Fantastic review Aaron! I am relatively new to CC guitars as I've had Taylors for over 20 years. Your video explains and demos all of the answers to my questions. TY!
Cheers. I love these guitars!
This is an excellent video. Very helpful 👍
I received a fantastic Cole Clark Angel 1 made from Southern Silky Oak for Xmas from my family. The guitar and its pickup system are brilliant. I really enjoyed your review, it covered all the pickup's features. A first rate job. I look forward to seeing your review of the guitar. Best wishes from Melbourne, Australia. 😀🦘
Thanks Michael. The Angels look awesome!
Another great video, I did not know about this guitar brand at all and indeed the electronic system seems very well thought out and put together. The sound coming out of it is a step above other systems.
I’ve been playing a Cole Clark since I made this video. It’s excellent for gigging.
Wow Aaron I love that guitar
Dude you make so good reviews. Keep de great job man 🤘🏻
Thank you!
Great review of a great pickup/guitar:) I’ve been using CC since 2008, started out with the 2 ways pickup and now with the 3 ways and it still blows my head off!!! CC has never let me down, either the guitar or the pickup! Before I discovered CC I was using Takamine and a bunch of other guitars/pickups( even had an endorsment deal with Tak). After 30 years as a pro, I think that CC has the most natural, feedback resisting, easy to use and dynamic pickup system out there!
Did you upgrade your 2008 guitar from the 2 way to 3 way, or did you buy a new guitar with the new system?
I have a 2008 FL3 from and considering getting them to put the new system in my guitar for about AU$500.
Hi:)
I have a couple with the 2 way system; two six strings and three 12 strings)
I also have a redwood 6 string and a 12 string with the old 3 way system and a thinline with the new 3 way system( my favourite so far:)
Very intriguing guitar! Love the hybrid sound!!! Intelligent way to use all 3 but each sensibly EQ‘d (comb filtered) to alleviate its respective weaknesses and leverage its respective strengths! Would love to learn more about the guitar.
Thanks Scott I will review this one in a future video.
They are such great guitars. The pickup system is superb, no other guitar maker’s pickups come close. Straight into a PA and you’re away.
I agree. It’s fantastic!
I put the bridge face more toward the bridge like 10-11 o’clock. Then I put the mic at like 8 or 9 - just barley on, then the middle at 0 and the bass and treble half way up and it’s a gorgeous sound. 90% of the time those are my settings on my redwood top Angel 2
good review Aaron. Be interesting to compare the Martin and your other guitar pickups
Another great review, Aaron! I have owned three Cole Clark guitars now and still own two. They are the only guitar I have ever been happy with the amplified tone right out of the box. I always struggled to find a pickup system to put into my high-end Martin and other boutique guitars that sounded really good. It was especially challenging when going to open mics because I'd play predominantly fingerstyle and the tone would always be muddy and tubby. I'd need to carry my own EQ pedal to brighten the tone. But the first time I plugged a Cole Clark into my Bose S1 amp at a store the tone was fantastic right out of the gate with everything flat! Need to strum with a pick? Everything flat sounds great. Oh, now you need to play delicate fingerstyle? Dial back the mids and lows, bump the highs and the gain and voila - instant great tone! Cole Clark is my go-to guitar for live gigging. I love their all-blackwood models, which is what Aaron plays here!
I am fingerstyle performer too. The cole clark is my dream guitar. Cole clark told me for percussive guitar style of playing, i should go for the all blackwood model. I need to save a hella lot to be able to own one for sure.
Worth saving up for. I ended up eventually selling off the Fat Lady and kept the Angel for almost 4 years before selling that one as well. But I never stopped loving that pickup system so I just picked up one of their Thin Line models in all blackwood. Right back to great plugged in tone and the comfort level of the thin line body is fantastic.@@sitiimanina
I bought a Cole Clark Angel 2 with the humbucker built in. I’m still tweaking it to find that perfect acoustic tone but I know it’s in there somewhere. I too am a looper as part of my live set and I have to say the CC’s with the humbuckers in, are the ULTIMATE looping guitar. They even surpass the Acoustasonics in my opinion, because of the sound, the 2 separate outputs and the routing options this offers. I currently utilise the main input (for humbucker) and fx loop input (for acoustic) of my Headrush Gigboard so that I can have preset effects that will only act on the relevant pickup. This guitar and setup has afforded me so many options it’s mind blowing. All of my current arrangements are taking on a new life and I can now play new songs that I could never even think of playing before, my favourite being Long way down by the Goo Goo dolls. Thanks for the vid!
Thanks Mike. I’d love to get an Angel with the Humbucker at some point!
Great guitar Aaron tempted to buy one.
