Someone else has said this, and I'm going to repeat it. We've gone from complex heroes and simple stories to complex stories and simple heroes. We are not fatigued over heroes...the human psyche will always yearn for heroes. But it's hard to write good heroes; that takes talent. It's much easier to write arcane stories, where tying the audience into logic knots hides the fact that there isn't really a story.

Hollywood can no longer write women in a hero's journey. That would mean that they have something to learn, something to overcome inside themselves. That would end the writer's career, if he showed women in a light something other than perfect. So the challenges they have to overcome are getting the universe to recognize how awesome they really are, and for they themselves to accept how awesome they are. They are all Mary Sue's to one degree or another. With Rey Palpatine being the epitome of it.

I would still be absolutely thrilled to see more superhero fare if they were producing movies like back during the first three phases of the MCU. Not all of them were original or great, but they were fun. Things took a stunningly bad turn after Endgame because of the woke crap being shoehorned into everything. I was ecstatic about the new Doctor Strange movie... until I went to it and it was less a Doctor Strange movie than it was a horrible Scarlet Witch movie (keep in mind I like Scarlet Witch and enjoyed most of WandaVision). That was the last Marvel movie and show I watched. Comic book fans - which is who these movies are supposed to be made for - are not tired of superheroes, they're tired of horrible depictions and outright character assassinations of their favorite heroes.

@@wastelandsniper789 Indeed! And that's the beauty of critical thinking (wish more people were doing it), you can agree with someone on many things, and also disagree on many other things. I'm kind of tired of seeing people completely and blindly agreeing 100% with someone, or downplaying someone else's opinion just because they don't agree on a few points. I generally like Matt as well and enjoy many of his opinions, but I also agree with you that his pop culture takes are way off. All movie genres are repetitive to a certain degree, not just superheroes movies. We've seen a lot of WW2 movies, yet if they release a new one with great character arcs and good directing, we'll still enjoy it. It's the same with superheroes.
I feel like Matt has that tendency (like many many people) to mix objective facts and data (which he is great at when he points them out) with personal feelings and make them look like they're the same. Like when he was trying to explain to Joe Rogan why he's against gay marriage. He had no valid objective arguments other than "well I feel like marriage is for heterosexuals to have kids" and wasn't able to clearly answer Joe's blunt and honest questions. Even though I didn't agree with him on that, it still doesn't change that he's making a lot of sense on many other topics. So yeah, all I'm saying is I don't care about female or male action movie stars, I just want good stories, interesting villains and struggles, and great character arcs. You know, stuff that Disney apparently forgot how to do since it's easier to blame us for their poor quality work XD

    • @wastelandsniper789
      @wastelandsniper789 10 месяцев назад +1

I don't expect Matt to ever enjoy the nerdy things I enjoy (like comics, superhero movies, and games), but I'm also not going to tell him that the things he likes to do are pointless just because I don't like them. For me, golf is dumb, but I know a lot of people who love it, and that's fine. It's just that I would feel like I'm wasting my time playing it because it's not my thing and never will be. But it's not wasting their time because they enjoy it. I really like the Daily Wire, but they desperately need to hire more people who understand pop culture, because Matt and Ben - as smart as they are with many takes I agree with - don't understand it and both have the extremely annoying tendency to assume that just because they don't like or understand it, it doesn't matter. Here's the thing about female action characters that woke Hollywood has forgotten: the characters were human, had flaws, and had an actual character arc. Look at Sarah Connor, for example. In the first movie, she's just a young waitress and college student, and wouldn't have lasted two minutes if Reese hadn't been there to save her. By the second film, she's a legitimate badass, _but..._ it took her years of training to toughen up, and along the way she alienated her son, got herself locked up in a loony bin, and even after she was broken out, nearly murdered Miles Dyson she was so far gone. She was tough, but she was heavily traumatized, she had to endure great suffering, and she had to make incredible sacrifices. This made her human and therefore relatable.
Contrast that with Rey from Kathleen Kennedy's travesty of Star Wars. Rey can fly and repair the _Millennium Falcon_ better than Han Solo, despite no apparent spaceflight experience. She learns to use the Force and outfight Kylo Ren without a lick of training -- so she out-jedis Luke Skywalker. _Everyone_ likes her. She never has to struggle. She never has to pay a heavy cost for anything. She's a classic Mary Sue.
I didn't see Captain Marvel, but from what I've seen and read, it's the same thing. I remember from the trailer, seeing Brie Larson saying "getting tired of being told what I can't do," in a very bored tone of voice. She apparently just effortlessly rises to every challenge with complete insouciance. Another Mary Sue.
This is what happens when woke Hollywood pushes the girlboss agenda. They want to make women action heroes and commanding leads, but because those female characters have to "represent" they aren't allowed to have any flaws. Their purpose is to show that women can do anything a man can do, and do it better, and giving them flaws, weaknesses, or failings undermines that goal. So they become boring, tiresome, unrelatable Mary Sues.
Our best action heroes though don't have it that easy. They have to struggle. They suffer. They fail. What made the character of Indiana Jones take off like a rocket and become a cultural icon? He was human and relatable. He falls down throughout the film. In the beginning, he gets outmaneuvered and beaten by Belloq, and it's made clear that's not the first time this has happened. He gets beaten up, shot, thrown out of and dragged behind a truck. In the end, he gets captured by Belloq and the Nazis, and only the fact that they didn't understand the Ark of the Covenant and got themselves killed by it saves him. Indy's human, and people can identify with him because of that. What makes him a hero is that even though he's not the toughest or strongest, he never gives up. When he's knocked down, he goes down swinging, and then gets back up and charges back in.
Woke Hollywood has forgotten what makes heroic characters work. No wonder their movies keep bombing.

