced by the Chigusa Arsenal for service with the Imperial Army in 1926.

I appreciate this video of the Nambu Type 14. I have only one, a small trigger-guard Type 14, one of the pre-war Models. The history of the Type 14 is fascinating, to say the least. I have observed many Type 14's starring in war movies, in the hands of a Japanese Officer, about to lead his men on a suicide charge against our US Marines, on some small Pacific Island. The bring-back Type 14, in good condition, is preferable. If it has the "original" clam-style holster with the original shoulder strap the value of the gun is significantly advanced. I purchased mine out of an estate sale for 250-dollars around 2010. It was a bring back, no import markings present, in good operating condition, and about 70-percent of the original blue present. All I got was the gun at purchase time, later I added a repo-clam holster and strap to enhance the appearance. I may purchase an original, but most of the ones I have observed are very rough looking, costing arm & leg. Thanks for this video!

I remember back in the seventies you could pick up those for nearly nothing at surplus stores.
I was considering buying one at “Old Sarge Surplus Store” when the guy behind the counter talked me out of it. He said that they weren’t worth a crap so I bought a Colt 45 for a few dollars more.

When shooting use Buffalo Arms ammo or reload. Do not use PCI it will break your extractor and not cycle because it is very under powered.

Chris Eger tried PCI because it was cheap had to bend my extractor back and it didn’t cycle once.
