At 3:12, John Charles Daly says that he wants to see the kinescope of the show that Bennett Cerf will host the following Sunday. He is using the word "kinescope" in a way that is familiar to many viewers of this channel, to mean a film recording of a program that is displayed on a television receiver. The earliest citation of this usage in the Oxford English Dictionary is from 1949. However, the term "kinescope" dates back to at least 1930. It was coined by Vladimir Zworykin to refer to a special kind of cathode-ray tube that he invented to be used in a television receiver.

Jim Backus seems to have a sense about people. Twice, he was called on first to ask a question about the occupation of the first two contestants and both times he asked a first question that led the panel quite easily to their occupations. Then, he was the one who finally came up with both The occupations of the first and second contestants! They should have had him on more often...or maybe the producers thought he was TOO good!

Mrs. Rincon de Gautier was a Puerto Rico icon, and mayor from 1946-1968. Prior to that, she was a pharmacist, business owner (clothing and, later, flowers), and suffragette/suffragist. Once she retired as mayor, she became a Goodwill Ambassador for four American Presidents. She died in 1994.

@z At that time Hispanic was from the Latin and Greek that referred to people of Spanish-speaking origins and sometimes got expanded to the Iberian Peninsula to include, erroneously, Portugal, Basque country, the Catalan part of Spain. But it was not a racial designation. It was intended to be Spanish-speaking from Greek and Latin for Spanish, Spaniard, Spanish-surname. So it was not racially insensitive to those from Latin America. My close friend who is Cuban is of Spanish, French & Irish descent and is white, but is included in Spanish-surname categories. There are technically, of course, many peoples of the earth who are Latin-descent or Latin-language without having ancestors from Spain. Latins have long included all those from nations speaking romance languages, Latin-based, and sometimes others who are part of their nation and culture, though their language many not be historically Latin-based if separate, as in Basque. It was a language, culture based term, not intended to be a racial or ethnic category at all.

I went back to view the exit again, and indeed Dorothy remained glued to her seat as she shook the mayor's hand. Being mayor generally elicits deep regard and respect. To hold that position as female in those years speaks volumes of Mrs. Gautier by the commissioners' vote, as I understand it. She strikes me as a diplomatic woman doing a successful job of improving the lives of many...

As the Dodgers and Giants were heading into their final week as teams representing New York City, on this date the Dodgers played their next to last home game at Ebbets Field, beating the Phillies, 7-3. Duke Snider hit a pair of home runs off future fellow Hall of Fame member Robin Roberts, giving him 40 on the season. It was his fifth consecutive year of hitting 40 or more, tying Ralph Kiner's NL record (since surpassed by Sammy Sosa). With his second HR, he became the last player to homer at Ebbets Field.
Meanwhile the Giants were losing in Pittsburgh, 5-1. They would finish their final season in NY at home the following Sunday while the Dodgers would finish the season on the road.

I'm amazed Jim Backus came up with Mayor of San Juan since he seemed to be totally bewildered throughout his questioning. Even after an explanation as to why the City Manager (not Mayor) of San Juan was not elected, he didn't get it and questioned her as to why she was not elected. There are actually plenty of municipalities in the U.S. that have a City Manager form of government -- my home town of Downey, California, a suburb of Los Angeles was like that. We voted for members of the City Council, and they hired a City Manager to run the day-to-day operations of the city. We had an honorary mayor to officiate at public events -- he or she was chosen by the City Council from among their own ranks and the Mayor had no authority beyond that of a City Council member. It sounded to me as if San Juan elected its City Council and they hired Ms. Gautier to be the City Manager (rather than the Mayor) and oversee the daily operations of the city.

"Atlas Shrugged" was not published until October 10, 1957, so Dorothy must have gotten an advance copy from Bennett. Anyone who has read the novel either loves or hates it, it seems. This is not the forum for discussing the merits of the book, so I will only mention two things that I find interesting in relation to it.
First, Bennett Cerf couldn't stand Rand's philosophy, but he believed the book was important enough to publish. He was also impressed by Rand's intellect and character, and the two became good friends despite their philosophical differences.
Second, Rand was born Alisa Rosenbaum. She chose the pen name "Rand" from the typewriter she was using in her early writing days -- a Remington Rand, the company that was one of the sponsors of WML at the time the book was published.

I hate that Rand philosophy too. I read the book in high school along with some friends of mine. We all agreed it was basically wrong. I later thought it formed the basis for many right wing policies promoted by the likes of Paul Ryan and others. Never mind - I love WML.

I understand and can agree with the disdain of living by Heart instead of Mind, but I do think it is wrong to dismiss Heart entirely. There is an inherent risk accepting a little Heart leads to being consumed by it, but it shouldn't be ignored. Compassion is vital for a society. Self-interest leads to prosperity, yes, but there are Innocents for whom Heart is required. Making it an obligation is what leads to Looters and Moochers, but the Innocents do not deserve to be destroyed because Mind won't acknowledge them.

Smart-arse alert! Obfuscating means hiding the truth but not necessarily lying, so Bennett Cerf's definition is slightly off. John Daly is very good at obfuscating in that he keeps a poker face and won't accept a vague question which might get a 'yes' by chance - he asks the panel members to be more specific in the hope that they will deserve a 'no'. Bennett Cerf is right to think he can't do the job as well the following week - Mr Daly is the master!

Dorothy's questions can be very frustrating at times. "an island that encompasses two nations rather than one" Lady, if you mean Hispaniola, ask that. If you don't know the island's name, name the countries. Frankly, she doesn't Haitian, though. And I doubt that Saint Martin/Saint-Martin/Sint Maarten even came to mind. And for God's sake don't use words like "prevalent" with non-native speakers.

Does it have any properties of elasticity? Dorothy - how about just “does it have any elastic?” The panelists were very bright, but at times, some of them could be intellectual snobs.

    • @RoosterPisces2U
      @RoosterPisces2U Год назад +1

"Having elastic" would refer to a single strand such as in the waistband or ankle area of pants. "Having elasticity" would refer to an entire segment of cloth. Sweat pants have elastic in waist and ankles. Yoga pants have elasticity as they stretch all over. Girdles in the 50's were constructed with segments of stretchy material prompting Dorothy to ask if it contained elasticity. Also both women were familiar with wearing such a garment.
That said, the panel of regulars could at times be condescending to folks outside of the NYC scene. Imo, elasticity vs elastic wasn't a pompous exchange.

Dorothy was quite unfamiliar with speaking with people who did not speak English well. She kept using complicated words that foreign guests could not possibly understand. With the Mayor of Puerto Rico she was fair, but with the Girdle designer from Sweden, she kept using her 10 dollar words. All this proves that people here were not and still are not sensitive to this and tend not to revert to using simpler language to convey their communications with others from foreign lands. I supposed I am jaded because I speak multiple languages, but this was my observation, albeit probably controversial or pejorative.

OK, who ordered the word salad here? (George, if auto-correct changed several of your words, I'm joking at it rather than at you.) But seriously, if I'm getting your meaning here, there were some game show scandals about this time, but What's My Line wasn't involved in them. If anything, because of the scandals, there was more scrutiny than before, and WML never was "busted" as you suggest.
