I tried this yesterday and it totally worked!! I hadn't used purple shampoo on my hair in a while so it was quite brassy/golden. I even used it with a curl cream cleanser and not a shampoo. I left the curl cleanser with the tea in my hair for about an hour and then rinsed and put conditioner with the tea in. I really thought because I didn't use regular shampoo it wouldn't work but it did and really well for the first time. I feel like purple shampoos I've bought and left on for while didn't even work as well as this did. Super impressed and thank you so much for sharing Kirsten!!!
I've been using this for a couple of weeks now and it has been working really well!!! Today I've tried something different with it: I made a hair rinse with it, but haven't rinsed out! Just dipped my hair in the butterfly pea 'tea' a couple of times, squished out the excess water, and let my hair dry as usual. Works even better!!! It's such a nice, ashy blonde now! but still warm as well. Ashy, but warm. Thanks so much for this video!

So glad to find this vid! I have developed an allergy to hair dye and purple toning shampoos but like my blonde hair! I may be able to keep my hair toned after all. Thank you!
I love this idea!! And I have been doing this now! Thank you so much! Anything that's the organic/natural version I'm all for!! Right now I just put the conditioner I made with the butterfly pea flowers on my dry hair, and just letting it sit with a plastic cap on. Hoping it will give faster results! Since its more concentrated. Thanks love for the idea!
I have these flowers growing in the garden and it is so pretty but oh my goodness the pigment is so strong. I’m looking forward to using it for my brassy tones
Just had an idea of mixing the blue tea powder in with leave in conditioner - similar to the tea rinse - might be the easiest and then it's staying in your hair and hopefully not turning you into a smurf lol. But I might try it :) I'd suspect it would have to be really light to not overstrain unlike the shampoo/conditioner
Oh my gosh, this is AMAZING. I’m trying to go zero/low waste, and part of that means getting rid of my purple shampoos and conditioners for my blonde hair. I might use this as a mask or something! If it keeps me from paying for toner and highlights in the salon, I’m for it!
Thank you for this amazing video. Super inspiring :-) I have used the blue pea flower twice now and had some nice results. The first time I mixed with shampoo and left on for 30 mins and saw a sliiight difference. The second time I mixed with a conditioning mask and left on for an hour and it worked better. Next time I think I will try mixing it with water alone and no conditioner..... I am determined! Thanks again Kirsten xxxx
@@Ladycon8 I think I prefer the result with mixing it with conditioner and using this as a mask and also adding some of the dye to my shampoo bottle :-) I actually made the dye using the powder in a french press/cafatiere so there were no bits in it :-)

Thank you for this info. I actually have the blue pea plant in my backyard. I'm excited to try this out. Quick question though, did you use the same mixture every day?
I don’t usually shampoo every single shower, more like every other shower or so :) I haven’t been using it lately because I don’t have highlights currently but once quarantine is over I plan on getting my haaaair done girrrl and better believe I’ll be using this lots :)
Awesome! :O I think I'll buy the tea because it's way cheaper but I think it should do the same thing. I hear it has hair strengthening benefits aswell so that's a plus. I'll buy it and see how it goes. Thanks for the video, given me something to think about.
Ahh I hope you love it as much a I do! And heck yes, if the tea is cheaper, by all means, get that! I will say, just make sure you check the weight of your tea package comparatively to the loose flowers..sometimes tea is sooo little of the actual herb that it may not be as big of a bang for your buck :) Keep me updated on your results. I wanna hear how it goes!
Love the tutorial. Out of curiosity, any idea what the results would be on *naturally* blonde & sometimes brassy hair? My hair went through a recent drastic color & texture shift recently due to major hormone change after breast cancer (don't worry, I'm absolutely *FINE* now, so no need at all for any "sorries", I'm all good 😊). Went from being natural red-head ranging anywhere between auburn to copper to strawberry depending on the sun, to being mostly blonde ranging anywhere from strawberry to honey to some streaks of near-platinum. I actually *like* my somewhat brassy strawberry underlayer & don't necessarily want to loose it. Have been looking into the hair growth/strengthening properties & butterfly pea flower, though, and am in love with the restorative nature of it for the follicles & shaft. Considering adding just a bit of it to a hair masque for post-clarifying. If I'm only doing the deep conditioning hair masque once a month, do you think it will still affect the color?
No I think you should be good! If you're not doing it super frequently, I think your color shouldn't change much at all - even if at first it does, it will fade back since you wouldn't be continuously using it :)
You're the best, Marion :) Thanks for the love. I have been traveling for several months and haven't been as on top of making it..but when I was using it every other wash or so, it was incredible how much it worked! Hope this helps and hope you're having luck with it 🌺 xoxox kirsten
@@KirstenNaturally I've been using it ever since and I LOVE IT 🥰 It is a little drying though if you already have dry hair but nothing a little conditioner/oil can't fix! 🌺