Great guitars!
I liked the Cole Clark from the first time I saw you use it . The unique plugged in sound I noticed straightway. To which I commented about on your live concert as very good sound , it was warm and real sounding through your rig so obviously I love it an want to see a review of the guitar . What model are you using ? I own several Martins and am a Martin man tried and true but I love this Cole Clark.
I enjoy my CC in a live situation. Like any guitar it has its place and limitations. I like the open airy sound for strumming. For any serious lead playing with other guitars or in a band it doesn’t stand out enough in the mids - any single note playing needs more mids (not unlike an electric guitar in a band setting). I’ve tried pedals to boost the mids but it just doesn’t have them in the basic guitar sound.
Now, I’m using two acoustics guitars for live work ie the CC and another more mid-focused guitar. This works for me. Have fun! ❤
Why not turn up the face sensor or mid control in the Cole Clark? I find I get too much mid range when I do that.
@@aaronshortmusic Good question, Aaron. I find the acoustic sound of the CC is shimmery which is a very pleasant sound, and it comes through when amplified. The pickup system works beautifully for this sound. From treble to bass it is very balanced with a 'neutral' voice.
I've played a lot of guitars and own a Gibson and a Martin. The Gibson has a classic mid-range voice ie a little compressed with the pronounced Gibson sound. I bought this Gibson for playing lead lines over another strummed guitar. I think I missed this sound when I got the CC. My Cole Clarke is the AN2EC-BLBL, and I highly recommend it for a guitar and vocal live setup, particularly for a soloist.
Great review Aaron. I tried several Cole Clarks and I can say I don't like how the mic works at all: the more you dial it in, the more you lose attack and presence. Maton AP5 PRO to my ears, hands and taste works way better.
This!
U r awesome ! Great Review !
Thank you!
@@aaronshortmusic Make compare with Taylor, Martin and Gibson, there is no content like this in RUclips ! Thanks !
@@simonefarialima3647 I will do!
Excellent review bud and excellent tone shaping, your final settings sounded superb.
Have you tried the latest one with the extra tone switch?
Also what kind of battery does it run?
Thanks dude.
9v battery. I have been using the new version for a few months and I LOVE it. Video coming soon!
@@aaronshortmusic Thanks Aaron I’ll check it out 👍
UST + SBT + mic - again with the winning formula :)
3 pickups are better than 1 (usually).
@@aaronshortmusic - just like two heads are better than one? :P
Cole Clark’s plugged in sound is the best.
It is excellent.
hi Aaron, how does one test and, if necessary, change the battery on this system?
Hi. The battery life is LONG! I play out 3-4 times per week and could just replace it once per year and be fine. The newer preamps also have an LED battery light that illuminate when ten hours remain.
What were you saying about finger style don't have the mic all the way up on the pick up ?
It can cut through the mix better with less microphone.
Have you used this guitar with the NuX Optima Air Acoustic Preamp? Would you need to? Would the pedal add anything to the sound?
You could use the Optima Air, VPDI etc with it. The Cole Clark system is amazing but does not sound like an external microphone. Having said that I would personally use it without those pedals then record with a real microphone at home.
@@aaronshortmusic I have 2 CCs. Agree with you that they sound excellent plugged in but wouldn't use these for recording as I also use with a microphone. For recording purposes I think my Martins sound better.... better clarity. I think the CCs have a little way to go to catch up to the big brands.... but they are heading in the right direction. How long before Taylor/Martin have these pick ups?
@@Soccernz007 I don’t see Martin using something like this. They are more about keeping the natural look and sound in tact where Cole Clark focus more on the plugged in sound.
What happened to your Maton? I prefer Maton acoustically and pickup...and Cole and Clark took the concept from their days working for Maton, but Maton sounds better acoustically big time and pickup is similar....but Maton has the history. Thanks for the demos and gear videos
Hi Rick I still have it. I just love the face sensor in the Cole Clark as it adds another layer that the AP5 Pro does not have.
Hi Rick. Just a note to correct a couple of things here. Clark developed the face brace system entirely separate to his work at Maton. In fact, it was before he worked there. The only similarity between their system and ours is that they use a 6 loaded piezo under saddle assembly as many companies do - Takamine, Ovation etc. Outside of that, they couldn't be any more different.
We are big fans of Maton around here and think it's great that Melbourne has two world wide guitar brands, but other than being made in the same city, their build, timbers, pickup, bracing and just about everything else is entirely different. Comparing them is apples and oranges.... everyone should have both.
@@ColeClarkGuitarsAU Great answer and that’s why I do have both lol!
HI Aaron, after you have reviewed this, what's your opinion of this one compared to Maton AP5 Pro?
