Speaking for myself only: The main reason I like your channel is because it is about being on the field, Photography and Editing tips.
Yes, gear is important but how many other channels for this?
It's your Channel, keep it to your image.

I totally agree. Everybody has gear review channels, but few do a very good job on how to see, compose and edit a photograph. I get a lot out of just watching the creative process. Glad to see you getting back to that.

your editing is not that cool ... specially colors ... i can't judge composition ... because it's a personal choice ... me personally !! i hate instagram filters and colorisation

Andres Garcia I couldn't agree more. I'm a student right now living away from home and for security reasons I leave my beloved ten year old DSLR back at home where it's safe from getting stolen.
Thomas watching your videos is like therapy for me. It reminds me why I love photography so much. Gear is great and all but it's the experiences you have while taking the shot that truly make photography such a wonderful hobby. You're channel brings out the experience of photography that gear reviews simply can't do.
I think your content is very very original and helps me when I'm homesick or just miss my camera. Not a lot of people make videos like you.
Keep doing what you do Thomas.

Yup - Canada is amazing! But don't fall for the myth that once you've been to the Rockies you've seen Canada. There's tons more to see and, being on Canada's Atlantic coast I'd suggest checking out this part of the country as well. I offered to Thomas and I'll offer to you as well Nigel - if you come to Canada's Maritimes, look me up. First beer is on me :) Cheers.

I started following your channel few years back when you only had few K subs. What makes your channel standing-out is the photography journey you shared with us. Every hike you took, every photo you setup for shooting. And what makes your channel unique, is your personality. You are so honest, humble and down-to-the-earth. Please keeping it up. You are unique and should be yourself. Those gear channel may have hundreds of thousands views but I hardly remember the person that hosts channels. I will remember you, even tomorrow you are not doing photography, I will still follow you because you are the person I look up to.

Hi, Heaton. As a silent audience, this is the first time I comment your video. You and Nick Page are two photographers I truly love on RUclips. In this video, I can feel the depression before you goto Canada. Nobody can distinguish you from your gear but your works, your style and your modes. There are so many so-called photographers are stuck on the choice of various types of camera. As you said, changing to new camera can boost the self-esteem momentarily, but can not last longer. A good photographer is forged in shooting other than consuming. You are on the right way now, Heaton. I sincerely hope that you can keep going and forgot the new gears.

One of the main things I love about your channel Thomas is that you aren't afraid to open up and tell us your thoughts and reasoning behind something - good or bad. Don't let other people's comments affect you in any way, they are just words, most probably from people you will never meet. I started following your channel many years ago due to your outstanding photography and this hasn't changed. You have proven time and again its not the gear you use but the way you use it. Keep being you.

You're the most inspiring stills shooter I subscribe to. I come here for genuine, authentic information and experience without the hours of b-roll and the endless paid plugs. I am a huge fan of your work. On the plus side, I've only been watching for a year, so there's plenty for me to catch up on.
I just watched the video "How to Use a Wide Angle Lens" and my wife was so confused when a threw my camera in a backpack and told her I'd be back in an hour. No one else's video has had me so excited to get out and shoot.
Thanks for all the work you do!

Tom, I don't know how to say it well, and I know it doesn't mean much, but please don't listen to those horrible emails and comments. Everyone on the internet acts like such a monster. Your videos inspire me to improve my landscape photography every day (despite terrible weather here, as well.) You helped me launch my photography business and get through a difficult time in my life where I didn't believe in myself. It's strange how RUclips is such a one-sided viewer-creator relationship but you're doing fantastic (your rambles are entertaining) and please don't stop making content!

