It's amazing in the north west. We are just finished editing a video covering one of the Pendle witch graves iverbin Gisburn, just outside of Pendle. Love Pendle and will be doing more their this year.
That abbey looks beautiful. It was obviously massive and very prestigious in its day. What did it feel like to wonder the ground? On a trip.my sister and I took to my nieces wedding we stopped over at a cottage which was on the grounds of an abbey. Although the building was only a couple of centuries old the building was still being kept for another purpose and entry was forbidden to women. But we sat in the garden and I felt like I was in Heaven. There was a peace which was so beautiful and I felt like there were a group of Angels covering and protecting the place. I could almost hear the Gregorian chants echoing through the ethereal otherworldly realm. If I ever got the chance I would gladly go and spend more time there to cut myself off and soak in the places divine grace.
New subscriber. There is one detail, which is little known, is that they were Drawn, Hung, and Quartered. The drawing was being dragged behind a cart, known as: ''The cart's arse.'' to the gallows, then hung, and quartered, very often attack and abused by the crowds of onlookers. I do a lot of walks myself, but was told by a friend about your site. Very interesting little docs. Cheers.
Very interesting, and many thanks for letting us know. The one thing we love about this little community of ours is the information people know and are willing to share with us ☺️
It crazy just what a cruel species we are, especially when it comes to inflicting pain on other people. The torture methods used back in the day, was absolutely sickening.
Have you anymore information on this as i would love to hear it. Me and a few friends have been very invested in Whalley Abbey for quite sometime and have spent hours research and seeing the grounds, would love to know more, This video was really insightful.
Hi Rachel, this is a good source of info on the story - www.documentingdissent.org.uk/john-paslew/ and i think this is similar but a good read - supremacyandsurvival.blogspot.com/2016/03/the-last-abbot-of-whalley-abbey-john.html There are a few others but those are the two I used when looking into the story. It is something we might come back to in the near future but we have loads of other stories planned this year, some similiar to this and a couple more that do involve the village of Whalley and Whalley Abbey too.
Been here when I was I kid. They only did that with William Wallace. His head on a spike on London bridge. His limbs took to the 4 corners of England. This wasn't normal practice. Great video 👍
I am a descendant of his brother Thomas and the John Paslew story is well known in my family. You pronounce Paslew in a different way though but not sure which one of us is correct! Pas (rhyme with Das) loo and the name originates from the French - well that’s what we have always understood! Interesting video btw 😊
Really! It's cool to know people who watch these videos are local ☺️ Also, if you or others know more about any of these stories, please share as we are always wanting to learn more.

A lovely place folks- yes Henry Tudor was a despot, a tyrant - mmmm who does that remind me of?🤔 Anyway another good one , and Vickie, don't be embarassed about your limp please- you manage it so well and you dont let it stop you, so be proud - I've got one leg shorter than the other- didn't know until a rheumatologist pointed it out! It wasnt a great difference but enough for him to refer me for orthotic shoes- couldnt cope with the bloody things, after all had gone through life without being aware of it ! Does explain though why I walk like a sailor on leave! 😂
You made me smile reading this... Thanks Carol your a tonic. Yes 1 leg slightly longer than the other but most people do they say, but as I've always limped all my life,my body automatically does it now along with my head, so unless I'm really thinking about it when I walk, the limp will always be there. I know it's silly but you cannot help feeling the way you do about yourself. But thank you Sailor Carol. 😊😊😊❤❤❤
long time since i been to Whalley Chris. They all claimed to be religious yet when you look at the punishments they were demonic. Following on from that you may be interested in Mark Windows film...the Smithfield Martyrs ..not on yt...you have to buy it but its only about a fiver and it helps indipendent content creators like us
As soon as the video was put up, I instantly thought of William Wallace. I'm writing this comment and you bring the subject up Chris. The history of England is written in blood, that's make the actions of Saudi Arabia seem tame
I couldn't remember his name in the movie Braveheart as it's years ago since I watched it. But yes, our history is horrific and me and Vickie mentioned this last weekend in Whalley. How can people inflict such pain and torture on each other, we just can't fathom it 🤷
Was Abbot John Paslew loyal to his Catholic faith, or was his dissent based on self-interest? whilst many in the Catholic Church reveres him as a martyr, historians are more inclined to see him in a less favourable light. One must note that in late Tudor times Whalley Abbey enjoyed relative prosperity and spent an extravagant two-thirds of its annual income on purchasing various foods and drink. Paslew himself was also responsible for the commissioning of a separate mansion, east of the great cloister. He also reconstructed his own lodgings and added a Lady Chapel. Such behaviour hardly aligns with what one would assume a Catholic abbot would believe when one looks to the Bible: (Luke 12:15 - And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.), leading to some historians claiming that Paslew’s dishonest behaviour means that despite his position as a martyr to the Catholic faith, the ability to deem him admirable is limited
I also read that on the Documenting Dissent website. A very good article I'll link to for others to read ;-) www.documentingdissent.org.uk/john-paslew/
John Paslew was not drawn and Quartered. He was Not brought back to Whalley . These kind of recordings are detrimental to the real story. Research more there is a letter to Thomas Cromwell. The pronunciation of Paslew is not Parslew. Wiswell is Wizzel. The gravestone is not Paslew. When removed the earth underneath was undisturbed. Dont let facts get in the way of a good story eh ?