I'm going to try this!!! I have been searching for a natural toner for years!! I cannot wait!! If this works for me, I will never be able to thank you enough!! Fingers crossed!! Your hair looked so good after!!!
Ahh let me know how it goes! Lately I've been getting really good results from the purple version I mentioned too, so try both and see what you think! All you need is a teeny bit of apple cider vinegar, I'm amazed at how small it takes to turn it purple! You're the best, what a sweet comment :)
I tried it tonight!! I was so excited. I’m not sure if I can tell the difference. I may be able to tell a little bit, not 100% positive. My hair still has brassiness. My shampoo and conditioner bottle is a beautiful purple/blue color now. So cool! Who needs food coloring when nature has such beautiful colors to work with!! My worry is that the color doesn’t stay with my hair, but just washes out when I rinse my hair. I will try it some more and try the acv too. I just want my hair to soak it up and not get rinsed out!
Yea it took me a few washes to REALLY notice a difference...I don't wash my hair every single day, so it took me about a week and a half to be like "Zaaaaaamn okay this is working!" I totally hear you with wanting it to soak in, maybe make an even heavier concentration of butterfly pea flower to water by steeping more BPF with less water and then add that in your conditioner and let that sit in your hair for 15-30 min before your shower? I haven't tried that yet so I can't say for sure but I'd imagine that would work more intensely 😍
In the video I talk about how you can make it blue or purple depending on if you use a teeny bit of apple cider vinegar or not. Blue is without ACV, purple is with AVC - I show both so you can see which one you'd rather do based on what you're trying to achieve with your hair :)
Thank you so much for this video!!! I just ordered some dried butterfly pea flowers online and can't wait to try them 😃 Have you had any experience with adding more highlights after you started doing this? I'm wondering if it may affect the bleaching process or dye in the same way as other natural "miscolourings" like too much iron in the water does. I know hairdressers sometimes don't want to dye or bleach hair washed in water from your own well in the countryside for example because it makes the result unpredictable if the hair is already stained. I have a quite boring medium blond hair colour so I like to ad highlights, but othereise I only use natural organic products. My hair is turning quite yellow and brassy now and I'm so excited to try your natural way to tone it down. I think I'll try it anyway hahaha but just wondering if you or anyone else tried bleaching the roots after you started using this tea. Thanks again for sharing ❤️

okay you must be a some sort of scientist to come up with this and also be able to explain it! first video I seen with no food dye used. My hair is bleached and I have tried food dye-based diy stuff and it didn't work. I use a regular purple shampoo now but it really dries my skin and has a chemical feel to it - wish I had seen this video before buying it. It deserves more likes! waaaay more likes! people need to hear this
Haha thanks for the compliments, you're awesome! You know, I actually thought of this when I was brewing purple kombucha with this butterfly pea flower. I like how its more subtle than chemical purple shampoos, but still definitely changes your hair color. Its A LOT less drying as well. If there's anyone you know that could benefit from this video, you're of course welcome to share it with anyone! Thanks again for the love 💕🍍
Ahh no but I have been reading about this method recently and really want to try that out! I watch a lot of @sweetsimplevegan and she talks a lot about how that has taken her hair to a whole new level! Thanks for the love, so glad this video was helpful xoxoxoxo