Hi Thomas, just wanted you to know there was something missing in my life where I didn't have anything to drive me to enjoying life. I stumbled on your channel one evening, always liked photography but never did much more than family holiday shots, and I got to be honest your channel completely changed my life, it inspired me so much the next day I went out and bought my first full frame camera and a wide angle lens. Photography gets me outside walking enjoying the beautiful countryside we live in. Life is awesome now I can't explain to you how much it's changed my life. This is all because of you vlogging your experiences. Thanks so much for making a difference. 👍🏻

Hi Thomas. I have been following your channel for about a year and love it. I particularly admire your honesty. I think it is very courageous that you disclosed that you had some recent personal issues relating to self esteem and confidence. It may help others who are going through similar difficulties by making them feel they are not alone. You’re video was a lovely example of how to use reflection to resolve a problem. Please don’t pay attention to haters it’s a waste of time and energy. You’re passion for photography is inspiring and it spurs me on to engage in my own photography. Keep up the great work and enjoy your trip to South America. Best of luck Paul.

Shame there's no love button here. Wonderful episode Tom! I had the same mind frame lately. It's hard to not get sucked into that mentality, and to not let the negativity of social media get you down. I had the same idea of buying new gear to get me out of a rut, and I just recently scrapped it and put all that money into savings for a huge trip, and I'm way more excited about that. Plus it'll be a lot of extra great content for my channel. Thanks for putting videos like this out there and sharing your thoughts, it helps a lot of people.

I'm following your channel for roughly one year and really enjoyed the way that you are focusing on the "non technical" side of photography, the process of finding the right composition, the suffering of getting up early, hiking miles and miles, sometimes under bad conditions and also the possibility of not getting a good picture in the end of the day.

I have to say: Out of all the channels i'm subbed to on youtube, your channel is the one i'm most happy about when i see an upload. It's not about the new feature of whatever camera is hot at the moment, it's not about on special location. It's about the inspiration you give to me, i haven't shot in a while as well because of school stress and such, but you are the inspiration for me to look at my old photoes, re-editing them and making me want to shoot again. You are once again, the best channel out there, you are not gear related, you are an inspiration for us (me) to do what we love.

I recently discovered your channel. Landscape photography is my love as well and has been for many years. My husband and I have had great experiences being out and enjoying nature together although we are more limited now in our abilities and stamina. I hope you always focus on the joy of the process. There are plenty of other gear channels. It's so refreshing to have you comment that you could get those same photos with any of the modern cameras. I love new gear as much as anyone, but there is always something newer coming out and it will never leave you fulfilled. I love how you said you paid for a trip with the money you saved by not buying a new camera. You are very wise. Some people feel self worth by their possessions. It's not a good way to live. Thank you for sharing your thoughts here. I can relate.

The oversaturation of gear videos on RUclips is exactly what drew me to your channel and a small handful of others. You're a constant inspiration to me and my practice in photography, keep at it and make sure you're looking after yourself, mate!

Well said Thomas, I too was in the photographic doldrums & very nearly bought a new camera this weekend. I changed my mind, booked a weekend away for the festival of fools Belfast & a holiday in the Lakes instead. Now I'm really looking forward to getting back into photography! 😀

I find that when I am in the doldrums and looking at camera specs, I'll just pick up one of my cameras plus just one prime lens, go out and just take photos of some subjects that I have not done yet. It doesn't matter what it is, just try out something new. Amazing how quickly I get back into the groove of enjoying taking the photos and appreciating that my current camera gear is already what I need.

Thomas, I like your in tent/campervan videos. Anyone can produce 'gear' channels but, only you can produce your channel. Keep up the good work and take no notice of the trolls.

Thomas, your channel, and in particular your message has always been about the practice of photography and developing skills of sight, creativity, and faithfulness to the thing you enjoy most, photography. You don't need a new camera, a better camera, nor even a mirrorless camera. That which I have appreciated about you and your channel is the message of being true to self, relationships, the gifts within and photography. You still have one of the best cameras in the marketplace. Don't change. All the best.

Refreshingly honest and something I relate to closely. I've been diagnosed with depression/anxiety for over 3 years and it's quite common to try to find some happiness or a fix by filling your life with new 'things', and it's not the answer. Whilst I still struggle with the temporary satisfaction of 'retail therapy', I am trying to put more emphasis on the experiences. As a result, I'm now reducing my collection of 'stuff' and putting the rest into storage to travel Australia for a year. Kind of a 'perspective trip'. And hopefully a few photos result.
Keep up the good and honest work.

