    A few year back I was heavily debating which machine to buy for my first. It was between the Casa V (precursor to the Go) and the Rancilio Silvia (ironically that was version 5 at the time)
    There were reasons then why the Casa V was a better machine but what you couldn’t to it then was add a PID to it, which was easily available and possible with the Silvia. For that reason, I went with the Silvia. This is a beautiful machine and if my Silvia makes great espresso I know this will too but a Silvia with an Auber PID still beats this for ONE reason - it can do Preinfusion. If Profitec were able to achieve that with the GO then out of the box, it would be, probably, the only single boiler machine to ever buy.

    I'd love to see a comparison with the Ascaso Dream PID. It seems the Dream has the edge with features as it has adjustable pre infusion and volumetric control. The Go is slightly cheaper though so it's a tough call. Steam quality doesn't matter for me as I don't make milk drinks.

    Excellent review. I have had my Profitec GO for 2 months and I am very pleased with it. I am making single drinks and have no problem with the single boiler work flow as outlined here. When I occasionally want to use a taller cup I remove the drip tray grid and set the cup in the tray. This way I can brew the espresso directly into hot water for an Americano easily. Cannot use a scale, but as my grind is dialed in, I can draw by time, 30 seconds. So far, I have not found a quirk or downside to the machine. PS the steam wand has been upgraded to cool touch.

    Thanks Marc, great review, couple of questions: I'm a little confused as to why a pre-brew flush would be required? I didn't think this would be the case with a single boiler with PID.
    I had thought the cooling flush type scenario was really only necessary for HX machines. As it's a relatively small boiler the pre- brew flush will drop the temperature quite a bit will it not when the room temperature water is then introduced into the boiler? Second question would be is this the same PID that's on the higher end Profitec / ECM models and if so can you go in to the advanced settings and change the offset temp? thinking this might solve the issue if for some reason the brew temp is starting out too hot. Thank you!

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  Год назад

      Hi Daniel, Thanks for the comment and question. The GO has a boiler volume of ~400ml. The flush turns over ~40ml of water based on typical vibe pump flow rate of ~8ml/sec. The PID does have an advance mode like others. Just got in there and believe the offset is set to 10 degrees. With that, what you suggest is possible in theory but could have unintended consequences like brew temp dropping below optimal as a shot progresses. One could do essentially the same thing by just setting the t1 PID brew temp 10 degrees lower. Keep in mind this results in lower temps not just for the water but the mass of the boiler, group head and PF as well.

    Hey Marc, thanks for the review! Does the steam wand work as a hot water wand as well? If not, what are some recommended ways to make an Americano with this machine? Thanks!

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  Год назад +3

      Hi Adam, Yes, the steam wand will put out hot water. When doing so expect some water dripping from the group. You cvan live with that or another option is to mount a spare portafilter with a backflush disc installed to prevent the dripping when taking water from the wand. One could also dispense hot water directly from the group head into cup. Might want a short flush prior to push off any grounds on the shower screen.

      Sure! But do all the Gaggia's shortcomings account for a ~2.4x higher price increase on the Profitec (at least here in my country)? If so, then you're not on the market for the Gaggia :) Both are great machines in their own right, but I wouldn't compare them.

  • @jolkil

    Great review! Would you still recommend the Go even without pre-infusion or is this reason enough to go for the Ascaso Steel Uno Pid (and its much higher price)? They seem to check the same boxes except for the pre-infusion. Thanks!

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  Год назад +5

      Hi j, Thanks for the question. I have not used the Ascaso machine so cannot speak to it's pre-infusion capabilities. I can say in some cases pre-infusion is overrated. Especially true in machines using vibration pumps like the GO which build pressure and flow much more slowly than higher-end machines with rotary pumps. The slow build is in essence a type of pre-infusion.

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  Год назад +2

      Hey RRGB, Thanks for the kind comment and question. Yes there is a workaround to do pre-infusion. You can pre-wet the coffee puck by turning pump on briefly, turning off and waiting a few seconds then extract as normal. For more traditional pre-infusion/flow rate control open the steam wand while the pump is on to bleed pressure/flow from the brewing circuit. Hi DY, We have had the Stone in for evaluation and are not carrying the machine at this point. When I initially looked at the machine I was a little put off by the plastic actuator on top of the group. The slab side panels are unique. In a general sense I find the overall build quality higher in the the GO. I'm not entirely certain how temps are controlled in the Stone. It's PID in the GO with the shot timer. Pricing I see shows the Stone about 50% more than the GO - not sure I could justify that difference.

  • @rafaelrgbarrocas

    Hi Marc! As always an excellent video, congratulations!
    I'm having trouble to maintaining the pressure of 10 bars while extracting the espresso. After adjusting the grind size according to the usual dialing-in espresso procedure, considering the extraction time and the final total weight, and starting the espresso extraction, the pressure gauge starts at 10 bars but after a few seconds the pressure starts to drop, going to 9, 8 and reaching at 7 bars. I've tried to change all possible settings like coffee quality and quantity (18g to 20g), tamper pressure and grind size but I can't get to a constant pressure of 10 bars during the extraction. When I grind very fine I can even stay at 10 bars but the extraction is very slow and I don't reach the espresso time range. Do you have any clues as to what is causing this?
    I have a Profitec GO and a Eureka mignon XL.
    Thank you in advance!

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  Год назад +4

      Hi RRGB! Thanks for the kind comment and question. It's not unusual for pressure to drop as extraction progresses and nothing to worry about. Pressure drops even in high-end rotary pump machines - especially noticeable on E61 group machines with a pressure gauge on the group. Think about the solids being removed from the puck as the extraction progresses. That reduces the pucks restriction and pressure on the puck decreases. I say nothing to worry about as studies have shown little difference in TDS in cup with variations of 2-3 bar of pressure. Flow rate is much more important.