Would the powder form of this tea be more effective? I'm on amazon right now and don't know if I should get the dried flowers or the powder version lol
I've never tried it in powder..my biggest concern would be that you can't really steep and strain it that well if its too fine of a powder? I'd go with the dried flowers if I were you, since we already know they will work like a charm 😊
So, I am trying to embrace my age, my hair is turning gray and I have stopped coloring it. My hair is a lot of different colors right now. I noticed it is starting to get that brassy look. Will this shampoo work on gray/white/dark blonde hair as well?
Peggy Werth you go! that’s awesome you’re embracing your age, we all should. and it may work! i don’t know for certain but i’d say it’s worth a try :) and then if it doesn’t end up working you can always use the butterfly pea flowers in tea and different drinks 🤩🦋
Trying this tomorrow. Had the flowers but never tried them except to make color changing drinks. Be sure to try that, too. Make a cup of tea that is blue and turns purple when you add lemon. I'm planning to try making lemonade, but not adding the lemon till serving time so it stays blue. Serve the lemon juice separately so people can stir in and watch their drinks change color. Can be used in alcoholic drinks too I think, to make color changing drinks. Have not tried anything but the tea. Taste is mild, kind of like green tea. Will see what it does to my hair now!
girrrrl same!! I discovered this from having a drink at my favorite Thai restaurant in Portland and that inspired me to do this in my hair! works like a charm ;) 💜
I just wash as I normally would, so I'd say the shampoo stays in for less than 1 minute and then with conditioner I usually will cover my whole head and then let that sit while I finish my shower, then I wash it out last so that my hair gets the most conditioning possible :) Update me on how it works for you! 💕
Belladonna Amane it’s a shampoo and conditioner so you just wash it out. Just like any toner, you keep applying as needed to maintain the color you want.
as with any toner, you’ll need to keep up the applications to keep the shades you want nice and fresh :) it usually lasted about 2 weeks for me before it would start to fade out a bit, but was still noticeable. The key is to start using it a lot to see results and then upkeep as needed 💜
I have a video on a hair mask that you could totally combine this with! That would actually be awesome, plz let me know how it goes! 👀bit.ly/coconuthairmask
Tamara Glennon hmm i don’t think so 🤔 bc it’s not packed with nearly as much blue pigment, so you’d have to use way more to get an effect, if any. on the plus side the butterfly pea flowers are really affordable as well! ☺️🦋
It depends on how light or dark your brow hair is. My friend who has light brown hair used it while she stayed with me for a week and all of the natural highlights throughout her hair got even lighter, almost blonde compared to the rest of her brown hair. However, it won't really work if your hair is dark brown and doesn't have any lighter strands/highlights.
Lolol I don't know the Pinterest basil hack, but this one sure as hell worked for me! Haha thanks for watching and taking the time out of your day to comment :) much love to you, kirsten

