    Swarm type of service could be very interesting for 3rd world countries, especially the very remote regions of those countries. This could be very transformative, as getting Cell Service is often hard since towers and antennas infrastructure is needed. If this type of setup were optimized for extreme rural areas it could be a game changer for those areas.
    Areas I am thinking of are Africa, where prior to Covid I traveled and worked in a lot.

    • @LTVoyager
      @LTVoyager 3 года назад +1

      @@golgothan Every billing scheme has its downside. Data usage schemes make those who use a lot of data subsidize those who use very little as their variable rate has to cover the fixe costs for those who use little data. We have the same problem in the electric utility world where those who use little power get subsidized as their bills don’t even cover the fixed cost of providing them service as the fixed monthly charges have always been set too low. The fairest way overall requires a three-tiered billing scheme that can get a little complex. You need a flat monthly charge that covers the fixed costs of providing service. You need a demand charge that covers those who don’t use a lot of data in total, but use high bandwidth in short bursts which requires large bandwidth capability that may be used only a few hours a day. And then you need a data charge that covers the variable cost of providing the the data used. Some electric companies are now doing this, but it certainly complicates the billing and can be very hard to explain to residential customers who don’t understand the underlying concepts.

      The closer we can get the cost to the value, the better.
      That's what makes this video interesting; it seems like they could use lower value spectrum for lower value traffic.
      That would open up all kinds of innovation with cheap data transmission.

    Just wondering, what gives the US the right to regulate frequency use in space? If an Icelandic company wanted to launch something like this, would the US be in the way?

    • @MikeOnSpace
      @MikeOnSpace  3 года назад +5

      Great question! The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) www.itu.int/ regulates frequency allocations and satellite orbits around the world. Nation states create their own agencies (FCC in the US) to coordinate their own national activity with the ITU. Companies like SpaceX file their own coordination requests with the ITU (see spacenews.com/spacex-submits-paperwork-for-30000-more-starlink-satellites/ for an example). Thanks for watching!

    Do you think that this may be a possibility. Within the not yo distant future.

    I have had an eval unit for awhile now. Let us know what they say about sending messages TO their eval kit. In their eval they only allow sending data from the device, which is stored & forwarded via their website. Which is good, and there are definitely use cases for me if that's all that is supported in the eval kit. In their product lit they say that you need to add a fully capable $119 Swarm Tile to allow bi-directional store/forward. While they give you a price for the Swarm Tile, they don't allow you to order it. Please update me with any new info you find. From what I read of their data plan when I bought it, their Data Plan does allow for 2 way Store / Forward. But when asked, they are trying to pair with commercial customers at this time utilizing 100's of units -- and I wasn't offered the oppty to buy / add the Swarm Tile. Again please update us on what you find. I would definitely benefit from 2 way data.

But Ham radio has a lot of short messages software that can be changed to be used in other ways. APRS messages are poison and Something like 30 letters. That is widely used messages used be Hams. Is used on VHF Ham Radio all the time and the software can be adapted easily!

    First off, we can not risk having satellites crashing into each other creating an unoccupiable layer of space ala the Kessler Syndrome. Secondly $100 a month is already more than I'm willing to pay for internet because my only connection is my cell phone and that bill won't just go away if I was to get Starlink. I'm feeling squeezed price wise, $50 a month would get it done. Third, we'll all soon learn that the price in India will be a tiny fraction of what we pay. No, I don't want to subsidize the rest of the world.

    • @MikeOnSpace
      @MikeOnSpace  3 года назад

      Dead on about India - I'm really interested to see what pricing looks like there when they go live. I can't wait to see the new user terminal design - should reduce manufacturing costs. If they can get the terminal cheap enough that they can sell it at a profit, maybe they'll consider cheaper plans.

    Thanks Mike for another excellent update on Starlink!
    As far as commenting on the FCC.
    They are a large government bureaucracy that have a lot of people that seem to want to
    flex their muscles once in a while. Believe me I know, I worked around government Aerospace for 30 years.
    Every morning I get up and wonder what Elon is up to next.
    The acquisition of Swarm sounds like another one of Elon's innovations.
    What a genius!

      Thanks for the note! I agree - I look at what Swarm is doing for low-power IoT devices and I really hope they fit into Elon's grand plan. I really hope they keep the use case supported within the Starlink umbrella!

    I’m quick to respond with a jab at government agencies as being too overbearing, inept, and all too willing to stand in the way of progress, but of course I don’t know the full story. Did Swarm Tech do their due diligence and cross all tees etc? Regardless, I’m still relatively certain that the FCC was simply being unnecessarily stifling in their disapproval of licensing. Much like the FAA with Starship orbital launches atm...

    With this acquisition spacex are squeezing either end of the market, starlink for fast & high (bandwidth) and swarm for slow & low, this means trouble for competitors as the middle ground is slim-pickings

      100% agree! SpaceX is so far ahead here it's difficult to see how anyone will be able to compete.

Big lol..... other countries around the world are launching their own satellites to have the fastest Internet speeds possible, China is already launching 6G satellites, Japan, Korea, India...... they are doing very fast and have the best connectivities in the world.

      @@MikeOnSpace lol..... they will need to launch tousands and tousands of satellites, why didn't they simply put those satellites a little higher to significantly reduce the number of satellites to be launched?!

    Interesting. If Starlink antenna can communicate with these tiny small cube Sat`s and can send/receive information, than all boys who have expensive part of hardware (Starlink antenna) but can`t pay for monthly bill can send messages and receives them with SMS type information in the desert or in the Poles. It`s a joke! 😋 P.S. I don`t know... :) In old days, Elon Mask told about 5$ a month for Starlink users... Is it true? Will it be?

    • @MikeOnSpace
      @MikeOnSpace  3 года назад +2

      I think right now the manufacturing cost for the Starlink user terminals is too high. They lose money on the hardware so they need to make it back on the subscription. Maybe once terminal costs decrease they'll offer cheaper plans. We'll see!

    FCC had concerns about tracking, would be no way to test those concerns without first putting them up. So a first small batch should have been approved for testing.

      @@carholic-sz3qv I didn't say they were the only company using swarm technology. In a broad way starlink is a awarm technology. I said they offer to SpaceX some technologies and patents that they didn't have in house. Plus the staff starlink acquired are respected folks who are excellent people to have. The ability to connect small devices to a satellite network with low power equipment and small antenna can allow widening the uses for starlink. This was much like Tesla buying maxwell technologies. They aren't the only lithium battery research company but Tesla acquired the technology and patents that made the 4680 battery their property. Tesla and starlink also acquired the satalites swarm they have and the bandwidth they are allowed to use. Both are important to starlink.

    • @carholic-sz3qv
      @carholic-sz3qv 3 года назад

      @@kstaxman2 lol..... starlink is never a swarm technology, its just a constellation of satellites much closer to the globe surface, and also swarm technologies have way many other applications that other companies have been developing or are already in use worldwide. Talking battery manufacturers, there is Samsung, LG, CATL, BYD, SKI, Northvolt, Panasonic....... sodium iron batteries are been developed by CATL, and solid state batteries by many other companies.