#1 People my age were originally interested because of nostalgia regarding very specific characters we read during childhood. When the nostalgia is satisfied, there really isn't anything that keeps you around as an adult.
#2 The scripts - writing is getting worse and the plots (with all the multiverse this, quatum realm this) keep getting even more fantasical. While yes, we're talking about characters with Superpowers that don't exist, most casual movie watchers will prefer the basic story to be more relatable.
#3 The only people who like "girl boss" trope are woke progressives, and that isn't surprising as it's basically the worst representation of men that people also don't like (obnoxious, highly aggressive, rude, lacking awareness - empathy etc.)
#4 People can tell when something is contrived, which is cringe inducing & a turnoff. It'll also get mocked.
#5 The number 1 supporter of female action characters are MEN (not women). However, those men don't wish to be preached at, to be ridiculed, to watch a non-attrative lesbian man-hating woman etc. on screen.

Right on. I not only do not find this ‘new’ type of female hero to be unattractive, mostly it’s downright repulsive. It’s just not believable, it’s not in anyone’s realm of experience, it’s too contrived, and worse, it’s being thrust upon the typical male audience against their viewing tastes. Fine, call me insecure or whatever, the reason I don’t like a strong female lead that supposedly can do anything physically a man can but better, is because it’s just not true in reality. And most of the time, the technical things these superwomen are somehow expert in also aren’t in the real world. Certain industries are male dominated because men are more interested in them and better at them - most women could care less. It’s just so forced, so contrived, and what I find illogical is that if these superwomen hate men so much, why they’re trying so hard to compete with men. Who wants to watch that?

In nearly every single instance it is pointed out that you can craft a story with political/religious/social messaging artfully woven into the narrative and end up with an engrossing tale. However, if you start with a political/religious/social message and build your story around that, you end up with boring rubbish. That is what Hollywood has been doing for the past thirteen years, convincing themselves after every flop that it is not the message that is flawed, but the audience. Until Hollywood gets it through their thick heads that they are in the entertainment business, not the social engineering business, nothing is going to change. On the plus side, I am saving tons of money and better utilizing my free time all thanks to the abysmal dreck spewing out of the theaters/streaming services. So, by all means Hollywood, keep it up!