      The interesting thing about Profitec GO is the versatility to adjust the espresso extraction. I changed the pressure to 9 bars and the temperature from 203ºF to 197ºF so this pressure variation during extraction decreased as well as the taste became sweeter!

      @@DaadWerkelijk Hi, Using the Pro 300 you can brew and steam simultaneously so workflow is a lot faster and there's no cooling down of boiler required after steaming. Both machines have PID but there is some brew temp variation on the GO after steaming as the machine gets cooled down and settles back to it's programmed brew temp. Steaming on the Pro 300 has no impact on brew temps.

    If I was mainly an espresso drinker, I think this would be my go to machine! I think also for making two small Italian Cappucinos (using a single shot and splitting the double shot into two cups) this will work very well! But if you have more than one person that wants to drink a late or flat white the workflow to cool the machine down between shots would be a massive turn off for me. Paired with a nice grinder this will give you tons of control to dial in the coffee.

    • @kalanphelps9498
      @kalanphelps9498 Год назад +2

      i think that the 2 ounce rule is a bit of an old fashioned way to think about it. for the better results, you should use a scale to measure input, and output of espresso. volumetric measurements aren't ideal in coffee as different coffees have different densities. and the wonder of the 2:1 ratio is that you can scale up, or down, depending on how much you wan to make. so you could (in theory) make a giant thermos of espresso, although, that's not quite practical. and also as coffee ages it has less co2 in it, so as time goes on, your relative coffee too water ratio is changing depending on how old your coffee is. so long story short, use a scale to measure your grounds, and your output. use ratios, and taste your espresso!! (p.s it doesn't have to be 1:2, different coffees extract differently, play around, find what you like best!) i hope this helped out! good luck with your spro, taste it out, and experiment to see what works for your equipment, coffee, and tongue!!

      From what I’ve read about ratio, it can also depend on the beans and your taste preference. I used to pull 2 ounces from only like 18g. Now I do closer to a 1:2.5 ratio using 22g and love the results. Pulling 2 ounces in under 30 seconds with 18g will flow pretty fast, whereas a 1:2 ratio will flow much slower if it’s within the same amount of time. I think pulling 2 ounces under 30 seconds makes it more thin in flavor and not as good.

As you use the machine the group gasket should break in and allow the PF to clock-in further without so much force. Stock group gaskets use a hard rubber compound. If you'd like easier clock-in you could replace the stock gasket with a softer silicone gasket: www.wholelattelove.com/products/caffewerks-silicone-group-gasket-73-x-57-x-8mm

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  4 месяца назад +1

      Hi joe, The pressure difference is very common in espresso machines with vibration pumps. In most machines the pressure is read very close to the pump. The internal piping causes some pressure loss between reading point and what's actually present in the group. Here's the thing... What you're setting with the OPV is the maximum static (no flow) pressure. If you set to 10 you'll likely be 1-2 bar lower within the group during an actual extraction as pressure is released through the coffee. I think people get a little over the top about the 9 bar dogma. It's unlikely anyone is going to taste a difference between shot pulled +/- 1 bar. Do experiment with different brew pressures and see how they change flavor but don't get to wrapped up in 1-2 bar differences.

    Hi I recently purchased this machine and received it. I was following the instructions to get the machine up and running, but the boiler is not filling. The temperature gauge will continue to go up, but the pressure gauge needle does not move. Very little water is dispensed form the group head. Help?

      Hi vex, Any progress yet with boiler filling? I'm assuming you completed the initial FIL procedure as described in the manual and ollowed the pump to run for the minimum 30 seconds? If still having issues and in US/Canada you can contact our tech support staff here for additional assistance: www.wholelattelove.com/pages/contact-us

    Could this be plugged into a timer- or smartplug…?

      Hi FW, Yes, if properly rated to handle the power load. The power switch is mechanical and not electronic so timer or smartplug will work.

    It's been a little mini dream of mine to buy a quick mill pippa now for over a year. I wanted to know if you could give me a very concise rundown of which machine you think is better. I understand there's a lot of talk about PID, but from everything I've read and watched, the Pippa doesn't have issues with keeping temp. Overall, it seems like a more high-mid tier product to me, and I love the whole hacks video you folks have up for manual pre-infusion with single boiler machines like the Pippa which has me sold on best bang-for-buck when you're on a budget but absolutely adore having the best possible singular cup of latte a day. Is there anyway you could help me out here?

      Hi A, Thanks for the question. The Profitec GO, with PID is a bit more consistent with brew temps. Also has the shot timer which some users appreciate and larger brew pressure gauge. Both machines are premium grade single boiler machines. As mentioned, the GO is built on the bones of the ECM Casa and ECM is considered tops in overall build quality. The Pippa has the side loading water reservoir so works well if you have overhead cabinetry which restricts access to the top of machine. Both machines are featured side by side in our Top 5 Favorite Entry-Level Machines of 2022 video: ruclips.net/video/CFTuKEFEWZc/видео.html

      It's pretty obvious from videos alone that the build quality on the Profitec (and ECM Casa V) is much higher than on the Pippa. IMO, the main draw to the Pippa is the side-loading water reservoir. The slightly larger boiler is a wash/irrelevant and regardless of how well it maintained temp, is no substitute for PID, which allows you to CHANGE temp.

      Hi MP, The wand will dispense hot water by turning on the brew switch. You will have some dripping from the group when doing that.

    Anyone upgrade to this from a Gaggia Classic with PID? Wondering if it’s worthwhile or not.
