How I made a simple portable tripod antenna

- I cannot take credit for this idea, I'm sure Noah had a version of this on the Ark.
I reused my Proam 20m whip and added this to a tripod with radials. The reason I did this was the mobile antenna on the car wasn't very efficient.
Luckily I have a camera tripod mount from the Superantenna however with a little bit of DIY you can make your own base as shown in the video.
Good luck, tell me how you get on.

I'm a licensed amateur radio operator from the United Kingdom. My RUclips channel features videos focusing on operating portable radio from various locations plus how to videos, tutorials, insights and conversations in the hobby.
Quick tip. Get a strip of the foam water pipe insulation. Cut to length and fit it over the window top and run coax in. Helps keep rain, wind and critters out.
Great idea!
excellent idea, n the ac in when in summer,..

Awesome idea, thanks
Beach towel works too...
Nice work, Carl. Finally someone showing a realistic setup for portable operation.
Just a thought... use red, emergency yellow, or international orange for your radial wires. Even without your glasses you would be able to see them on the ground. Good bit of quick setup and run the band. Oh, it started raining - of course. Keep them coming.
Great video! A tripod with a whip doesn't just work well: It works very very well and is under rated. I primarily use an "Outbacker" tripod with a Terlin tapped vertical for many many years now, 80-10 Metres. LOTS of advantages: No climbing. Stealth. No rotors to break, no ice to bring it down. Move it anywhere. You'll still have one after the Hurricane. Placing a lot of wire on the ground improves it greatly, and it's MUCH easier to place wire on the ground as opposed to in the air. Low angle of attack. Need a NVIS antenna in a pinch? Take a couple of the RADIALS and feed them, draping the centre over the top of the vertical..So it just becomes a low mast. Now you've got a 300+ km circle around you. And again, it's always with you. And stays up.
We've got a lot hams who have either HOA Jack Boots to contend with, or are older and really should avoid climbing anyway. You'll be surprised at the stations you will work. It's great to use at the park, or right from your QTH. Thanks for video! 73 DE W8LV Bill
Thank you great feedback and ideas.
A nice informative video, Carl, some good information on antennas, and what really works, great job, Carl!
A lot of nice contacts using your Icom 7200 and your home made antenna, and you just gave me an idea using your tripod and vertical antenna that I am going to try thanks to you!
I operated in the driveway the other day and had a wrc vertical on a mount bolted to the headboard on the truck. I ran no counterpoises and it worked great. You never know what will work, and what won't until you try. At the end of the day, its all good.
one of the best things about all yr videos Carl, is the fact yr always out n about n trying new things. 73 mate
Thank you
You cant go far wrong Carl if a Man has a Cup of Tea, a Bananna, and a Soggy Loggy to hand lol
nice vid , like the way your always Experimenting trying to achieve the best Tx Rx
always an inspiration to get out there!
Hi Carl. Thanks for another great video, I find watching your vids helps me to get some really good ideas and info. Now getting myself into backpacking portable etc, really find your videos helpful.
Thank you!
thanks.working on this setup now with a shock cord 9.3 foot antenna.
Good stuff Carl.
Great Video...I enjoy this and using the tripod is a really good idea ! Thank You!
Happy Days :-)
Excellent outdoor radio video.
A great radio, cool antenna set up and inclement weather. All great stuff.
Super happy positive joyous celebratory tidings to you Carl for doing something worthy and special :-) Thank you. Cheers.
Thank you Ade I should write an ode to inclement weather and soggy logs.
It's always sunny above the clouds :-)
Hope you get on air come 9th March - Commonwealth Day. I'll be on for 24 hours calling CQ.
Hi Carl. Good to see you out again. Its a great option for increasing the efficiency of mobile whips. I use a tripod without leg stays to the centre column so I can get a really wide stable base. I didn't dare use it on Sunday at Merryton Low though, it was just too windy so I used the mag mount on the car. Keep up the great work buddy. 73
Yes on Sunday I used a MFJ 1979 with small tripod and pegs, video out this weekend on that.
Thank you Carl for the idea I will play with that today from across the pond w3oj
Great idea for CB and GMS/FMRS, or even TV portable use, or if you don't want to mount a permanent antenna on your house, or live in an apartment or condo.
Yes you’re right in saying that you are portable. But keep the them video’s coming Carl as we all enjoy your commitment to the hobby from 2e0zwz Steve.
Good stuff mate. I might try that with my Atas 120 instead of using the car.
Nice video carl
I enjoyed your video very much, thumbs up also.....
A great tripod in screwfix for 15quid by erbauer . Really wide feet and can be combined with another set up to about 3m. Using one with my atas 120.
Carl, the part holding the tripod down is a doingy doingy.
Aha! Yes that's the technical name.
Mfj-1979. It can be part of the mfj-2286. It's all you'll need if you want a ground based vertical. Very easy to put onto a camera tripod. Better bandwidth than a hamstick.
Nice one Carl - good work on the tripod and the counterpoise assembly! Some decent contacts there and again, the front end on that radio really is superb isn't it? We have one at the club.
Great idea someone mentioned about the foam on the window for the feeder. I was thinking of one of those rain deflectors we see on taxis would work too.
Good timing on this - we were discussing the tripod and mobile whips at the club the other day; I'll share this to the lads.

