I am so happy that your channel is finally getting the attention and subscribers it deserves. Will reach 100k soon! Also, I like your intros and outros. Somehow the lighting seems off in a few scenes, it would be better if you shot the laptop scenes in a brighter background. Been following you for almost two years now. Keep up the great work!
Nice review. I got a dell precision 5540 at work and I would like to say a few things about it. It's compact and for it's size it has some firepower.I had it paired with a dell wd19dc dock station and this was the problem. The laptop has only one port usb type c for charging from docking station. This means that if you have two 1080 monitors it is ok. If you try to pair a 4k monitor and a 1080p monitor via dock it will not work. If you put the 4K in the hdmi of the laptop it will heat up. From my point of view it should have dual type C to ensure the requiered power for 4k monitors.
Hi Andrew I love your reviews! I would love you to compare the P1 Gen 2 and this one... They are definitely competitors and would be great to have a compare review about all the aspects you normally cover. I am thinking to get one of them... Still more in live with the Thinkpad...
First time viewing your content, and really liked the style and overall video presentation. It was informative, well paced, and engaging; well done! I subscribed, and look forward to seeing more content from your channel.
I bought it with IPS 4K display, upgraded to 64Gb of RAM and 2Tb SSD, second year I'm absolutely happy with it. IPS maybe not so bright as OLED, but if you use it for work, text, code or photo editing, then IPS better. Gorgeous laptop.
This looks like a very good workstation laptop. The webcam is good compared to others we have seen in similar laptops. The easy access to the insides is a plus. This machine has plenty of power. The one drawback however is that for a 15 in laptop workstation, which is suppose to be usable for many applications, should include a full size ten key, especially for the price one is paying for this. I noticed the Lenovo workstation has a ten key on it. I guess that is the tradeoff. Each laptop has is good points and not so good points. Overall a very good laptop. Great review.
Do you know, how the performance compares to the i7 version? Especially considering the thermal throttling. Does it make sense to get an 8 core device or will the 6 core version give the same performance in the end? Also, what kind of work did you do for the battery life test? Will it be around 7 hours even for only light office work and web browsing? Thanks for covering the precision! Workstations don't get enough love, glad that you did this vid!
I have never had any problems with my dell products. My apple macbook on the other hand has a fan so loud i can hear it through my headphones and is going full blast even when just cruising youtube.
Thanks for this. Would love to see you review the new Precision 5550. Curious to know if you think it's worth upgrading from the 5540 and whether they've improved the thermal issues...
Please make a review on precision 7540,a workstation with a meaningful increase(about 50%) in performance from dell xps/inspiron/vostro/precision 5540.
Great video as always! Would love more details about the thermal throttling, more specifically at what clock speed does is stabilize after 15 or more mins of intense workload?
Thanks Andrew, great review.! How about a review of the new model, Dell Precision 5550? Which of these (5540 and 5550) would be a smarter choice for CAD, 3D Modeling or video editing applications? So basically the question is, which Cpu has better performance, Core i7 10th Gen or Core i9 9th Gen? Which one would you pick?
In my opinions, I thought XPS design was used so much aged now. I think it time to change insides especially that keyboard, it was look like my old dell inspiron so much but except the outside body and display bezel , and this was very good review. Thanks :)
My company gave this as a work laptop. I know its a workstation not designed for gaming. Still I wanna know can i play less demanding games like NFS payback, NFS heat, fortnite, rocket league, GTA V ?
I've 4k, IGZO touch display on my precision 5540, and I feel that the colors on the display are a bit oversaturated due to which im not able to color grade photos (which happens to be my primary workflow) could you suggest me color profile for the laptop display to solve this issue!!
I don't see any reviews talking about the touch screen capabilities of this laptop, maybe its only a later generation feature? I'm curious how it works with a stylus.
