Three and a half years ago I just finished paying off my car when the engine decided to have catastrophic engine damage at 75 MPH. Cost more to fix it than it was worth. Luckily I was working from home at the time. I saved up for ten months until I found something that worked for me. I found a 2003 Mercury Grand Marquis owned by an elderly couple. The car had less than 71k miles on it. Those cars can last a really long time. I snagged it and am* enjoying dirt cheap insurance and practically free annual registration. Best part is no car payments. No car payments are key to surviving & thriving in this crap economy & inflation.

My friends tell me I buy way too many things. What they don't realize is that I'm a bargain hunter. I never pay full price. I have the patience to wait years for something to come on sale.
For example, today I saw the clearance sale on the Flex 24v Fan. The regular price is $120. I've wanted one but not for $120. This morning, they went on sale for $29 each. I bought 4.😊 The four fans I bought today are equal to one fan from yesterday. 😂
I do this to resell for profit or give them away. I never buy flash stuff.

This is a great message. Clothing is a difficult one for me because I have autoimmune health issues affecting my skin. Pretty much everything I wear in fall-winter-spring is layers and layers of expensive, pure cashmere. I even need to wear it to bed. Cashmere arm-warmers, cashmere skull cap, cashmere socks, etc. I also have $1000 handmade, therapeutic suede winter boots, for example.
But… I don’t have any excess clothing in my closet - I wear what I own regularly. I don’t wear makeup, don’t dye my hair, don’t get my nails done. I cook and eat at home every day. I drive a used car, that’s paid off. I have always enjoyed living a modest lifestyle and it’s paying off now that I’m older - I can afford to look after my health with special clothing that helps me feel comfortable.

Excellent commentary. A couple points: (1) it seems a lot of people are also very worried about lavishing their kids with all kinds of stuff from nice cars when they turn 16 to expensive extracurricular activities (10s of thousands a year on travel sports, etc.) and expensive private schools. Another one that gets me is the real estate agents who will try to persuade young professionals (as I was) to buy as much house as they can possibly afford, telling them not to worry because their career is on the upswing and surely their income will increase significantly over the following 5 years. I turned that noise off and bought a house at age 38 that was probably half what I could have gotten had I been willing to get extended out. I was able to put 20% down, do a 15 year mortgage and ultimate paid it off about 5 years after purchase.

The flip side is saving too much, going through life denying yourself the things you would like, then retire with more than you can possibly spend AND you’ve conditioned yourself not to spend it. Some will say it’s a good problem to have, and that’s true, but you could have lived a more fulfilling life.
That said, I bought used cars and drove them 10 years or more, lived in a nice but moderate home (downsized since), saved and invested prudently. At 60 I hit my number and pulled the plug, been living the good life ever since.
