My favorite nursery “hack” is to keep a small storage tote in the room/closet for “memories”. So much paperwork and other sentimental items come in during the first year. The smaller bin (vs a jumbo tote) keeps it in check but allows for a safe place for special little items.
One thing to note - The white dresser is pretty short. I am 5'9 and I will be hunching over to even change the baby. The drawers are also very low so you really have to bend over to get anything from it. Love the way it looks, but when we viewed in Ikea it was on the second shelf so I did not notice how tall it actually was. I should have measure in the space but after watching this video just thought it would work. Luckily my husband is buying a some risers or making a platform for me as I am 20 weeks and even putting the laundry in the drawers is hurting my back. Just a thing to think about before purchasing!
I have 3 kids under 4. Their fave game when I'm breastfeeding baby is to take out all the bins from their carefully organized dressers and dump all the clean clothes all over their room. When they're feeling extra, they mix it in with the dirty clothes. I'm so over it so I made a system in their closet which I can lock so they can't access their clothes. It's way less efficient but my blood pressure couldn't handle it!!
I was just about to say but baby locks over the drawers yiu got this mama it aint easy rasing tiny humans 🤣💕 my son would find his wipe/daiper box and dump all of them out 😭💞
Sounds to ME (and this is just MY humble opinion) like a busy mama of 3 tiny humans - doing what tiny humans do - who figured out a workable solution to something that was causing her headaches. It sounds like she's just handling life in her own personal best way! Judging a stranger's parenting based on a few sentences on an internet video isn't always fair. We would all do well to give each other a little bit of grace now and then ❤ much love!
We put baby locks on EVERYTHING! 😂 We have three 4 and under and one on the way... They were doing the same. The only accessible drawers and cupboards have things they ARE allowed to play with. We even actually have baskets we hung from hangers filled with their socks so they can't reach them and tear them apart. Hahaha #momlife
I like the "outgrown box". We keep a bin in the attic with the next size of clothes and cloth diapers. My kids share a room, #3 is due in a month and there will be no more nurseries in this house... We never used a changing table, we just threw the kids on any surface to change them. We use a rolling cart which hold diapers/blankets/burp cloths/wipes in the living room/dining area, which is literally where we spend 95% of our time. We also have a rolling cart which holds all of our homeschool material. I'm convinced rolling carts are the best home hack of our generation!
I watched this because I love a useful, convenient space and I wanted to see someone else’s ideas. As I’m watching, I’ve discovered I’ve done the same thing in my daughter’s nursery. The dresser instead of changing table, organizers/dividers in the dresser, ruggable, wall book shelves! These ideas have definitely been useful and convenient in her nursery!
I also have a ruggable rug in my baby's room, and I love that they're thin enough to put pads underneath. We just got some super cheap harbor freight anti-fatigue mats and putting them under the ruggle rug is still smooth and no tripping hazard!
I used to not be able to sleep unless it was pitch black. I didnt even like the tiny light that stayed on the on the t.v sensor. I found that Velcro on the inside of the curtain and the wall, all the way around works great!!
It’s better to not use blackout curtains....that way baby can differentiate between night and day. In the NICU we make sure we open the windows during the day so they don’t get day/night switched. Just thought this might help someone!
Thank you for this video! I’m pregnant with my first and I’m trying to figure out where to even start with the room set up 🥰 great tips! Love the rooms!
I love the idea of a dresser for a changing table! As someone having a c section I love my changing table that doubles as a baby bath under the change mat. It has a drain hose and it’s so eased to move to and from the bathroom
A tip to make the blackout curtains more effective: instead of using a decorative or straight curtain rod, use the old school ones that wrap around. They're really cheap in big box stores, and bring the curtains back around to the wall/window frame.
They have really nice and decorated ones as well. I have a double rod one. Works great for layering and adding color and texture but practical as well. I got a curtain with the holes on top that makes it easy to close and open. I find that the fabric ties ones or inserted in fabric ones are hard to close abc open. Makes such a difference.
When my first was a baby I finally set up 3 bins, donate, try to sell, and keep (for next baby or give to a friend). I was tired of too small clothes ending up back in the laundry cycle. We also got a tool chest to use as his changing table. It started as a funny photo I showed my husband and he loved it. I actually grew to love it too. I picked white with a beautiful wooden top. It looked really sharp, not hillbilly. I enjoy knowing it’ll be used for years to come in my husband’s shop.
My kid never had blackout curtains. As a baby she had white shades so for naps her room was just a little dim, but nowhere near dark. She slept like sleeping beauty and I could even go in and vacuum her room without waking her. As for myself, I slept without curtains for years! Love the natural light seeping in, in the morning.
I love the IKEA spice rack hack for books. What a great budget-friendly idea! FTM due in March so I'm learning ALL the hacks that I can. Thanks, Kallie!
The curtain hacks is everything! You don't know the stress until you have a baby and it really takes a forward thinker to understand that the lack of darkness makes for a troubled baby sleeper. Thanks for this!
I love your videos and I love YOU! You're so real, down to Earth, and wise. I'm a brand new Grandma (Gigi) and I'm passing your videos on to my daughter 💓
I sewed the loop halves of Velcro strips along the edges of my curtains, then glued the hook halves onto the edge of the window frame to keep the light out
I'm expected first baby in May. I have all the tips you suggested except for an empty bin for outgrown clothes. That's a great idea. So I'll be adding that to the top of the closet rack
Some really clever ideas. The blackout window treatment idea is good for a variety of situations. I’m going to offer a different perspective on newborn sleeping. My son was born in winter and had jaundice. (He was born a month early) he slept with therapeutic lights for the first week+ of his life. He needed some kind of light source at night for several years afterward.
Try using a curtain rod that has a curve and hang it correctly not just aligned with the window frame. Light doesn’t come though the sides cause the curtains are on the sides of the frame of the window. I notice how much people incorrectly hang curtain rods that it is the most common mistake people make. Your not suppose to line a curtain rod with the window frame/trim. The curtains are suppose to cover the window frame or trim. Just a thought to help with lighting not coming though. Also you could do a double rod to have two curtain layers one that is sheer or lighter also to add color (maybe you could use the color one you originally was going to use) more see though for the day to get light and the other a black out curtain for night. But I have found that a curved or wrap bar/rod works great.
