Just imagine a Tesla with starlink antenna pre-installed! 🤯
Mine has a glass roof and aluminum body, no place to use the magnets. Maybe suction cups, but what if air leaks into the cups? However, they should be good for stationary temporary use.
@@jimhatch14 teslas have roof rack mounting options that are hidden that can be used to install one securely. Also with glass you might be able to just keep the antenna inside the glass?
The semi.should have.this for sure.

Elon hinted the Cybertruck is going to be a technological powerhouse…..consequently i expect it he may include starlink
Another great video!
As many other RVers I have been waiting for portability to be enabled. Not so interested in
the at motion capability. Just being able to move it to different camp sites is great for me.
Starlink is truly an amazing technology!
I have tested it out on a trip to Death Valley which is 60 miles from my service address and it worked great! Having high speed internet in the middle of the Mojave desert is unreal. I currently have the antenna permanently mounted on the roof of my RV.
The only problem is that I have to lower the antenna every time I move to a different location. May try and come up with some type of servo system to lower it remotely. Or from your video it looks like the system will work with the antenna mounted flat and let the phased array system do the pointing and tracking. Again amazing technology.
It does seem to work fine when flat. The app shows a warning of motors being stuck, but once it makes that determination (a minute or two after booting) things start to work fine. It's probably slightly less optimal than if it were oriented in the right direction, but I haven't noticed an issue.
I'm like you - more excited about just being able to use it from different places. Technology wise the mobility is amazing, but usually I'm the one driving so less useful :)
This is exactly what I was hoping would be possible with StarLink when I purchased it. I intend to use this feature as I build out a couple homesteads in Arizona and Colorado
Nice! I have to ask - are you a builder, or do you just have a lot of homes?
@@MikeOnSpace I have a couple off grid properties (raw land) I will be building out over the next few years. Colorado will probably be a small A-frame cabin on 40 acres. Cochise County AZ will be an earthship style home using hyperadobe. As soon as I finish my Schoolie we will likely move into it and live on site in AZ while we build. It is one of the few places you can legally do that kind of thing, and opt out of building inspections.
This is awesome! Can’t wait to get Starlink service for my sailboat here in French Polynesia.
Yes, totally! This plus the inter-satellite laser links could mean high-speed internet in the middle of the ocean some day!
@@MikeOnSpace Hopefully someday soon 🤞😄
How can it be French ?
That would be amazing! Imagine to be able to FaceTime someone in the middle of the ocean
Wow midle of pacific ocean. Silence, comfort
I want Starlink integrated into the roof of my Cybertruck now 🤣 I already have Starlink on my house and it's 10x better than what it replaced.
Seems like they should make it an option!
Hear me out: Star link permanently mounted on your car, home Wi-Fi router connects to the car in bridge mode.
You leave home, and literally take your home internet with you lol.
We live on the road, traveling across the country in an RV. This is exactly what I've been waiting for!
How is it now?
Very interesting and great idea with the magnets for a temp install with no vehicle fabrication needed! This will be a major game changer if they can pull off the coverage area they promise with without congestion issues.
Our company does a lot of remote work and they will be impressed with the results you have posted. Always knew it was possible but not always in the position to test the theories. Thank you for doing this and sharing!
I work in the oilfields. Really looking forward to seeing if they deliver on mobility or not.
Shows us how impressive this technology is. Definitely disruptive.
It's hard to believe it works so well with the original hardware! Thanks for watching!
Awesome! Thank you for this. I just received my dish down here in Virginia and have begun testing in various locations on my, unfortunately, tree filled property. Wants to keep looking north for satellites.
The motors definitely point it in the optimal direction even though it does appear to work fine when flat. I've seen lots of posts with tall towers (or even mounting on a tree!) to get that clear view. Good luck finding a spot that works for you!
trees r good fo da environment tho bro
Thanks for exploring for us!
Cool Mike! I’ve been waiting for this and just in time for summer RVing. Just need to figure out a quick connect and disconnect system on house and RV.
Always enjoy your information and insite. Keep up the great starlink info! Thanks Bill
Yeah good point - it would be great to have a quick way of pulling off the dish and router. Maybe ordering a second cable and leaving one on the house permanently? I'm probably going to have mine up a bit to make it more portable, but it's hard to keep the waterproofing intact!
Thanks for watching!
That is amazing. This will be perfect with RVs.
This is amazing - while I don't have starlink this popped up and I had to check it out - well done sir
Outstanding. Thanks so much for showing this works.
That is impressive! Good experiment! Thank you for sharing!