Loved this! I never thought I'd find a natural alternative to purple shampoo. I know you did this a while ago, but have you tried doing it with Blue butterfly plea powder? I reckon it might work even better, what do you think?
Yay I'm so glad you enjoyed! I've never tried it, simply because I still have the dried flower in my kitchen but it could work really well! Let me know how it goes for you if you try it :)
@@KirstenNaturally Sure will! I just ordered it ;)
@@lidiajuarezalonso4819 and did it worked better with the powder?
@@Bfly. it absolutely did! And it's easier to blend into the shampoo, too.
@@lidiajuarezalonso4819
I have grey hairs. Will the powder color my greys ?
Hi Kirsten, do you think this would work just as well for grey hair? Thanks!
I had to subscribe. You are a genius ❤🎉
This is brilliant!
YOU are brilliant, Mariana! Hope you have great luck using my recipe for this! Thanks for watching :) If you like other "How To" videos like this one, I'll link a playlist of mine that I think you'll love :) bit.ly/kirstenhowtoplaylist
okay you must be a some sort of scientist to come up with this and also be able to explain it!
first video I seen with no food dye used.
Do you follow any of the Curly Girl methods for the natural waves in your hair? This vid is soooo useful to thanks xx
Ahh no but I have been reading about this method recently and really want to try that out! I watch a lot of @sweetsimplevegan and she talks a lot about how that has taken her hair to a whole new level!
Thanks for the love, so glad this video was helpful xoxoxoxo
@@KirstenNaturally I think I have similar wavy hair to you and it's good for "light waves" too :) I love those thumbnails where they go from normal hair to ringlets... a girl can dream! xxx
Oh alright thanks! one more question, do you know if i could just mix this in with my shampoo bottle or will it get moldy?
Throw it on in there! I've got it in my shampoo bottle as we speak 👌🏼 It hasn't molded on me and I've had it in there since I posted this video.
Have y'all tried boiling it down until it reduces it's water?
So, I am trying to embrace my age, my hair is turning gray and I have stopped coloring it. My hair is a lot of different colors right now. I noticed it is starting to get that brassy look. Will this shampoo work on gray/white/dark blonde hair as well?
Peggy Werth you go! that’s awesome you’re embracing your age, we all should. and it may work! i don’t know for certain but i’d say it’s worth a try :) and then if it doesn’t end up working you can always use the butterfly pea flowers in tea and different drinks 🤩🦋
@@KirstenNaturally I plan on trying it this weekend. I'll let you know if I have to wear a hat to work on Monday! LOL
Love your approach
Sooo awesome girl thanks for doing this video
Yayy I'm so glad I could help! Thanks for the comment :)
I discovered this from having a drink at my favorite Thai restaurant in Portland and that inspired me to do this in my hair! works like a charm ;) 💜
how long did you leave the shampoo and conditioner on your hair? :)
I just wash as I normally would, so I'd say the shampoo stays in for less than 1 minute and then with conditioner I usually will cover my whole head and then let that sit while I finish my shower, then I wash it out last so that my hair gets the most conditioning possible :) Update me on how it works for you! 💕
How long does this stay on the hair?
Belladonna Amane it’s a shampoo and conditioner so you just wash it out. Just like any toner, you keep applying as needed to maintain the color you want.
@@KirstenNaturally thankyou :))
How long does the color last?
Noor Faiqah I’ll try it and tell u
as with any toner, you’ll need to keep up the applications to keep the shades you want nice and fresh :) it usually lasted about 2 weeks for me before it would start to fade out a bit, but was still noticeable. The key is to start using it a lot to see results and then upkeep as needed 💜
@@user-fy6jz9jq8u so ?? How??
Do you think this will work as a mask with coconut oil? I’m going to try 😊
I have a video on a hair mask that you could totally combine this with! That would actually be awesome, plz let me know how it goes! 👀bit.ly/coconuthairmask
Genius!!
Can i buy butterfly pea flowers at trader joes?
no but here’s the link to the ones I use that you can get delivered super quick :) amzn.to/2PMMgYq
Thank u 😭😭this is going to help!!
You're so welcome! Glad I could help ya out my friend!
I wonder how Blue Tansy oil would work?
Tamara Glennon hmm i don’t think so 🤔 bc it’s not packed with nearly as much blue pigment, so you’d have to use way more to get an effect, if any. on the plus side the butterfly pea flowers are really affordable as well! ☺️🦋
What if you used this toner on brown hair?
It depends on how light or dark your brow hair is. My friend who has light brown hair used it while she stayed with me for a week and all of the natural highlights throughout her hair got even lighter, almost blonde compared to the rest of her brown hair. However, it won't really work if your hair is dark brown and doesn't have any lighter strands/highlights.
Genius!
Wow! You’re adorable and so sweet❤️
Daaaaaahhh you made my day 🤗 Thanks for the love!
How do you turn it into blue shampoo
watch the video and find out 😘😘
It's so embarassing to walk with orange hair lol anyways I read something about this but I cant find a video until now thanks

Great idea cause that Pinterest basil hack doesn’t work
Lolol I don't know the Pinterest basil hack, but this one sure as hell worked for me! Haha thanks for watching and taking the time out of your day to comment :)
much love to you,
kirsten
What Did u add to make it purple? I couldn’t understand.... did u mean apple cider vinegar?
taistorezan yea apple cider vinegar! Or lemon juice will work too :) you just need an acid to change the color ❤️
Thank you 😊 can’t wait to try
I'm here for the same reason. Apparently the Instagram video uses a lesser known variety of basil > purple basil.
Metal??
You are awesome thank you
You are so welcome, my friend. YOU are awesome 💕

Awesome video THANK YOU SO SO MUCH!!!
I just ordered the flowers, I am so in need I just sat in the sun with spraying a bit of 3% peroxide and chamomille into my hair and now it is way too brassy 🙈 greetings from Germany ❤️ I could think about red cabbage and blueberries and black goji berries as well for this :)
you’re so welcome! glad i could help you 🤗😘
