- This is an instructional review of how to add landscape edging to your landscaping. In this video i used two layers of retaining wall block to define my edge and to hold in the wood chips for the landscaping.
I created this video with the RUclips Video Editor ( / editor )

Thanks for posting. For others looking to do if you buy wall block that is double sided you alternate direction so you aren’t left with all those gaps between stones.
Thanks for commenting. Thats a great idea!
Seems like perhaps you should have added a thin (usually 2") capstone as these blocks are not intended to be a top course (as evidenced by the exposed triangular gaps). Nonetheless, you did a good job. Lastly, since it's hard to adjust tamped base to level a block, I recommend a thin (~1") layer of paver sand on top of the the tamped base to do the fine tune leveling. You don't tamp the sand of course! Just lay the block into the sand, which you make a little high initially, then tap down with a dead blow hammer until level, and repeat... Happy landscaping!

That's a unique way of defining an edge. Nice Video!
lol. thanks.
but really ,you are verry enthusiastic and pationate about wanting to help people do things the right way VERRY UNSELFISH!.
Thanks for the video. I am working on my back yard right now and spent 3 days putting in a raised garden. It would have been faster if I didn't have to level out the ground which is all North Carolina clay and all on a slope. I would like to do something similar to what you did here once my back stops aching. LOL
Your so refreshing and honest. Compared to other's that lost there way in you tube land. Also thank you letting me see how to's through your eyes. You say it's windy almost all the time. Love it, what part of the world are you in? THANK YOU. From:California
Skylark Amaris near chicago. The windy city. Lol
Skylark Amaris it was a really windy weekend though. Thanks for your comment.
I picked up a couple of ideas from the video, thanks! BTW, it's a "Tamper" not a "Stamper". ;)
*ATTENTION: Have You Always Wanted to Redesign Your Home's Landscape But Don't Know Where to Start? Then This Is The Most Important Letter You'll Ever Read..*
You might try a product used by commercial agriculture for weed mat. It's called "Nursery Mat" the name I know it by. It's woven heavy duty UV resistant plastic that is cross hatch woven, and is used in strawberry fields to keep weeds out. The nurseries in SoCal use it as ground cover. Nursery I go to has had lots of it in direct sun for over 10 years ans still in good shape. I get mine @ Farm Tek, but any agriculture supply should have it. It holds up very well.
I like what I saw and have read all the comments made. The colour blocks look great but a little concrete in front for the mower would be good.
did you use any kind of brick cement to keep the bricks from shifting?
I don't know if you are in Kansas? But you sure are in some very windy lands. Have you tried putting on a fake fur cap for your microphone? You know, if you watch the news and it's windy, they have one of these on. Just an idea, especially if you're going to do more videos?
Thank you, I am learning so much, wishing you blessings always, Annie
I'm wondering if the lawn so close to the retaining wall block now needs trimming after a few years of grass growing in front of the bricks?
The grass is trimmed with a gas weed trimmer. No weed issues in the landscaping. Just string winds blowing the wood chips out is only problem
how is it mowing that tight inside radius?
Paver Base? I do not know of it in Australia. Is it not just Mortar Mix? Seems a good way to use! Weed Mat is certainly useful but I start to hate it, weeding is more difficult but You are fine with it and do a perfect job. Wind, You can keep it Mate. I have 30o now and NOOO Wind! Day or night, You sure would like that but I am a bid selfish with it! Merry X-mas! Richard
Great video! I learned all about "wind."
Thanks for posting this video. Very helpful.
Nice garden area
*Good job!*
Thank you
Tim - My problem is the people who flipped my house, didn't use tarp underneath the mulch, so I have a bunch of weeds/grass that grow through! Do you have any recommendations on laying digging up old mulch, laying tarp, and laying new mulch?
My best suggestion would be to use a leaf rake to remove the old mulch and lay down the landscape cloth. If you dont you will be weeding constantly. Also get the good cloth too. I have used cheap stuff before and weeds still grow through. When I spent a few more bucks a roll for the good thick cloth it worked better. Also in the spring spread preen in your landscape. It prevents weeds before they grow. Hope this helps. Good luck!
Landscape fabric is the worst idea for planter beds. Quit using trash in the landscape. Most of my clients who cannot keep up with their weeds had landscape fabric put down. Weeds grow where other plants will not, and eventually they will find a way through your fabric, since most weeds seed from above, when you go to dig them out you puncture the fabric and make your job even more difficult. It won't be long before you pull a weed and you are also pulling up the fabric. Instead of creating an environment where only weeds will grow, try creating an environment where the plants you love will thrive. Good soil health requires that organic material from wood debris, leaves, ect can interact with the topsoils. By placing fabric down between the layers you are creating unhealthy soils. Don't rely on Big box store products to tell you what is best for your yard. Look at nature. Landscape fabric has its uses, but using it as a weed barrier in your beds is NOT one.
+tblair2594 i bought weed barrier, 20 year, hoping I'm done for the rest of my life!! age 57 8-)
+Sean Ford Sean, I totally agree! Well said.
where did u bought those bloacks from? it is in white color right?
thank you. I couldn't do much about the background noise, but thanks for watching!
You do a really good job of both the work and presenting (considering the conditions and the equipment available). Please have a camera with auto-stabilization and a microphone with a windscreen in future videos! It makes a huge, massive difference.
Adding recycled newspaper is good under the fabric!
Thanks for the idea. Maybe next time
really nice. I will be trying this
awww can you help me out im trying around for work in landscaping 😢
I like this how long it take you
Good job!!
Great vid! So how is it 3 years later? I'm think it needs cement to stay in place?
Chi Anosike. blocks are good. but i want to replace wood chips with rock. the wind blows the wood chips in the yard.
I'm gonna attempt! So just curious, I've seen so many videos. Can you tell me exact the rocks you use to prevent shifting. All other videos I'm seeing cement. Besides the wood chips would you have done anything different?
In Jesus Name I Play they make a mulch-loc product from Garden safe. Also for use with gravel, sand, dirt rock.
Chi Anosike use a inch minus, gravel base(3/4in)
How do you find the lowest spot. Without shooting it in? I guess the driveway would be the lowest in my case?
What’s the blocks name you used I m planning to do mine can you name
I got them from menards. They are landscape blocks. Retaining wall blocks
I enjoyed your precision!
Thanks. Hope it helped
+In Jesus Name I Play I like your youtube name!
_Its been several years now since your sharp installation. I would be interested to know if the River Birch's "radially outbound" roots either turned back toward tree's root flare when encountering wall._ Ran along side of blocks, lifted them, or dived down underneath to spread out and take advantage of where expansive front yards soil is on other side. I would think with black fabric covering root system, tree or bushes would not be receiving any of that beneficial organic matter produced from Bark/Wood chips layered above them. Normally for sidewalks, roots do not grow through mechanically compacted soil and aggregate base. But just above it, right below concretes underside, where conditions are moist and needed oxygen exchange is present. Then they inevitably begin hydraulically lifting slab, as maturing tree adds girth to its roots. Science, crazy huh?
CONCERTMANchicago roots are fine. no issues with the block. the only problem is I live near the windy city and my wood chips have blown out. I need to replace it with rock
I just spent the better part of three days sifting out rocks from a neglected flower bed from a previous home owner. I will NEVER put rocks into a flower bed. I suppose it would be alright if the bed is tended to. But in this case the weed barrier was severely deteriorated and grass and weeds had taken over the bed.
@@EagleKeeper86 Rock are great use commercial grade weed block. Also you have to do maintenance at least every two weeks. Stuff will fall on top of the rocks and grow.
Nice job but you should have showed us how you did it. Instead of explaining it and us listening to the wind.
could u have picked a windier day?
2 screwdrivers and a chalk line. not bad.
I am currently working on this plan for my yard. How deep did you go for your trench??? I have edged and I thi k I went too deep.
About 4 inches deep to account for 2 inches of rock underlayment. And 2 inches for the block
How deep is your trench?
About 4 inches. 2 inches for paver gravel layer and i out my first layer of click 2 inches lower. But you can plan it however you want. Block even with ground or lower.
thanks I was good Ideas and nice job.
Very nice.