With respect to window coverings, if you mount your curtain rod close to the ceiling and at least a foot wider than the window itself, and then have curtains that are nice and full (fabric should be 2.5 times your actual window width) and that go long, close to the floor is awesome, that sort of mounted curtain plus blinds block out ALL the light, no magnets or fancy tricks required. Also, those are pretty much all standard decorator’s tips for mounting curtains anyways. They look good open and closed.
A cheap window hack that I use is a black plastic table cloth taped or tacked to the window. I hung our existing curtains over the table cloth and no one can tell that is it there. I also take one with me anytime we travel. It works wonders!
These are awesome hacks. Not just for new moms, but for everyone. Black out curtains are essential. For everyone. 😆 especially for those who are ill or deal with migraines. 😫 Ty for sharing.
Such a cute nursery!! I can’t wait until it my turn. I never really thought about shades or blinds. That’s important for napping! Black out certain seems like a great idea.
Personally I found for my sons window to black out the sun i got pulldown shades from walmart that are about $10 and you tear them to fit the window and mount inside the window sill, and i also use a black out curtain in front of it. Youre trick is a great one too Kallie!
I love the labels on the drawers. Like on that exact spot! I never thought of putting labels on thr drawers upright where you can actually see them right away once you open the drawer. And its also not outside the drawer that ruins the drawer and it doesnt look cute
Thank you 🙏 ftm and my baby is due in February less than 5 weeks 😅 you can never know enough hacks and info to be and feel more prepared. Every last bit helps!
I am long past the days of having a newborn but I still enjoyed watching this video. You have come up with some great solutions to what can be big problems! I especially like the way you organize the dresser drawers. This habit will serve you well as your kids grow out of baby and toddler days. They will know where to put their clean clothes and what goes where. The rugs in your kids’ rooms are really gorgeous. I remember the day my six years old son puked all the way from his bed, into the hall, and across to the bathroom. Of course there was carpet on the hallway floor. Nasty! That was just a nasty job. Good luck with your delivery and I can’t wait for your birth announcement; I don’t imagine you can wait for it either! LOL ♥️
Labels also make it super easy for other people to know where things go if someone wants to help (yay friends and family who do a little laundry and picking up).
So for not allowing the light to come in through the sides of the blackout curtains amazon actually sells curved curtain rod which is what I use in my daughters room. It curves around at the top instead of a typical straight bar, so when you pull the curtains over it doesn’t just go straight across they curve around the side blocking the front and side light.
Soo excited for you !! our babygirl(shes 25) is having a baby boy in feb we cant wait and thank u for the tip im sure my daughter will be using your tip about the blackouts💕
Don't think you need to but my expensive furniture...Cube shelves are great for baby/kid rooms because they're super versatile. We have large unit in my son's room (make sure to use the wall anchors); some shelves have books, extra diapers and wipes are in a bin, shoes on another shelf, a bin on the bottom holds some toys, blankets are in a cube, etc. My daughter's room has the same thing happening on just a standard bookcase with some dollar tree plastic baskets (I use them in my drawes for socks too)
In the bedrooms i dont have decorative curtain rods. I use the whir ones that kinda wrap around the whole window so the the curtain blocks the whole window.
Same! I have 3 kids never had blackout curtains. Our power went out the other night and my 4 month old screamed and cried so much until I got a camping lantern set up in our room, My 3 year old and 6 year old need some light to sleep too.
I think it would also depend on what side of the house the nursery is on (windows) , size of windows, as well as the season ! I had a winter baby where it was dark at 4p.m so bed time was easy. I have also had a baby in Summer and her nursery had a large double window facing East so she had alot more light coming in and to as late as midnight. It really does just depend on the specific home, child, etc.
I was gifted a changing table, and thus felt obligated to use it. Not only is it super wobbly and takes up space that could be better used, but she’s outgrown it at not even 18 months. The dresser is so much better.
I love the colour combinations you used in the nursery! Looks so happy and uplifting. Especially love the ruggable rug. Can you share where you got your grey cardigan? Thanks so much!
Dear parents! When Your kids are very good behaviour all the time and always taking good care of their things, keeping their rooms very clean, loving their favorite things and want to make nice childhood collections of their things: books, clothes, toys, video games, clothes, DVDs and etc, then donataing is very wrong thing to do. If You have few space then storage boxes and shelves will help You out and Your kids will be very happy and thankful then, if they can keep their favourite things. Childhood things are very valuable and it is very sad, if they won’t see them anymore in their life. Every child should have the right to keep their things, if they can take good care of them all the time!!! Respectfully, Astra Viil ☺️🙏
I bought two dressers and made them into a changing station. One in the living room and one in the bedroom. It just made sense to buy a dresser instead. I personally can sleep just fine whether there’s light or not. I used to be extremely scared of the dark as a kid so I would keep the lights on. I think I’m just gonna let her sleep with naturally dark room without trying to make it darker. It just makes it easier when you’re an adult
I dont know if this will help looks like this video was posted a while ago but you could also get those... Aye what are they called? Curtain holders and tuck the sides into them. This way you can start gradually letting in a tiny bit of light... A little more... A little more... Until the child can sleep with a decent amount of light which may help with naps that may happen out of the house or nursery. I hope this maybe helps someone
Hi Callie! Have you tried the curtain rods that curve at the corners! I'm a vampire and need it to be completely black when I sleep and although the rods aren't really noticeable visible or pretty they do block out almost all the light because the curtains can like curve in if that makes any sense!!!? I wish I could insert a photo!!
I wonder if you could use a command strip to attach the magnet to the wall. If the magnet was strong enough to place the second magnet over top of the curtain to hold in place instead of gluing it to the curtain.
I don't have a kid....I'm not pregnant....yet I still watch these videos. You make organizing so soothing and easy going. Always a fan of your videos ☺️
My favorite nursery “hack” is to keep a small storage tote in the room/closet for “memories”. So much paperwork and other sentimental items come in during the first year. The smaller bin (vs a jumbo tote) keeps it in check but allows for a safe place for special little items.
I find plastic shoe box sized boxes work great for sentimental through the ages
I wish I saw this comment before. I lost my baby’s umbilical cord and I’m absolutely gutted
I love that the dresser as a changing table is more multi-functional than just for them as an infant! What a great idea!
Ikea do fab ones that change into desks. Especially as i prefer to be front on not side on.
I'm really surprised people get specific changing tables still 😂
@@samanthab3292 I've noticed were I live alot have one and have it downstairs in living room normally
We always did this is my country, I only found out that people in the US got specific changing tables now, never even knew those existed.