At the moment I prefer it...
Hi Aaron. you still prefer the Cole Clark over any other system?
@@Whitty43 Cole Clark pickup is probably my favorite overall.
@@aaronshortmusic thanks Aaron, I've just purchased a FL1 in silky Oak. I'll let you know what it's like when it arrives. thanks again
@@Whitty43 Congrats!
Just hope the battery lasts forever on AN2EC
Nice playing, good performance ! i'm glade to find you :) Big like, i spend good times , a big like ! Hope to Keep on touch, see you soon on our channel to share about music ✌wish you the best for 2021👍
what is the model of that guitar? thanks
Cole Clark FL2 BLBL
What model is this? Cheers
That is a FL2 BLBL.
Hi Aaron, is this the Fat Lady 2 model?. Great video!
Yes it is. Thank you!
They should have named this, “the ugly lady. That sings good;”
I'm in two minds about the aesthetic. To me the positive is, they're doing something fresh and different to other brands.
While I love the idea of what this pickup is trying to do, I'm not sure it is as amazing as you are portraying it to be.
So you can blend 3 different pickups, AND you have a 3 band EQ after that to adjust tone.
What this means, is that you can still only get a great sound OUT of the jack, if there is a great sound being fed TO the jack.
An EQ can only cut certain frequencies, or boost certain frequencies hard wired by components and their values.
If the guitar itself is not physically capable of producing the amazing basic raw sound ingredients, and the pick ups able to capture all of that rich amazing sound, for the EQ to manipulate, then the EQ cannot magically transform a poor quality raw sound into something magical.
I thought the final sound was pretty cheap, it did not impress me even slightly, sorry.
Fine for strumming open chords and singing pop/rock over a shitty PA system in a pub, to 20 completely drunk people who wouldn't know the difference between 20 guitars.
I’m sorry but I completely disagree with you 100%. There is simply nothing better than this system and if you haven’t tried it then you are missing out. I can say that after gigging the guitars for 18 months and trying almost every pickup on the market.
@@aaronshortmusic Maybe there is nothing better than this system, I'm not disagreeing with that, and never could until I hear this system directly compared to several others in a comparison test.
I have been playing guitars for decades, and have been a DJ since 1980. On top of that I have an advanced national diploma in music technology.
So I do know a little about this subject 🙂
After trying (and owning) dozens of different types and brands of guitar, I know different woods, different shaped guitar bodies, and the way they are constructed, makes a massive difference to the tone. And also how you play a guitar makes a massive difference, I'm sure we can both agree on those things right ?
So, for my preferred style, which is fingerstyle played with the flesh no nails, no finger picks, no plectrum, and no strumming, I have experimented and found the best sound I can achieve is from a hand made Lowden medium sized body, with an LR Baggs anthem pick up.
The actual Lowden is made from top grade tonewoods, the construction of the instrument is higher than anything else in it's price range, unique bracing systems, and a 5 piece super stiff neck. This results in an almost perfectly balanced sound from the highest playable note to the open top string lowest (probably a low C in open C tuning).
The dynamic range, overtones, harmonics, and sustain is better than anything else I have ever played. So, no matter how good a pickup is, if the most accurate pickup in the world was fitted to my guitar, and then fitted to a cheap Fender, and the two compared, obviously that pick up would be picking up a better sound from my guitar.
Can we agree on that initially ?
@@DjNikGnashers You can now install the Cole Clark pickup into any guitar but from playing the guitars so much I actually really like the guitars themselves and they are constructed to sound good amplified with the pickup system. Sometimes a guitar that is very resonant and that has a lot of frequencies does not amplify well as they can feedback or have certain ringing tones jump out both acoustically and through the pickup. I always recommend the Anthem as one of my favorite after market systems but there is a power and expressive range in the Cole Clark that you cannot find in any other system. I really think you should try one (be sure it’s the PG3 as the system in this video review is the older system).
@@aaronshortmusic I would really like to hear direct back-to-back comparisons with this Cole Clark against the LR Baggs, and others such as the fishman etc.
It sounds like it would be very much worth the time in listening to.
Maybe it's the way the audio in this video was processed, but it genuinely did not sound anything special, sorry, I am honestly not trying to downplay for the sake of being biased towards another system. If this sounded better than the LR Baggs Anthem in my guitar, I would buy one and use it, tomorrow !!
@@DjNikGnashers I have a video of the newer PG3 in the playlist and I play the same thing in each video so you can open multiple windows and play them against each other. Of course there is more than just sound. The way the pickup reacts on a loud stage and the way that it feels is also important. It makes you feel more inspired to perform.
