Link Wray's 'Ace of Spades' ...played by Jez Quayle

  • A great Link Wray instrumental that was originally released in 1966. As in his instrumental 'Rumble', Link used power chords around an (approximate) 12-bar blues chord progression. Link's instrumental 'Fat Back' is pretty much the same as this one. Like a lot of Link's music, it's not too difficult to play ...simple, but sooo effective ...and innovative, of course! Link's timing was often a bit weird ...count the beats and bars! In live concerts his timing was quite 'free' ...like a lot of early blues musicians ...but it didn't matter, it just worked. Quentin Tarrantino used this tune in his 1994 film 'Pulp Fiction' together with Link's 'Rumble'. Here I'm playing along with a backing track I recorded.

    For those interested, I found out that the first chord is an Fmaj7, the second is the same shape but 3 frets down, then followed by an A (easier to fret with the second finger on the DGB strings). Thanks Jez, this helped me learn it (still a long way though)

    Thanks for this. I'm learning the bass on this for a band i'm joining and your playing is v useful. V true that the timing is interesting.....the notes and riffs are all easy enough, its the timing which is tricky!

    what are the chords for this?

  • @fabiopunk1661
    @fabiopunk1661 10 лет назад

    correction, the chord is a Fmaj7/C, first on fret 3 then on fret 5. By the way, I hate this guy: he does not even look at his fingers!
