    Every year, at the Australian Open, behind Rodger Federer's coach (earlier Edberg and now Ljubicic), sits an elderly couple.
    There is a story to this couple, and it shows what a good human being Federer is. The couple are Bob and Diana Carter, the parents of his first international coach, the Australian Peter Carter.
    Federer was just nine when Carter took him under his wing.
    In 2002, in a terrible tragedy, Carter died in a car accident while on a vacation with his wife. He was only 37 years of age. The story goes that Federer (then 21) was so affected by his coach's death, he ran through the streets of Toronto (where he was playing that day), bawling his heart out.
    Carter had recognised Federer's genius at a young age, and was determined to make him an all-time great. He was not Federer's first coach, but the one who took him from relative obscurity in Basel in Switzerland to the threshold of international greatness.
    Every year since 2005, Federer's team sends an all-expenses paid itinerary to the Adelaide-based couple - first-class air tickets, bookings in the same hotel as Federer, food, winner's parties and even commiseration parties in Melbourne.
    And they sit in Federer's box at the Rod Laver Arena, supporting him as if he were their son. They see their son Peter in him. And Federer never forgets the Carter family's role in his life and career.
    Federer, now 34, may or may not win his 18th Grand Slam. But he is one of the greatest humans to have set foot on a tennis court.
    Remember the people and the things that have made an impact in your life .....this The LEGEND FED

      I'm Swiss. RF has of course a lot of fans in Switzerland but also suprisingly a lot of people do not like him at all, because they think he's greedy for money, is way too old to continue on the ATP tour. Also the Swiss media has bashed him the last couple of years extensively. RF also mentioned in the Swiss media that he's kind of relieved being able to prove himself and the "experts" that he's still on top of the game with his 18th title.

    14:21: The moment where Federer jumps like this it is his 1st ever Grand Slam victory. Goosebumps every time I watch it. Nothing but pure happiness!!

    • @marilynpeeples4960
      @marilynpeeples4960 6 лет назад

      Rohith Desikan It ABSOLUTELY thrills my heart to see Roger Federer, an obviously talented, hard working tennis player feel SO TOTALLY FREE to exhibit SUCH feelings of joy & SUCH heartfelt emotion, (& is neither “afraid” NOR “ashamed” to shed tears of happiness) because he’ is SO VERY happy when he wins a particular match ! AND he does so with EACH & EVERY win !! His Expressions of gratitude & appreciation for his fans, clearly displays an attitude of DEEP humility !
      For 2 reasons :
      1) Because I have watched every match (which can be found on You Tube) in which Roger Federer was a participant
      (although, granted, some of the videos I’ve watched were, in actuality, only “highlights” of a match & NOT the entire match),
      AND ALSO -
      2) because I, too became “well known” for consistently (& almost exclusively) hitting “baseline” volleys
      (FYI : in 1964, when I was ranked 4th in the state of Georgia & was only just a sophomore in High School,
      Because of these 2 reasons, I have found myself ABSOLUTELY AMAZED that, it has been ACTUALLY only on the EXTREMELY rare occasion, that Roger’s “return” ever been called “ out” - because his return landed BEHIND his opponent’s baseline !!!
      Readily Available to ANY & ALL tennis fans, are a whole “plethora” of the various tennis player’s “statistics”
      (i.e., baseline volleys, drop shots, backhand & forehand passing shots, tweeners” etc.) !
      I’m appreciative that EACH individual tennis player’s “statistics” are being continuously recorded, so that they, then, can be reported via all of the many forms of news media, & this reporting is available QUITE soon after the various matches end.
      BUT, my question is :
      “Are any of you aware if there has ever been someone who has kept a record, (then “reported” it) of the number of times when Roger’s return hit been called “out” because it hit behind the baseline ?

  • @tzovlask
    @tzovlask 7 лет назад +79

    just incredible! what I love about these two is that they are polar opposites as players. Rafa is a top spinning baseline bully who is a vicious hustler who always needs to be beaten, Federer is the technician, very precise and calculated, a pro's pro, always in control, focussed, suave and smooth making everything look effortless.
    ...and the greatest thing about these guys most, is their humility, professionalism and respect for the game and its players.

    • @chaosmos24
      @chaosmos24 7 лет назад +7

      I feel like their contrasting styles bring out the best in each other because Federer has to go for risky, tough shots in order to get it past Nadal, and Nadal has to work overtime to get to those shots.