Using the same setup, I have found that lifting the radials off the ground makes for a better SWR.
I,m also a great fan of /p or portable operation, mainly because of the reduced noise level.
All your videos are in my opinion very helpful to the newcomer to this fascinating "Hobby" of ours, HAM RADIO.
I would say you are portable!
My experience working out and about has proved that the best DX happens when you are near the sea, a simple quarter-wave with 16 radials or four wavelengths of wire at the frequency of operation spread around the base of your aerial has worked very well for me over a number of years.
The voltage and Gain of the aerial measured with 16 radials has the best near and far-field radiation.
I use a simple field strength meter to measure this.
You can easily make a field strength device Carl from an AVO, a pen body a coil variable capacitor and a diode, It is called a diode probe and is used to check the resonance frequency on a PCB circuit, adding an aerial gives a simple relative indication of the electric field strength.
Height plays a big part, living near the North Pennines gives me the opportunity to work from 600 metres, in excess of 1800 feet, VHF & UHF comes alive with three to five element homemade yagi aerials six feet above ground level.

73 good luck!
hi nice job i used to dx mobile with the pro am antennas. what would work better is a 1/4 wave wire on the side of a 7m pole with some ground wires i know you have a dx commnder but for a quick set up its job done
Great radio fun Carl. Real world radio opps. 73
Hi, Carl! The rain may have caused the SWR to be higher than you had wished. Try again on a dry day. Good video! I enjoy watching yours and am subscribed.
Thank you!
Portable / Mobile / Playing Radio ,fun ! 73
"soggy loggy" love it Carl, nice video, 73s - G8PNE
If you had a tent, camping, table in tent, batteries etc
You're only wrong about one thing. Noah used a coil loaded for 160m, 64:1 end fed, 37 foot long bit of Papyrus, with 20 or so radials made from the snakes on the boat......
...and everlasting rain...
Well that works!! you just need a better tripod with spikes on the legs? better ones have rubber feet that turn into spikes. Not to convinced about radial though, but I think you need them on the earth rather than concrete? maybe the radial need to be the same length as the antenna height? Nice sunny you chose for this...73's Paul
Yes I'm going to focus on radials with my car boot portable set up, cut some new ones.
Sorry - meant to add that the audio is just coming out of one channel. I only realised as I was listening with only one earbud in and when you use the cam looking at the radio it went silent as it's only using the left channel. I notice someone else mentioned it too.
You might want to get some wind deflector for ur car £20 from eBay that means u can have ur window open and still run the coax cable in to the car but keeping the rain out worth a look
Hi Carl..I love those Ampro whips.I have them for most of the HF bands and they always give great results.73.Ian.G7HFS/PA3IKH
watson multi ranger i put it on a old crome fan cover on the ground swr 1.1 73 nige
Carl great video! Thank you for sharing! 73 KJ6IHZ ✌
Great video Carl. Is that a mobile rig stuck to the front windo? Maybe you can show how you did that. 73 Leo.
No it's just sitting there with no fastening (just about!) I pack it away when finished
This is an excellent video with one exception..you move the camera too fast for a video...and you could hold it more steady...we get dizzy watching it...
Noted.
How long were your wires? Correction how long are your radios?
Hi Carl. I have a couple of those whips, one for 20 and one for 40 which I normally use on a mag mount. Gonna have to rig up something similar to you and give it a go. Did you make the radials any particular length ?
At least a wavelength however there are many articles on radials that could provide the science but I believe a wavelength and all equal spaced out
I meant to ask you how long are your radials and how do you calculate the length? Thanks from w30j
There's a few decent videos on the subject by DX Commander, it depends on the lowest band your using, I think its a full wave but please check Cal's videos on it