I was amazed at how well it worked - so cool! Thanks for watching!
this is so cool! in a year or two I can see this being used in so many ways, people who live out of a vehicle but also work vans and ambulances. starlink is awesome
Yeah, I'm hearing a ton of interest from RVers, "van life", overlanders, etc. It's such an enabler having reliable access to the internet even when mobile. Thanks for watching!
Absolutely brilliant!
Awesome! Elon mentioned this will work on airplanes, which easily go 500mph (tho no underpasses to worry about :) I also believe I heard him say it can be plugged into cigarette lighter plug. Just can't wait to get on the road again 😄
Yeah, I'm still using my inverter setup, but I'll be building a 12V supply shortly. I'm very curious to see if the ones they're sending to Ukraine are "official" DC/DC supplies, or if they're using inverters with the "stock" power supplies.
@@MikeOnSpace The inverter is built in to my Ford Maverick hybrid, so I can just plug into ac plug. Also the dish can be placed in the bed of the truck, with reduced fear of it flying off. Excited 🤩
Oh nice! I'm still using a stand-alone battery and inverter. My "dish" is one of the very first ones so it's not low-power. I'll probably do some work in the future with a rectangle dish which uses much less power than the original. I'd like to ditch the inverter in my setup to save weight and extend battery run-time so I can more easily power with solar.
@@MikeOnSpace I believe SpaceX employees modified the units for Ukraine. I remember seeing some photos of units on skid with wires sticking out with Tesla power walls.
Good job!
I always wanted to use this system for mobile networking and connectivity.
Great for making my HAM station more network able.
Creative !
The satellites are traveling at 7km/s, I think any vehicle achievable speed should be manageable. 👍
There’s a low pressure area on the roof just behind the front windshield due to the change in angle. Placing the dish there (6 inches back from the window edge) will actually put more downforce on the dish the faster you go. Great video! I’m sure space x never saw this coming.
1000 Up likes. Incredible. I sent your awesome video. The way you bolted, everything, THANK YOU. I'm going to dp this on my camper when i return to Panama.
thanks for this review, we like to drivestream so this is super cool
Awesome video!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it
This is so unbelievably impressive! The system has to overcome the added doppler effect by the vehicle moving but also the phased array beam steering has to adopt to unpredictable movement. Credits to the spacex starlink team! And thank you so much for testing!
I can't BELIEVE how well it works! I assumed that sharp turns would be difficult for it to compensate for, but seems to handle it with ease. I was also worried the magnets might interfere with any magnetometer in the unit, but didn't seem to be a problem. Amazing!
My understanding is that doppler shift and vibrational motions are not a factor because the signal is traveling at the speed of light. The speed of a car and vibrational accelerations are insignificant compared with a radio signal.
@@cccaaa9034 not a factor whether it's arrive, but it is factor in de receiver / decoder + phased array antenna.
Elon has pointed out that the sheer clock speed of the phased array means that a dish on a moving vehicle or even airliner will appear to the system to be stationary. Roaming fixes the problem of hopping between base station coverage areas.
@Danny Bokma Interesting.
Former Navy Radioman, you are Brillant, this will be the key for Starlink to beat AT&T, Verizon, etc. and win military contracts.
As somebody who is both a dedicated gamer and interested in doing van life, this is incredibly exciting.
Great video Mike. Would love to have starlink on my RV. It would make working on the road very easy.
Absolutely! I love the idea of being able to get a good reliable connection, ANYWHERE! Makes working on the road much easier :)
Perhaps this has been suggested before: maybe either angle the dish a few degrees forward acting like a spoiler, or add a wind deflector in front of the forward section of the dish would help with that anxiety of the dish flying off due to wind. The relative wind velocity would be much higher than the car speed if you were driving with a headwind.
Thanks a lot… you took real effort show this is working 👍 results are really impressive …
I was definitely worried it would fly off the top of my car, but so far testing has been great :) Thanks for watching!
and the "wows!" just keep on coming.
It is so cool :) Amazing technology! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for doing this experiment. Any thoughts of manufacturing your mounting bracket and how much for requests? What about a fiberglass wind guard and possible glass(radio wave transparent material)panoramic covering further shielding the dish from rain and wind?or keep it in the inside of a vehicle wIth a panoramic glass roof?
Thanks for testing. I want it for stationary roaming.
Good for you
I want to go mobile in the RV around Europe, this could be a game changer. 'Roundabout' and 'out' sound good in a Canadian accent, thanks.
No way! Cant wait to get one now. I have been waiting to pull the trigger for my RV. Im on the road quite a bit for work and internet speeds are never consistant from place to place.
