I found out (the hard way!) that the more stuff I have, the longer cleaning will take. I have recently started taking everything out of a room, except large, and necessary furniture, and plants. You're supposed to live with the space for 24 hours, then just bring back in what you really need and love. I like the uncluttered look so much, I live with it all week! I also take the chance to give things a good clean. Living without the stuff in my living space helps me to let go of it, too.

When I practiced a more Buddhist lifestyle, I've always had a phrase in my head, "Messy room, messy mind." Over the years it's helped me greatly reduce the amount of unnecessary things and to create that space you mentioned. I love that computer desk idea with the smaller drawers! 😊

    • @thelifewithnate
      @thelifewithnate 9 месяцев назад +4

Interesting and you don't practice said lifestyle anymore? What happened if you don't mind me asking? One my sisters is a practicing Buddhist and she finds that it helps calm her ADHD mind as she goes about her day.

    • @cyberbirb_OW
      @cyberbirb_OW 9 месяцев назад +6

@@thelifewithnate I feel like I did everything to be the "perfect" Buddhist - and that's where I went wrong, haha. Perfection is silly. There's nothing wrong with meditation, it's just that my hardcore approach to it made me lose my sense of self. While I don't have ADHD, I believe routine and a regular meditation practice would greatly help your sister. I hope she finds comfort in it like I did.

The concept of a clean room is one that cannot be overestimated! I find that when my home or surroundings are dirty, it creates a ton of additional unconscious stress for me as I try to go about my day.
Like when I go to my normal day job and the apartment is a mess, all I think about is "dang, I need to clean everything up today!" and I run out of time! I got to implement some of these tips just to breathe more normally. Arigato, Aki!

I have always found the Japanese way of living respect worthy and fascinating. Personally I feel the more one grows spiritually the more one gets drawn towards minimalist lifestyle.
Once you start decluttering your mind and soul you naturally want to declutter your physical environment.....!

Determining the theme of the room is such a helpful idea. I’m definitely going to use that.
I also really like the idea of limiting the number of items to 3 or 5. I’m also going to use this. I was at the store yesterday and they had a really good sale on shoes. There were quite a few in my size that I really liked and I do need new shoes. But I couldn’t figure out how many I needed at the store. I didn’t buy any because I just couldn’t make a decision. Having a pre set number is such a helpful tool.

Thank you for yet another exceptional video. Since I started following your content, I've noticed a positive transformation in my life. While I may not embrace minimalism to the extent you do, I've made a conscious effort to incorporate many of your insightful tips into my daily routine. I've stopped impulsively buying unnecessary things, gotten rid of some unnecessary items, but most importantly, you've awakened motivation in me to clean up. I used to dread cleaning at home, but your videos have changed my attitude towards this task. I no longer see cleaning as an unpleasant duty but as a way to relieve stress and bring order not only to my surroundings but also to my life. Greetings from Slovakia.

To quote the American statesman, Benjamin Franklin," A place for everything and everything in it's place". This is a concept that I try to live by. It is interesting that the less one has and enjoys space, the more one thinks about whether to purchase another item. I often ask myself if I really need it. Nine times out of ten I do not. I am not a minimalist though I follow a lot of their principles and having less for me is an ongoing process since I have accumulated so much over the yrs. People often comment about how peaceful my house and how organized I am and relatively speaking this is true. However, I I am still looking for and finding things all the time that I can give away. Arrigato for all the simplifying tips.

as a tea student myself, I noticed some of these principles creeping into my life, too, the longer I practise. Such as assigning places, minimizing on the essentials, focusing on the beauty of the space and minimizing storage - after all: We do not LIVE in the storage. Life is activity and that means space. And I do find these changes extremely liberating. Still, you gave me some more ideas like the 5 second rule and the number of items. Thank you 🙏

I most appreciated Tip #6, "determine the theme of your room". I realized that having too many items is the result of not having a clear theme for my life. I know what I value and what I love to do, but I keep many options open- so I hang on to many items that I don't value or don't use frequently! This video will help me create a theme based on what I enjoy now, what my "ikigai" is, and let go of items that don't fit this theme. Thank you Aki !