How do you make one of these? Im looking to get into CB radios and would like to talk to other people around the world.
Carl, are you aware your audio goes to left channel only at times?
As usual another great video.
Not intentionally, let me check
@@M0SZT occurs when you are on a QSO...
I'm a newbie, I have a tripod antenna like yours. Do radials ground? If not do I need to ? Thx
Radials provide the other half of the antenna
Carl, have you tired the mfj1979? i have it with Chameleon Hybrid Micro...and two ground planes..works well..
Yes I tried mine first time last weekend, video out this weekend
use two proam,s/ ampros and make a di pole or use an mfj 1979
Any more details.of the homebrew "plate" pls?
It was the plate from the superantenna so not homebrew
Not your one, but you mentioned a homebrew one made by Mick?
Great video. What's your farthest contact on this rig?
Hi sorry missed your comment, with data mode DX is typical, with voice it’s a challenge on 50 watts, mostly European contacts with rare US and Brazil contacts
Hi Carl, I notice on your windscreen you have the Yaseu head mounted. What mount are you using? Great video by the way. Love the Ham sticks. Cheers, Pat.
I found a Yaesu plate that clipped onto a suction mount. Search for: Car Suction Cup & Dash Mount for Yaesu FT-7800 FT-8800R
Hi Carl, all noted and thanks for replying.
You didn’t happen to be recording our QSO on 40m on Sunday did you, was about 3pm, cheers
I'll check and add to the video if I have should be out this weekend
Cheers
Are you riding Icom through the car battery, or a spare one? I'm paranoid about using too much off the little car battery I have on my Alto so I have a bunch of spare batteries I hope to be able to use.
I'm getting ready back on air and your videos is really firing me up.
I'm getting all set up for a try tomorrow evening or on Saturday. Got a boot lid antenna adapter from Amazon yesterday, got my Watson Multi-ranger. I had a 14MHz antenna somewhere too, I just can't find it anymore and it's seriously getting to my nerves.Next task is getting the FT-847 out of its box and all ready.... I just realised it's been almost a decade since I had the Watson and I never properly used it. :(
I use separate battery, good to hear you're getting out on the air it's fun.
I'll definitely do the same. Just managed to dig out my missing 20m antenna hiding in the loft, also found a 2m horizontal dipole as well! Not bad going for a short morning so far.
Nice one Carl. It follows on from my video. Well done. 73s Peter G3OJV.
Hi Carl. Fine business there in UK. How long are those radials? Thanks, KC3BXZ Joe 73
2.5m
Thanks, catch you on 20, perhaps. Cheers, J
I have a ampro whip and I did have a tripod doing nothing :-)
Have you grounded the radio to the clasis of your car ?
I didn't but I'm interested to know why
@@M0SZT for safety reasons and reduce Nasty RF getting int your car electronics and build up static electricity from your aerial and protech and damage to your Radio ! Have I won a competition 73's G0MEJ
@@radiolinux45 I'm considering a choke of some type to stop common mode currents. I did get awful static during a snow storm but that's hard to combat. I'm now reading up on mobile operating (or operating inside a metal box) and grounding.
Where's the tripod? All I see is a radio on a dash.
koja dosada..
You are not mobile you are A
Definitely NOT /A if anything /P but not a problem as its not mandatory
The age old debate. In this case Carl is definitely /P which is dictated by his station set up, however the RSGB has changed the ruling on this and it is no longer compulsory to state which, however they do ask that if you are going use /P /M or /A that you use it correctly. Time to run for cover....hihi
😴🥱🥱🥱 he could use /p or /m and hey it does not matter at all! Anymore... there are NO definitive lines drawn. Better still put the antenna in the middle of the roof and forget it! As for SWR, when mobile portable or even at home, really what are you sweating about! Splitting hairs springs to mind, nice to see experimentation though but keep it real.
Hi mate.
Q : did you get better results from moving the radials onto the grass vs the asphalt?
I liked the use of the doingy-doingy to stabilise the tripod.
Yep, /P cos you you can’t drive away ‘as is’... all good Carl. Thanks for interesting vid. 73 Nick M1DDD