This is extremely cool
Mike, thank you for this report! This will be great to roam out of the way places in Maine for live reports. What are the power requirements for solar operation? Maybe you have that in another report.
I found your off-grid video
Awesome - I love the idea of of using it to get out in the wilderness. I'm working on another video for off-grid that skips the inverter to make the whole thing smaller and more efficient. I'm also stripping down a rectangle dish to take advantage of the lower power requirements. I'm hoping to get the whole kit small enough that I can backpack with it :) Thanks for watching!
This is wonderful! Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it! A lot of things to piece together, but I really enjoyed making this one :)
so im a trucker, and i wanted to get this, in order to have nice internet when i stop...
so trucks have a flat space, behind them which would be ideal for mounting a dish to. However i was wondering if you could do another similar test please. i want you to do this same thing, but mount the dish flat on the back of your car, say where your license plate is, and see if it affects your net net net. please lmk! thanks for this awesome video btw!
Our Starlinked is now mounted on the roof of the Mobil command center. Very useful to get signal everywhere when needed, especially during search and rescue operation!
Hello @MikeOnSpace
How well does this work when surrounded by trees and city driving? Any good advice for waterproofing the disassembled part of the dish? Fyi, if you use a GPS spoof app you do not need to drive to get to your inital service location for setup. :)
Thanks for the teardown and info!
I worked in the RV industry for years and there weren't really any good internet options at the time. I'm now in the process of converting a school bus to live a Nomad lifestyle. Looks like this is the perfect time for me to be doing this! Thanks for the video showing that it works and works well!
Oh yeah, that sounds like a perfect use case! I've thought about renting an RV and doing a series on the channel about travelling across Canada or something. What do you think - interesting enough to watch?
@@MikeOnSpace I would definitely watch that series!
Thank you. I want to use one on my fifth wheel. We like many others leave the northWest during the winter. We travel to AZ and live down there where the snow isn’t.
Impressive. Thanks for sharing.
Brilliant! This is exactly what I wanna do to my touring bike.
I want to tour around the world while live streaming.
The dish is pretty big for a motorcycle but i think it would just about fit.
I also thought these dishes had to move via motors, it seems i was wrong about that.
Outstanding. Mobile anything satellite is a hell of an achievement.
It is truly awesome that this could work worldwide! Thanks for watching!
As an RVer I am very interested in this, I am surprised, is the quality of the connection lower with the dish mounted flat like that and not pointed at a sattilite?
It uses a phased array which means it can move its aim without moving parts, even if the dish isn't aimed directly at the satellite.
Excellent video. Cellular calling (phone mobility) next.
Thanks~
Thanks! Yeah, I'd like to do some more testing on stability, like if it can support a live-stream or VOIP calling like you say. Thanks for watching!
Looking forward to adding it from my cabin to RV roof when traveling....
I own a Hylas 54 sailboat and I can't wait to install a Starlink setup. It would be a game changer for us and we live on the water full time.
Yep, keen as about to order ours in Australia very soon for remote streaming to YT looks promising. Nice job mate!
Yeah, a channel like yours would be really cool to live-stream from ANYWHERE :) Let me know how your setup goes, and thanks for watching!
The obvious conclusion to that is for the new Teslas to have a starlink dish built in.
Or even starlink custom adapter for use on vehicles. It would obviously probably have to be pretty slim and aerodynamic.
But I could also imagine a larger model on a self-leveling hinge. Like a stove in a boat.
I would to love to use a starlink like this if it would ever come. I have had it preordered for about 1 and half years.
You might want to look into that order..
TY for Sharing, My son wants to become a Digital Nomad, What perfect timing for him.
Agreed! That's why I love TucksTruck so much - I'm envious of their travels all over! Starlink makes it so much more possible, knowing you'll have internet wherever you are!
This was super cool to know. Thank you for sharing. :)
Great video, thanks so much for all your efforts. Do you have anymore info, like a link perhaps, on those magnets you used? TIA
I included a link in the description from Amazon (amzn.to/36eHC22 - I get a commission if you purchase using that link). They seem to work very well, and for my use case they bolt on very easily to my home-made aluminum mount.
That satellite above is moving much faster. Not a surprise it works. Active phase array is awesome
It is such a cool technology :) Amazing to see it in residential packaging! Thanks for watching!
Nice work - there was a slight flexing and flutter on the dish, but you could eliminate that by making a simple fairing on the leading edge that diverts the airflow over/around the dish, rather than letting the airflow get underneath and potentially lift it off the roof. A slight flutter (vibration) might not seem like a big deal, but that can have significant impact over time on delicate internal components. Just some thoughts from a aviation electronics guy.