Don't buy a new camera. You are good at what you do, new gear won't change that. Let the gear heads be gear heads, you aren't one of them.

...replying to myself, just to prove that forming two whole sentences is a challenge. My point was, buy it, don't buy it, do what you want. Whatever you do it has little to do with this channel. This channel won't be any different if you shoot it with the body you have or if it's with a Logitech c930 or a Nikon D870 or Canon D2. That is what I was trying to get at. We'll all be here watching you trudge along in snow to your hip, with horisontal sleet and hail, all safely sat at our desks. And thats the way it is in here. :)

Depending on the reason. Thomas was in a sad place, new camera will not fix it.
On the other hand ignoring smaller and lighter full frame camera system would make hiking easier. And yes, I am talking about new upcoming "pro" body that might eventually come up in a year time.

Hey Thomas! I love what you said in this video! Don't give in to what's popular...just keep doing what you've been doing. I've watched every single video you've put out, and I love your content! Do what makes you happy, not what makes others happy. One of the things I love about your channel and videos is your passion and love for the outdoors, adventure, and photography. And I love that you are re-inspired! The videos from the trip to Canada were awesome! Makes me want to drive up there and shoot some of those locations since I love just south of the border in Washington state. You have definitely inspired me to get out there and shoot more. I've gone to Maui and Israel in last 3 months. The travel and adventure photography bug has definitely bitten, and I would say a great part of that is because of you! I also love to explore my local area because of your videos. So, thank you, and keep it up!

Tom, I’ve been following you for over a year and in that time I’ve appreciated your frankness and honesty. You share your failures as well as your successes, it feels like you’ve brought us along with you. Here’s the thing... there are always going to be people quick to criticise as soon as things dip. But the followers that matter are the ones who care and who are quite happy to wait for you to find yourself. You can’t possibly provide sparkly content twice a week every single week. Your account of you returning to form is all the more meaningful for having shared with us your time in the doldrums. Just don’t forget, we all have these moments.

Heart, soul, authenticity, integrity... the real thing! You remind me of Ansel Adams and other photo greats w/ your focus on the shot, the story behind the shot, the adventure, the heart, and the art. Who cares what any of us photography neophytes have to say when, it seems, Ansel and others would have enjoyed your channel more than most... because, I believe, your artistic soul is what makes you you (in addition to your skill, your kind heart, etc.). They would have all subscribed to your channel because you could have been friends w/ the same REAL quality that they had. And it is that quality that causes us to call them greats. Bravo Thomas Heaton, you are the real thing. Never quit, and make sure to ignore the pillocky twits that have nothing more creative than they are capable of than tear down something very good instead of build up. Yeah, I know this may seem a bit over the top in light of the classic one-liner-pithy-soundbite style comments. I have only commented on, now, 3 RUclips videos in my entire RUclips experience, and after many, many, many hours of taking in really fine RUclips photography content, yours, to me, is worth a “Way to go, keep going the way your going!.” Here’s hoping for many more like you in the company of great photogs like Mr. Adams... bravo sir, bravo!!! I guess this comment outs me as a fan; well so be it.

I think you are doing yourself a dis-service. I am (perhaps) one of the few people that actually enjoyed your equipment reviews and they stopped me from making an impulsive purchase myself. I've also used your experience to help shape my own research into new gear and the reasons for investing in it. I appreciate that you felt it dragged your channels quality down but I'd like you to know that your content helped me, and continues to give me new ideas. So happy though that you are more comfortable in your own skin. All the best.

In the first few minutes of you speaking, I had a feeling the Canada trip would be the inspiration that you had needed. Those videos introduced me (and I'm sure many others) to Nick, Gavin, Adam and Brent and were fantastic to watch, hilarious but inspiring too. So thank you ;0)

It's nice when the professional is honest about having a hard time. My recent travels have me inspired because my kids are grown and don't pose so cute like they did as little kids. I'm into oceans, islands, flowers, any foreign landscape-country or city. I'm trying to slow down and watching how long it takes for you to get a perfectly great picture is eye--opening and motivating.