Very interesting....
Tamp.... Stamp is for sending letters
SO for a video of how to add edging you didnt video putting the edging down??
He used retaining wall blocks AS the edging
good movie thank you , slightly difficult to listen with background noises , but of course it is not a movie that you can do again .... Thank you
cool video thank you
"would you like to stabilize and improve your video?
I don't think you should have clicked yes lol
I am given to understand that this company is closed down. Is that right?
I MEANT PASSIONATE ,THAT IS HOW YOU SPELL IT AM I CORRECT? I COULD LOOK IT UP BUT ILL JUST LET IT GO I FEEL CONFIDENT ENOUGH FOR ITS NOT A CANDIDATE FOR CAPITAL PUNISHMENT EH!?
Wish you did a little demo not just show what tools you used
Those boxwood hedges can use a trim
It's called a spade shovel, and not a stamper lol , it's a tamp
Sure is 👍😆
It definitely was windy!
For me, actually showing you doing the work would've kept my interest, stopped watching after 3 minutes. Beautiful though.
note: Video when it's not soooo windy!!
You won't like that river birch tree when it matures. They shed little branches all summer long. They shed ugly yellow leafs starting in August all until end of Fall. In the Spring they shed huge long seed pods. The tree's root system is notoriously shallow and will get in any garden nearby and can make it hard for grass to grow over the shallow roots. The only reason you want a river birch is if you need a fast-growing tree to provide badly needed shade or privacy, but their are too many drawbacks. Your neighbors will get annoyed by the branches blowing in their yard. My neighbor's 2 river birches in the front yard have penetrated their sewer pipes leading to the street sewer and they had to have large sections of 8 inch diameter pipe replaced and a clean-out plug sticking up above ground in their front yard. Just saying.
Thanks but i love my river birch! I dont have sewer pipes nearby, i needed a quick growing shade tree, and its a great spot to soak up the rain that drains in between our houses. Any tree is going to drop leaves in fall. Also mine doesnt drop any pods. Thanks for your suggestions and anyone planting trees should make sure their tree will be a good fit for where they want to plant it! Thanks for your comment
nice video but the light color edging doesn't look very good.
Can’t hear you over the wind
Tamper. not Stamper.
U dont use cement its called landscape glue
Did u pick up the blocks in you struck?
Sure did
is this yanira
Very informative, but the camera shake wants me to throw up... just horrendous!
Very irritating ah ah ah um ah um ah ah
Um. Well. Uh. Uh. .... Sorry
M!0 kk lol
I can't watch this video from the headache its giving me, too much movement.
Im sorry the video is not the greatest, but it can be helpful.
c'mon!!!!
That is not how you use those blocks - the Vs are weed heaven.
Actually it works just fine. 7 years later and no weeds. The landscape cloth barrier does the trick .
Stopped watching from all the damn shacking!!
Stamper..... lmao
M!0 kk lol
