Gotta pre-fissure the bread. Put the flat end of a long knife over the open face part of the sandwich, then press firmy into the top of the loaf all the way down the bread. This will not stop it from being rough, but will make it easier to bite into without hurting your teeth, and will section off easier.
In Philly we don't toast our rolls. It better be a soft Amaroso 🥖 Roll or equal. We don't do no hard bread. And no sesame seeds. That must be a New York thing. ☺️
