  • Grab whatever camera you have and prepare to have some fun! Light painting is the process of leveraging any light source during a long exposure. I will take you through the process using my Nikon D3400 and basic supplies. Regardless of your camera (Nikon, Canon, Sony, Panasonic, etc.), you can pull this off as well!:)

    Creativity!!👊👊 Will never be a photographer for a major channel, and that's not why I bought my camera😊, it was to capture cool memories, shoot awesome experiences, and have fun! But every lesson with light, shutter speed, settings... it makes you think about what you want to capture and how can you do it. You have and are helping so many! 👊👏

    Gorgeous light painting photos! I like that your choice of framing at location contributed to the results, especially with your friend at the park bench and at the bridge. As you mentioned, the ambient light shining through trees from the background makes great shots.
    This video is like a creative boost for me. Not gonna lie, I get distracting by new gears a lot, forget that is not gears that make great photos, is your creativity first!
    I would love to see videos like these more. Maybe some experiment shots also interesting as well. Thank you RealWorld. Keep up the good work!👍😃

      Thanks for the post/feedback and good to see you on various threads!:) John asked - what are we doing here?:) I was not certain how the images would turn out, but I was pleasantly surprised:). You are correct ... the gear is of little concern when you get to a certain threshold. The foundation to any good/unique/memorable image is the photographer's ability to use the equipment and compose the shot (regardless of the equipment (for the most part:)). Glad to help inspire your creativity ... get out, capture some memories, and have fun!:)

I purchased a D850 and two progade lenses, the 14- 24G-ED and the 70-200E FL ED. I did not need to spend that kind of money however. The Nikon d750 or Z6 could have saved a lot of money. This channel is better than the rest, Northrup's are only about expensive gear and promoting their book, Jared Polin is also about expensive gear and recently he developed a fetish with mirroless cameras and became a cocky POS, Kai W is funny but you don't get much it's only to waste some time. But you have opened my eyes to new possibilities, I thought that in order to create great pictures I have to buy expensive gear that I couldn't afford, I love photography but I have an average income just like every hard working American so I'm not rich, I have bills to pay and a family to feed first, I can't afford a $6k body and $4k lens hell my car doesn't even worth that much lol. I have Nikon D3300 and after watching your videos I brought it up, blew the dust and start shooting again with the kit lens and I love it. I created great photos. THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS YOU FOR THAT. 😊
    Please keep teaching us you're doing a wonderful job, you're right I don't need expensive gear to produce great photos like the other channels are promoting.

    • @RealWorld
      @RealWorld  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks for the post/feedback!:) Many feel great pictures are a result of great gear - wrong:). Great pictures are a result of a photographer's ability to compose the scene and leverage existing/basic gear. Manufacturers are about big profits and continue to market their gear as - must have. They want consumers to believe they can take better pictures with newer gear ... newer gear has move features, larger this that and the other. Photographer's were taking great shots many years ago - long before digital:). Entry level cameras over the last few years from Nikon, Canon, Panasonic, and Sony are SOLID ... they are capable of taking GREAT shots similar high end mirrorless bodies. I have used both:). Nonetheless, grab you gear, let your creativity soar, capture some memories, and have fun!:)

      @@RealWorld you're absolutely right sir! I just realized that, and unfortunately other RUclips reviewers apparently are paid by these brands to fool us that inorder to get great pictures we need to upgrade, you're the only professional photographer that is making videos and showing us how to use our low-end/entry-level cameras to produce great photos :) I'm not a professional sports photographer nor working for national geographic to need these cameras and lens and I'm sure they have their benefits but it's only for those who need it. These so called professionals need to stop marketing these expensive equipment to the average Joe's. You're the one who's doing this and I'm unsubscribing from their channels because I don't need to watch them anymore because I can't afford all of their equipment. Again thank you for giving me the opportunity to work on myself and using my entry level camera :) I always loved photography and you have fired my new hobby up again so thank you so much Mark. @Mark, one question on this video. I see that the shutter speed for the pictures with John are more than 60 seconds (some with more than 100 seconds). How did you manage to get John without camera shake? I guess closing the flash light for 2 seconds and then opening it will illuminate him, but if he in the shot for more than a minute, camera shake can't be avoided, right?

