You’re absolutely right about alterations being horrible to do. I did alterations for the public for years and I loved it until recently. People have changed so much , every year they get worse. There is no pleasing some people anymore, and they are beyond rude. I closed my business last year because of it and I’m not the least bit sorry.

I'm so sad to hear that. You're right, people have changed. I enjoyed this particular one but even an upcycle can be frustrating. And the pile up of those is overwhelming!

Yes alterations are hard sometimes. As soon as someone finds out you sew they think they have a hook up for alteration projects. It’s great that you were able to help.

I know what you mean. It's hard to say no sometimes when the person is so nice. Do you know, I had a person see my sewing machine through the front window (with the stained glass, behind me) and come to my door and ask to hem her husband's pants! She was persistent, she said it was for a wedding. Kind of played the guilt card. But I smiled and said "no, I don't do that. I only sew for myself." She went away sad but I had to admire her moxy!

Learned years ago--if it’s family: I instruct them on how to take out the old zipper, find the replacement buttons, unpick the hem, etc. before the project comes to my house. (A lot of projects never arrive!). If it’s friends or acquaintances, I offer the resources of my sewing room and some of my time for guidance so they can do it themselves. (I’ve had zero people take that offer 😂). I also know the contract numbers for one alteration shop and a couple of good dry cleaners (for hems) in town to refer when I don’t have the time or skill for the alterations required. I sweetly explain that I quilt/sew for hobby relaxation and currently have plenty of projects in my lineup.

I always use Wawak for zipper supplies. Just replaced zips in a Carheart coveralls and have all sorts of zipper kits to replace zip parts. I love doing alterations, but after doing them for years, I now have only family and very close friends that I say yes to.

I’m sure the alteration was appreciated. I knew it was cold where you live when I saw the top you were wearing. Yes we had about 4 inches of snow here in Virginia. I live just above the North Carolina line on east coast. What I like is we get a snow but it doesn’t last several days like it does farther up north. Those who enjoy snow can have couple days to play in it and then it’s gone. Bad thing around here people not use to driving in snow and we all drive like bunch of complete idiots in it. Also are weather can change so much in a 24 hour period. We have a saying “ If you don’t like the weather just stick around for 5 minutes.”

We got 3-5 inches in Panama City. There is still snow on the ground on Saturday after the snow on Tuesday, mounds of snow on the major streets, and the sad remains of snowmen everywhere. We have a cold front coming in that is expected to warm us up. Yes, that’s what the meteorologists are saying.

    • @TodayinJensSewingRoom

I did alterations professionally for years! My shop is also closed, unless it’s a granddaughter! I’m so glad to be sewing for myself once again! I worked for bridal salons, from home, and took in alterations “off the street” as well. There’s not much I haven’t worked on, but as I said, if it’s not for me, I’m done.
    Stay warm!

Good job as I know what it is like to change a metal zipper on a heavy winter coat. Keep warm as where I live in MN we have no snow and the temperature has been below zero for over a week. WHAT! 8" of snow in LA? Absolutely bonkers crazy. Talk about a polar vortex. Did the thing come from the North Pole or what? I'm also ready for it to get warm again. I will happily take 100º in the summer in exchange for 30º in the winter. And we have not been together in far too long. Let's remedy that, shall we? I miss you! xoxoxox

You could certainly see us coming! Those were fun little cars, most were a manual transmission with a stick on the floor. Much easier when it came to getting around in the snow! I had forgotten this - but my orange Pinto didn't come until later. I was still driving my little 1970 black Pinto in that blizzard. The orange one had an actual trunk rather than the hatchback. I guess it's ok I forgot since it was almost 50 years ago! Good grief. That's half a century. Yikes I am old!

Jen, I dislike making alterations on my own clothes! I was going through a box of sewing supplies I boxed up in 2015, after my mother died. I found a size 14 Simplicity 7850 dress (1968), Simplicity 8588 size 12 dress (1969), the pattern envelope and instructions only for Simplicity 7293 size 14 dress (1967), Simplicity 8411 Size 16 vest, pant and skirt, (1969), McCall's 3713 dress size 12, (1973, a Sample Simplicity Misses butcher apron (1975), and finally a McCall's 6226 set of vests ( 1978) sizes 8-10-12. If you would like any or all of these patterns, I will be happy to mail them to you! I so enjoy your videos.