Yeah, that's a great idea. If you've seen my latest video you'll know that it DID end up blowing off in some high winds :) I'm working now on a version using the rectangle dish to make a version that's smaller and uses less power. I'll make sure whatever enclosure I come up with fits more tightly to the vehicle.
I'd be grateful for any feedback and advice as I go - I'm just learning by doing so a voice with experience is much appreciated! Thanks for watching!
Nice!!! Thanks for doing this! )
Thank YOU for the comment, and for watching. It was a lot of fun making this video. I mention it in a later video, but it eventually DID blow off the roof, so I'm working on an even lower-profile mount now :)
@@MikeOnSpace I think you need a front wind deflector thing, that will direct air flow over the top of antenna pushing it down. Like a bended piece of plexiglass.
Hi Mike great video, loved the test. I have been checking my DeBug data for the dish since you released this video hoping it will change to the True status, it hasn't, any take on why? We have our dish set up that it's totally portable to unhook and take it camping as well, hopefully it will work with the roaming still on false status, cheers
That would be brilliant for streaming Internet radio on long journeys. Many Internet radio apps such as TuneIn not only drop out in signal blackspots, but stop resuming after a few data interruptions.
Thanks! My interest is in using StarlinK on my sailboat. So much slower speed ( 7 knots) but a lot of moving around.
You'll also have some obstructions if the dish is mounted on the deck.
@@sjackson99 Yes. I plan to mount starlink on the back end of my davits - should be back and high enough not to be blocked by my main sail, most of the time.
I'm really interested to try on a sailboat - I might have an opportunity this Spring!
@@MikeOnSpace Can you let me know how it goes! Thanks!
Wow! I'm a New Brunswicker now living in Maine. I've had Starlink for just over a year at our cottage, which had only slow ADSL as an only choice. I psend a lot of time in southern Africa (South Africa, Namibia and nearby) travelling in a 4X4, so a mobile Starlink solution would be great. I do have an address and bank account in SA so I think I will order another system there when it is available. I assume the POE cable is a off-the-shelf product?
Dude sounds like you are great traveler for American . lol sorry but that’s just awesome I hope u make vlogs about your travel
Great tip on trying to buy outside the service area! hehe. I have a camper van and am desperate for Starlink to travel and work remotely. Really hoping for the phone, too.
Been waiting for this to add to my storm chasing vehicle! Gonna have to work out something for hail protection, likely a sheet of polycarbonate. Have you tested the upload speeds while mobile?
Oh, very cool use case! I'm working on a rectangle dish version of this (some of my more recent videos) and I'm going to do some testing with a protective covering to see if it interferes with the signal.
Some basic speed tests using the Starlink app show 10-15 Mbps is fairly typical, but I haven't done more extensive testing yet with streaming, etc. to see how often it drops out.
Thanks for watching!
Great information. Love this
Glad you enjoyed it! It was a fun one to make - I love building and testing things :)
Nice Mike, indeed the speeds are amazing!
Hey Ajin! Good to hear from you! I bet you could test it at some higher speeds than my little Honda Fit can manage ;) Going to CanSecWest this year? I may try to get there as well!
@@MikeOnSpace Nothing planned, but if you are hitting west coast, let me know 🙂
I have an off road RV. I really want to use this in remote locations here in Australia. Wow.
Totally! I love that this could totally open up areas of the world for anyone who wants to travel but still needs connectivity. Thanks for watching!
that is so sweet man. im going ahead with my order than!! badass!!... im about 2 hours outside of our nearest zone/path. it hasn't got here yet. so this is to sweet to find out :)
I have just the place to mount on my world-wide sailboat. We don’t move very fast but the boat moves in all axes when the wind pipes up. Hoping!!!
I am curious how much rolling it can handle. If it's far from vertical it might be more limited in what satellites it can use. I'm sure as they add more satellites it'll become less of an issue. And for world-wide sailing, I can't wait to see those laser-links in action, providing coverage far from land!
Do you have anything online about your sailing? I've always been fascinated with people sailing around the world :)
About to get an RV soon for travel nursing hoping to beable to get starlink by the time I'm able to get the RV.
Thanks for your post.
Thanks for taking the time to comment and thanks for watching!
And so it should! the whole point of Sat systems is that they are not geo fenced! Starlink needs to be put on planes and trains if this is what it can do! The thing is does the dish still working in lining them up as it can't move? Also a wind deflector on the front would be good as you can see the dish lifting a bit towards the end of the video.