    • @RealWorld
      @RealWorld  5 лет назад +2

      Ahhhh yes ... great question!:) John did his best to hold relatively still without the light directly on him which is fine. When I flashed the light on John, he had to hold perfectly still which he did. Leaning against a tree was much easier for him compared to drinking from a cup:).

    Be sure to try a laser pointer... you can get some really interesting effects on a long exposure. Especially if you are tracing an object or using an object as your light painting canvas. I’ve taken a couple of nice landscape shots at night getting the stars in the sky and light painting a nearby object. But you would have to be in an area with lower light pollution from the city.

    • @RealWorld
      @RealWorld  5 лет назад

      Thanks for the tip Matt ... a laser pointer might be interesting/fun:). I thought the same regarding light pollution as well ... would be nice to get in a remote area on a clear night.

      RealWorld I’m fortunate enough to live in southern Indiana with a huge lake that has no light pollution. It’s been great for Milky Way shots this year! You should definitely try that with the D3400 and the kit lens it works well with my D5600

      RealWorld Patoka Lake is a good spot for low light pollution to the south. And it’s not far from French Lick. One of the boat ramps is completely dark at night with plenty of room to set up and pretty much no one there in the evening.

    as always lovely techniques... I want to understand more on Auto focus to Manual switchover.. You said while the light is still there focus on something and then switch over to Manual mode. So does this step need be performed before day light fades off or can it be done using led torch, focus and then switch over? Since you even switched locations during the shoot, i am presuming the focus was locked using led and then switch over was done.

    • @RealWorld
      @RealWorld  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks for the feedback/question Karan!:) Yes, I used the torch/light to illuminate the subject/tree and locked focus which in auto focus mode. Once focus was locked, I switched the camera to manual focus:). You will want to repeat the same process if you change distance/subject/etc.:)

    That was AMAZING!!! I had so much fun with my first experiments. :-)
    Need a little help here. My Sony Bridge has a 30" cap on slowest end and no BULB mode. Will an INTRAVALOMETER be able to give me shutter speed slower that 30" in this case or is 30" my hard limitation? Trying some long exposure photography and lack of Bulb mode is a bit limiting in that area, ergo, trying to find out ways to get around that.
    Hope I can benefit from some advice in this direction.

    • @RealWorld
      @RealWorld  4 года назад +1

      Thanks for the post/feedback and glad to be of help!:) Ahhhh yes, it appears your Sony is not capable of leveraging bulb mode which is the case with some cameras. Unfortunately, an intravalometer will not benefit you in this situation. The camera must be bulb mode capable for an intravalometer to push past 30 seconds. I am not certain of anyway around the limitation although would not be surprised to find a hack somewhere:).

    • @potatoesofdefiance
      @potatoesofdefiance 4 года назад +1

      @@RealWorld : :-) Thank you so much for your continuing advice and support...Much appreciated! I found 30" quite sufficient for some very basic light painting if I plan the shot (even though after watching so many of your videos I am still quite greedy for the BULB mode and wish I had opted for a basic DSLR than the Bridge :-D ...but, hopefully, some day). Also, found a Sony Camera app for Light Painting (still trying to learn it) - ruclips.net/video/biB1zc75C3E/видео.html - and this works with the camera I have (DSC HX400V). The exposure time is still limited to 30 secs, but it gives a bit of more creative control and a whole range of different ideas.

    Hi Mark, can you please do a video on landscape photography?. I don't remember seeing a landscape photography video on this channel. I would like to get a clear understanding on where to focus in case of landscape photography. I see some says 1/3 of the distance where we want to cover and some says they are using the double distance rule. If you do a video on landscape photography where we get everything from front to back in focus, that would be of great help for me (and others as well).