Do you look for a specific “change table” with drawers or just any usual dresser?
They make curtain rods that allow the curtain to curve around window and block that light that comes from sides! We use them in our nursery

Love your videos and by the way: love your baby rooms. So tasteful, real creative and balanced color schemes.
Respectfully,
Astra Viil

Love your videos! ❤️ Can you do a what’s in my hospital bag or things that you’ve bought for baby #2 ?

My friend got u shaped curtain rods for her daughters nursery. she found that it helped with getting the room "completely" dark!
Olive, Miles, baby girl’s room, and tape in the hair game... what’s not to love?? Great tips! I need the dark out info for my room!!
Velcro on the edges of the curtains and the side of the window frame might help to keep light coming in from the cracks!!
This is so helpful, thank you!
LOL im glad you noticed the piece of paper in your hair like i did XD i hate that i notice these things but thank you for this video!! helped me a lot
Neat idea the dresser one, but I find it a little too narrow....for safety I like and had it wider for my girls.
The magnets are GENIUS!! Can you link the ones you bought??
I wonder if you could use a command strip to attach the magnet to the wall. If the magnet was strong enough to place the second magnet over top of the curtain to hold in place instead of gluing it to the curtain.
This was so helpful and concise! Thank you, mama!!!
The room is Beautiful!

Love it!❤ Thanks for sharing momma
Aluminum foil works well for blacking out a room. I work nights, so I use it.