    • @tzovlask

      Roshan Sreedhar yeah true. and whats funny is that each had an answer to the other as far as matchups win/loss was concerned. It was Djokovic over Nadal, Nadal over Federer, and Federer over Djokovic...(probable not the case anymore)

    • @roshansreedhar4727
      @roshansreedhar4727 7 лет назад +5

      KoS Although I love nothing more than seeing Djokovic beating Nadal, I disagree with Djokovic and Nadal. In theory, yes Nole has all the answers to Rafa's game. But in reality, they have been evenly matched for most of their rivalry, last couple years Djokovic has gained the upper hand due to Nadal's struggles with injury. It's probably the greatest rivalry of all time because you never know who is going to win; they're evenly matched but have contrasting; but all you know is that it's going to be an epic.

    I was so happy Federer won! It's very impressive to have 18 GS titles, and the most recent coming at age 35, and after months off for rehab. Remember, it was just a couple years ago that RF was still getting to GS finals and semi finals but couldn't quite pull it off. Nadal is great, there's no doubt, and his toughness is the biggest weapon the game has ever seen. The thing is though, Nadal is left handed and really picks in Rogers backhand in cross court ralleys, plus Nadal got in Federers head years ago and that cost Roger in the head-to-head meetings. Sometimes Rafa was just too tough that day, but there have been times (such as Wimbledon and French Open) where RF had opportunities in the 5th set and he would just start to crumble a little bit. He'd start missing forehands, he couldn't convert many game points, and he would fall short. That's why I'm glad Roger got the win!! Roger was down in the fifth considerably 1-3, and he had moments where I thought he'd fail again, but he didn't! I love it!

Thanks to all the people who posted videos of highlights, the entire Rafa/Roger finals, the speeches, etc. Otherwise, those of us in the U.S. who are fans of superb tennis and especially of Roger Federer would never have been able to see this most elegant of athletes in an epic win.

    It's true that Murray and Nole are the best tennis players currently. However, You know what; the truth is that everyone is looking forward seeing them retiring from tennis, but the day Roger or Rafa retire would be a very sad one for tennis and the fans. This what it is!

    Love the respect Roger and Nadal have
    for each other .... Both are the greatest players of tennis ever.....When the final was on....to me whoever won that would be awesome...Because a match between Roger and Nadal is always a treat to watch and feast for the eyes for sure... Both came back from injuries and yet played great tennis...Forza Tennis....Rafa chasing every ball and Federer's incredible backhands are awesome.

    the difference between federer-nadal and murray djokovic is the x-factor. either you have it or you don't. federer and nadal are known for their signature style of contrasting but both exceptional style of play. and they established quite a rivalry that we can say as legitimate because that rivalry endured for years, not just one or a couple of years. and the class of both players are incomparable. doesn't mean murray and djokovic don't have class, but federer and nadal are just way too recognizable, different and favored by the masses (they got legions of fans). Federer for example, even if he's not number one, but when he plays it's as if the fans expect him to act like one. and in this tournament, Federer did act like no one could beat him as he wins the slam.

    Well the knee injury was a blessing in the sky for Federer. He was able to take time off and reflect and rest. Came back at his age and was rejuvenated. Probably needed it since he played a lot of tennis. Some may look at it as a set back while yet it was a blessing...Why?...Djokovic gets knocked out, Murray as well, and Federer steam rolls like a monster into the finals and gets his 18th title...how sweet is that?!

      But it's absurd that aged 35 after 6 months out, losing a final to in-form and 5 years younger Nadal he could have been labelled a choker. Most people were expecting him to lose. Would it have been better if he had lost the semi than the final? He was surprised and pleased to have got so far in the tournament, even if he lost could have taken heart as making progress towards, say, a final shot at Wimbledon, unless completely thrashed. Of course losing would have reinforced his h2h deficit v Nadal, but that has been skewed and misleading since Nadal has often not turned up when form and surface haven't suited him. They haven't met on grass for over 8 1/2 years and only once from mid 2014-2016 with Federer better than Nadal, who went missing in his weaker (and Federer's stronger) half of 2012 and 2014

    I know I'll be coming back to this video when both of their careers end. It was such a remarkable match and as a Fed fan, it really couldn't have ended better. To beat your greatest rival for the first time in 10 years is incredible. But to beat Nadal in the manner in which he did was just something else. To be a break down in the fifth and win five games on the trot against Nadal, who would have thought? His backhand was insane, particularly in the fifth and Clutcherer was definitely in full display at the end, where he saved breakpoints and served it out for the sweet 18. Nobody could have scripted it any better.