There is also a pen support for the 4K touch screen, while non-OLED, version of the 2019 Precision 5540. Unfortunately, I could not figure out the specific name/model of a compatible pen. Does anyone know that detail and may add some remarks about the quality of this pen suppprt ? A review would cearly be even better.
Wich do you think is best for auto cad and business and a little gaming dell Precision 3540 Mobile Workstation or the dell precision 3541 mobile work station or any other laptop u recommend around the same price range I need them for my college classes please and thank you .
Hi Andrew, nice job. Do you have any idea of which stylus pen one can use with this dell 5540 precision with touch screen? Seems that at the moment there is not a single one working on it, which would be quite awkward...
Texas A&M Engineering wants me to have at least an intel i7, 8GB Ram, 256GB storage, and a discrete graphics card. Would this be a good option. I was looking at macs but I don’t want to run bootcamp
mine heats up quick!! and it gets really hot, even during normal use. I do a lot of video editing though, but still it heats up so bad it burns your fingers if you pick it up.
do the computer manufacturers ask you to review their laptops or do you because every time u say the devices u review are on loan from the device manufacturers?
They ask me If I want to review their latest laptops. They send me the laptop for review and when I am done I send it back. They don't pay me or see the video before it is released to the public. I have 100% editorial control.
What is actually interesting that the T2000 and GTX 1650 have identical silicon. I think Nvidia should make REAL CHIPSETS for workstations and not just repackaging the consumer with a quadro driver. The benchmarks are very similar, if you don't use Autodesk or anything that needs a proprietary driver, go for the consumer version. You can get an RTX 2060 and blow away the T2000 (GTX 1650) on video encoding and content creation.
I have 5530 with intel e zeon cpu and 32gb ram and fans are always screaming out to make itself cool. I dont know but if I am gonna buy new one, definitely I will check this future of it. It could be anoying somtimes. and the fingerprint scanner would be very nice for mine one. with the 4k ips panel would be make you less happy then oled one coz it makes you feel the difference. and 5530 maximum ram capacitiy is 32gb as I know if you compare to new model that 64gb.
nice looking laptop but not for heavy loads ! Slim laptop is a not good for those things .4k & touch screen in early ages yet , making a lot troubles It is good for showing off & easy tasks :)
I bought 2 years ago my Precision 3530 brand new for $1000 with an i7 8750h and Quadro P600. Unless you do photorealistic rendering (Hollywood level) on it, then this device is very capable of doing the task. You might try looking now at Precision 3540. Before this device, I had the 7510, I was way happier with it, but that is more of a desktop than a laptop. The 3000 series could be a good pick for you since as a student you probably travel a lot. And since you study architecture, I assume you do not render much but mainly model, for that this device with particularly this GPU is best for you.
1400 score in Cinebench R15 is not very much, in fact, it is very little for an i9. I have an i7 8750h in Precision 3530 and I get a 1100 - 1200 in cinebench r15... and no, my 3530 has a terrible cooling solution, far worse than the 5540. So I am pretty surprised

Great review! I like the design of it, and I love that it has that battery indicator-I think more thin and light laptops should have one.
I bought it with IPS 4K display, upgraded to 64Gb of RAM and 2Tb SSD, second year I'm absolutely happy with it.

Is this laptop still good in 2024?

Hello,
Can you please compare Dell precision 5550 to XPS 9500 for performance? How does it stand with XPS and MacBook regarding video editing?
I need the first comparison asap too! Dell precision 5550 vs xps 9500
The other big difference it they only put the Intel AX card in the precision. The XPS only gets the Killer cards which I dont like.
I don't see any reviews talking about the touch screen capabilities of this laptop, maybe its only a later generation feature? I'm curious how it works with a stylus.

I want to order this precision 5540, but I need pen and in their website i found nothing

thank you Andrew for not answering after 3 years...wonderful
How would this compare to the Asus Zephyrus G14?
They didn't change the hinge style? That's my one problem with the XPS frame, the hinge is very weak and comes loose over time.
Can it support lumion 12 very well