Here's the thing. As someone who WAS once OBSESSED with the MCU, I valued all of the movies ar least a little bit, even if they were kinda mediocre. Why? Because it all sorta fit together. It was fun to piece them together. I would have gladly watched all the D+ series (and I was planning to). I didn't leave the MCU... it left me.
First they kept ignoring the Agents of Shield series on TV. And more movies started disregarding the things that came before. Like Thor's character arc is wildly bad and Endgame was just the cherry on top. Then Captain Marvel literally messes with the tessaract timeline and rewrites the legacy of the The Avengers (namely that Steve Rogers was the First Avenger) and also deals damage to Nick Fury's backstory and complicates things with the skrulls. Then they go and drop the ball with Wanda's series which was pretty good, until the ending.
So I'm already grappling with major and complex inconsistencies as well as character changes.
Then they start getting overtly and divisively political with Falcon and Winter Soldier. And I'm done. I'm out.
Now, even if they could make a decent movie, there can be no going back. I won't skip chapters and then carry on with the rest of the book... and there's no way on earth you can pay me to watch She Hulk or Ms. Marvel or Loki.
A movie or series is like a chapter in the MCU, I never skipped a chapter. But then the chapters were tedious, shallow, derivative, inconsistant, poorly written, contradictory, and insulting to the former chapters. Even if they made good movies again, I can't go back. It's too late. It's like trying to build on top of ruins without clearing the wreckage.

There is a reality behind why Marvels and many other 'female dominated' movies failed - women in general have no sense of reason (no logic) and they will not accept accountability when they are wrong. Jack Nicholson said it best when answering a silly young female who asked him in 'As Good As It Gets' - "How do you write women so well?" Jack's character Melvin said simply "I think of a man, and I take away reason and accountability.”

Here's another point where the recent Godzilla minus 1 movie with a sparse budget of only 15 million has smoked Hollywood big budget garbage: One of the most inspiring characters in that movie is the "wife" of the main protagonist. Seriously.
All the personal interaction with the main character was believable, credible. She felt real. Without thinking she sacrificed herself for the man who had essentially rejected her. Etc. That 15 million dollar movie connected with it's audience writing credible human characters.
Hollywood doesn't even understand that anymore, and as a result their "story telling" isn't able to actually connect with a human audience.

The reason they're spewing accusations of sexism and racism (irony because they want people to see it because of the gender and race of the actors and director), it's because they thought superhero movies were all garbage to begin with. They don't see the difference between older films and the newer films. So they think the reason people don't want anything to do with this one has nothing to do with the story and the fact that they insult the main demographic that likes these kinds of movies.

You had to watch hours of D+ content to have a clue who two of the characters were, the first Captain Marvel movie was released four years ago so interest has waned. The leads were all swathed in uniforms that covered everything but their heads which I'm sure also alienated the male market, the script was amazingly ridiculous, and Larson has the appeal and emotional range of a plank of wood. There's more but I guess that'll do for now.

But I don't think it helps that they make the women so unlikable, and also particularly unbelievable. It's hard to believe that anyone, male or female, can single-handedly fight off scores of opponents, but women with those kind of physiques just make it that much harder. If they had a superheroine that looked more like Sarah Connor, it might be more convincing. If they had a female character with flaws and weaknesses who can grow and change, it might be more interesting. Deborah went to the battle, not Esther. It's ok to have a Deborah now and then. We've had plenty of Esthers.

I actually disagree. I think it is how they present characters and stories. Weaver and Hamilton were strong characters who had personalities. They had character arcs. They had failures, struggles and setbacks and they rose to eventual success with their fans cheering for them because they had identified with them. They weren't heroes because they won. They were heroes because they struggled and people cared about them.
Larson and her costars don't have an arc. They are just awesome. Their writers thunk it is beneath them to struggle and they can skip the dramatic setbacks to get to them just walking up and taking what they want. Their only real antagonist is their inept male co-star characters who are just there to make Larson look even better by comparison.
It's lazy writing and people should acknowledge that.

Sound Of Freedom was released on Blu ray / DVD this week. We had seen it in a theater and purchased it to watch again .... unbelievably powerful film , and beautifully photographed, stirring story line, characters you actually invest in from start to finish and the acting is the opposite of the scenery chewing Hollywood type. Not too many years ago , besides the huge response by the public without any meaningful PR budget the foreign director would be touted as the next genius and Hollywood would be not only begging him to bless one of their turds with his real talent , but the young foreign actors would be swooned by agents and awards..... but because the subject matter is an "inconvenient truth" for Hollywood.... and the real items for sale aren't dolls but the real children.... Disney refused to release it.

Finished in 2018 released in 2023. And still it was tried to be pushed back by promoting opper and barb hard. I'm glad they surpassed the 100 mill in the box office.
Real movies being pushed back if you see the storyline I wonder why!?