I have been doing well with minimizing so far but I love the idea of a theme so much! I chose the theme “heart and forge” after your advice. I even write it (badly 😅) in caligraphy and hung it on the wall! I chose this because I only have one room to pack everything I am in, so I will now only allow things that are close to my heart and that support my creative work. 🎉

Very good advice on cleaning and putting things away before bed! It's like when I worked in an office, I was more organized in my work because after work I always put my tools in their places and when I came in the morning my work place was clean and tidy, so it was nice to start work, but now I work at home and at the end of the day I get tired, I leave my desk in a mess and clean it in the morning, so my day starts with unpleasant things and I can't focus on work after cleaning and I'm already tired and start thinking about lunch))) And now I see that it's a great idea to clean up right after work. Thank you!

I was into minimilism in the past and i lived in a 10 by 16 shed. Everything had a place and space for use even w crafting. I enjoyed sewing while sitting on the floor.
Then i got in a relationship, moved to another home and had a child. Now i ended up w a family living in a single room w no space, no storage, and too much stuff, toys.
Now im moving into a small cabin w a loftbedroom. Hoping to only add in what we really need and use because its dysfuntional and depressing otherwise. Wish me luck😂

As our life circumstances change so do our living needs. As a single person, we make all the choices but when we get married and have children everything changes. Good luck! As children get older, they can be taught about taking care of their toys and belongings and giving some away to more needy children.

It’s the kind of thing I unconsciously know; “I have too many of this item!”
But we’re so conditioned to want to consume and buy cool new stuff, and we might have a bad day and buy something we already have too many of, just because.
And I know it’s not making me happy! But I do it anyway.
It’s definitely pens/art supplies for me. But looking around my house, I notice also:
    -coffee mugs
    -Blankets
    -Hair ties
    -Random little toys
All of these are the kinds of things I tend to buy when I’m depressed. And it makes me feel better for a second, but then I get it home and the stress sets in! Where is this going to go? Do I even have room for it?!
I’ll try to remember this next time I’m out and I’m in a bad mood!

Less things, and a designated place for what I keep makes for a less stressful daily life.

I have been emptying my house of many things one spot at a time. Kitchen already feels much better and stuff there gets put away Quickly now. The dishes get done quickly and put away quickly also. My bedroom has been cleared of my excessive clothing and I keep hangers backwards until the clothes gets put back cleaned and I can see what I’ve worn. In drawers I use Marie Kondo method and I rotate after worn and it’s easy to know if clothes is damaged or stained when I put it back on. And I now have limited the space allowed for clothes. So i can buy one if I get rid of one or more. I now have to go through top of closet and shoes in my closet so that’s a work in progress. But they are placed. Bathroom is placed and hallway closet is all seperated by type of stuff and I’m now using up stock in there like air sprays and cleaners !!! We buy way too much stuff. I’ll be doing basement in the fall as I’ll be going camping this summer.

"if something feels bothersome people tend not to do it" - yes. We got a battery powered vacuum cleaner as a gift. We've been using it a ton since then. Much more than the "normal" one.
It's easier to get started, easier to clean the dust when it gathers in the container (container is smaller), no cables to fiddle around with when you go around the house. No need to look for a socket to turn it on.
All these small things make it like 2 times more enojable to use.

The idea to determine the theme of the room is the one that I find it the most helpful :)
But all the tips were really helpful! Thank you very much! :)

Wow really loved how you translated the tea ceremony steps and concepts to minimalism, very insteresting. Got a lot of value out of this video 😊 thank you for sharing this with us, I will try to apply a lot of these ideas to my home, thank you 🙏🏼

Thanks. Lately I actually cleaned up my room each section at a time. The closet, I got rid of half of the clothes I almost never wear anymore, and other stuff that took too much space. Then my bedding, then my drawers since those carries the most crap. I still have a bit to go completely clear my room out.
The theme of my room. Well I still like anime and manga and books and figures. I tried to minimize the amount of series I buy and make sure these are the ones I want to keep, like my absolute favorite series.

I am working on simplifying my possessions. My questions to myself are, How does this thing make my life better? And, What difference would it make if I didn't have this thing?

This has cheered me up and inspired me this morning. I'm starting a divorce, and planning to restart my life. Having a mindful purpose for my new home (when I find it!) will help keep the baggage from my old life weighing me down.