It’s amazing the ISPs in my area for cost and other reasons failed to provide me and thousands of other potential customers internet services. Hell we can’t even get decent cell phone service and here you are driving down the road with connection! Can’t wait to get my package but being down in Florida finding a wide open service are where you can purchase using and abandoned or existing address is not doable.
Yes on both accounts. I work remote and would love to use it both ways.
This is great information. I'm a musician who will start live streaming my live shows at locations in and around Yosemite NP. I've yet to receive my hardware... Late April or May. The Roaming option is the answer to what I want to do. Happy camper here.
Oh wow, I never thought of live-streaming shows - cool use case! Roaming is going to open up so many cool ideas :) Thanks for watching!
Really thinking about getting this service, remote home or sailing use
It is very impressive how it works. I think sailing would be really interesting. Maybe I'll have a chance to do some testing on a sailboat this summer!
I bet you could add a slight incline to the mount(higher in rear) and it would act like a spoiler and keep it pinned to the roof.😃
Awesome! Could you try running this experiment, but with the starlink dish in the hood of the car instead? Might make for better ability to keep the dish safe
Hi Mike I have the Starlink Gen 2. When I mount onto a moving car will I need to turn the motors in the UTA-212 Dish
I'm planning to downsize and move into a RV or converted schoolbus (Skoolie) this looks like the answer to the internet problem
Definitely going to buy one now!
Increible . Starlink is getting better and better
I'm amazed it worked as well as it did. Truly awesome technology!
@@MikeOnSpace last monday starlink was registred like company in my country Argentina .we will see what is going to happen
Nice! They're slowly rolling out to more and more countries. I'd love to do a road trip down to Argentina - maybe an excuse to try Starlink on the road :)
Rounda-boot, rounda-boot! It's a-boot time! Take off eh ya hozer! Your accent to me (native Californian) sounds like a hint of Scottish. Seriously, great info and video mate, cheers from Florida.
Great video Mike. FWIW I take my dish from home and use it on our local emergency communications van when we are called out to assist our local police or fire department in this small town in SW Washington state.
Nice! I still think it's AMAZING that this works (eventually) everywhere in the world, and requires no local infrastructure. Great fit for emergency comms!
wow. working without the actuator motors and fine tuning!!!! unbelievable how they added those bell and whistles to an already working and fault tolerant antenna !
Great to see its possible and that the future of Starlink is mobile.
Agreed! Very cool technology! Can't wait to try it more. Thanks for watching!
Have you posted this on Starlink reddit page?
I'd suggest you do with a link to this video :D
This is good stuff!
Good point! I normally don't post my videos, but I guess this is some original stuff :) Thanks for the suggestion, and thanks for watching!
Those must be strong magnets
I want to be a truck driver and this would be dope, especially if the form factor shrunk too
This may be part of the changes star link we’re making for Ukraine so the military can use it. Awesome stuff and amazing how quick musk has s able to work.
totally amazing !!!!
I can see a lot of opportunity for a moving mobile application for offshore (commercial boats, private boats, etc). For mobile vehicle applications, I'd venture to say that 4G/5G cell will still be the primary link for most vehicles, especially given that most people's vehicle data needs are sufficiently already met with that infrastructure. But the roaming aspect will be huge. RVs, camping, etc.. the applications are endless for that.
Yeah, that's fair. Unless you're intentionally going off the beaten path, most highways are likely to have cell coverage. But you're right, boating - especially going far offshore - can definitely take advantage of mobility. Especially when the laser links are up to provide coverage farther from ground stations.
Roaming is more interesting to me for actual usage. I can't wait to take it out camping. Mobility is fascinating from a technical perspective though - very cool! Thanks for watching!
@@MikeOnSpace Also, I'm very interested in the aviation applications. High-speed data links could bring a wealth of safety and services to all forms of aviation. And in the future, when the constellation is much more dense, I could see a considerably smaller version for things like backpacking, etc.
This is the future for all of our communications
It will be good to see the results of testing it on a drive through a forested area?
Awesome test! Out of curiosity, do you think the dish would be able to handle the high wind speeds if it was fully assembled?
Yes, my assembled Starlink antenna handles highway speeds when mounted on my Jeep. I keep it in horizontal orientation.
@@garycrum6486 Thank you!
It probably wouldn't work as well for actual mobile usage - every time the car turned the orientation would be wrong. But for only using while stationary it's probably ok. I'd be worried about how it would act in a collision. It would be a lot of lateral force on the post.
