    Simple pathology -
    1. The meningococcal bacteria invades the blood-brain barrier.
    2. The immune system overreacts from this infiltration and the meninges is compromised by swelling, usually by the WBCs (immune cells). The CSF can be compromised as well if bacteria spreads there.
    3. If not treated in time, excessive bacterial accumulation can cause hemolytic actions that can be systemic to the body as well as the brain, which can lead to -
    a. irreversible brain damage
    b. septicemia leading to TSS (multi-organ failure), which can lead to death
    c. If you survive and escape death from a meningococcal and still delay treatment, necroses and ulcerations can happen in other parts of the body - usually the limbs, causing gangrene and resultant required amputations related to the permanent tissue damage

    I had bacterial meningitis as an infant. I did die, but they were able to resuscitate me. I did have issues growing up. Almost completely dead in my left ear, had multiple surgeries to regain my hearing. The said I wouldn’t grow or thrive ever. But I did grow a little, Lol. I’m only 5ft! I was also told I wouldn’t have children and I have two now at 32 years old. I am also perfectly normal aside from my lovely mental illnesses. I beat the odds that doctors stacked against me. 🙌🏼

    What about infections caused by E.coli among newborns?it's more common than S.pneumoniae in that age group, so it should be mentioned imo

    • @Jaydos1
      @Jaydos1 2 года назад

      I thought the same, I don't think S. pneumoniae shouldn't be in that age group, it should be replaced with E. coli

    I have a question, if anyone please answers I'll be grateful.
    When explaining the antibiotics in confirmed strep pnemonae infection... First line is... Inj. Ceftriaxone.. Inj vancomycin and steroids...
    As second line, the slide mentioned.. Inj meropenem or inj moxifloxin... With steroids...
    My question is.. In the second like.. Are we to give inj Vancomycin along with meronem or moxifloxin... Or is there to be no vancomycin with these?
