One of my favorite UNC teams - not the most talented, but, were a TEAM. Had experienced players everywhere and were such a great unit. So happy this squad ended up winning it all!!
Thank you for this video. I’ll never forget this Friday night, watching the game with my entire family (most of which are gone now). I had graduated from UNC in 1989. These seniors were the last of the players I remembered seeing on campus-and even having a few classes with. All was right with the world when my Heels survived this overtime classic. Good memories. 🥲
Thank you so much for uploading these great games from 93. I personally think it was one of the best tournaments ever in terms of talent, upsets, single-game records broken, and storylines. I appreciate these memories. You're the best!
I actually thought that this '93 Cincinnati team was better than their '92 team, even though they didn't make the Final Four like the '92 team did. They battled this great UNC team all the way. It should be noted that Cincinnati's victory margins in the '92 and '93 tournaments were 38, 12, 2, 31, 27, 37, and 17. Their losses were by 4 and by 7 in overtime. Those were a couple of solid, solid teams.
I'll never get over this loss as a fan of the program & Bob Huggins one of the most heartbreaking losses. When Gibson tied it I thought the Cats were gonna win. :(
Cincinnati's Nickey Maxwell Van Exel was simply "en fuego" in that 1st half, and then he turned just as cold in the 2nd half. North Carolina's size advantage helped them get back in this game, along with the 2nd half hot shooting of Donald Williams. Two excellent college basketball teams in 1993, laying it on the line...
The forgotten chapter of Cincinnati heartbreak. First round AD Jackson tore his knee. We will never know if Donald Williams hits those threes with ad on him, or a fresher nve or Tarrance gibson
So interesting that the only team from the 1992 Final Four that didn't reach at least the Elite Eight the following year...was Duke. Cincy, Michigan, and Indiana all got back, with Michigan returning. Duke OTOH, got KO'd by a Kidd...Jason Kidd. Even after this win, I still thought the Michigan/Kentucky winner was gonna be national champ. Shows how much I know.
Hey man no pun intended, but how were u 2 know that Michigan would play down a level after taking out Mashburn and Kentucky! Michigan was the best team and they let a Carolina team not even close to some of the historically lasting Tar Hole teams outplay them in the final! Had the real Fab Five we'd seen much of that season show up on championship Monday, they'd have blown Carolina out of the Superdome! I was 21 at that time, and to this very day now that I'm fastly approaching 50, still believe '93 Michigan is the best that didn't win it! Only a handful of teams in their category of not winning it all in the 40 years I've been watching the tournament, but the Fab Five is at the top without a title
@@bradlewis6514 I love how this UNC team gets absolutely no respect. People saying that Michigan was the vastly superior team, and should have blown out this UNC team in the Final didn't watch this UNC team the whole year. I might remind you, that they played one another at the beginning of the year in the old Rainbow Classic, and it took a last second shot by Jalen Rose to win the game by just one point. So, it's not like they even exerted "their vastly superior talent" even then. By using the "Tar Hole" reference, I can only assume you are a UNC hater....but this UNC team was WAY better than most people gave them credit for. This UNC team came back from 21 down to win against a VERY good FSU team this same season. They were a very smart team, that kept their poise, had great leadership in George Lynch, were extremely fundamentally sound and experienced, and well, had Dean Smith on the sidelines. No doubt the Fab Five were good, but UNC did something they didn't in the Final, they kept their poise, made the big shots, and showed it takes more than just superior talent to win.
Yes, Michigan had talent with the fab five BUT, they literally never won even a big ten title even, they weren't the best team in their respected conference. Yet, they played well in March, but Carolina was the better team. George Lynch was blue collar, Donald Williams was an assassin from deep. Extremely deep team, hard working team. I can't stand UNC but I'm a fan of George lynch and his toughness.
Thanks man. Even though I was almost four at the time, I would have to agree with you. I've heard about this tournament via highlight films from the 90s and when CSTV (now CBS College Sports) used to show Tournament Highlights from that time period. I agree with you about this tournament being one of the best ever in terms of everything you've just mentioned, along with 1983, 1988, 1990, 1992, 1997, 1999, 2003-06 and 2010.
Now this is college basketball, almost every guy is a senior or junior. You actually got to know who these guys were. This one and done era sucks. I’m not against anybody going pro, but you knew back then who was coming back and you knew the college season would be fire.
This is arguably one of the best NCAA tournaments ever. Big time programs with big time talent. Not to mention all the small story lines in between. The Fab Five, Duke upset, Jason Kidd emerges, Indiana and Allen Henderson injury, the infamous timeout. Man, what memories. 15 going on 16 and thought I knew it all. Cross colors and baggy clothes. Also, anyone out there think that if Allen Henderson doesn’t get hurt Coach Knight picks up his fourth championship?
i was at this game, HUGE unc fan, carolina was in zone most of first half and van exel had 21 at the half, and in the second half derek phelps was all over him, van exel finished with 23, its why carolina won
I completely forgot Cincinnati backed up their Final 4 run in 1992 with an Elite 8 appearance in 1993. That's damn impressive! In a way this was basically the peak of the Bearcats tourney success under Huggins. Outside of 1996 it was mostly tournament disappointments until he left....
I understand what your saying as a big fan of Coach Huggins. Disappointing sure however you have to look at what has Cincinnati done since he was fired tell the truth he didn’t resign he was fired. They have been to the Sweet 16 1 time that witch Nancy not only fired one of the best coaches to ever coach she sent Cincinnati hoops down the crapper. Andy Kennedy was interim head coach got robbed of a NCAA appearance then he left for Ole Miss that doesn’t happen in College Hoops. Interim coach does well he stays & gets his shot so that tells you how bad Kennedy knew it was gonna get. They haven’t recovered since while Huggins has taken another school to the Final 4. He got the last laugh & Nancy should have had the guts to stay after firing Huggins you stay you don’t fire the biggest person at a University call for change then leave.
Van Exels was a complete absolute jerk! Glad he lost. This UNC was a team that kept grinding away no matter what the situation. This team reflected D. Smith more than any team he ever had.
Cincinnati didn't have anyone step up with the scoring but Nickk Van Exel and he had a horrible second half the Bearcats looked lost and tired in overtime and I don't know how you leave Donald Williams so open for those 3's that really broke the Bearcats back
Man, that sucks...As a matter of fact, I've been trying to get the 1993 Final Four for a long time and we could have had a killer partnership, though. You must've had plenty of great games that I don't have...LOL
Via the Carolina Insider podcast 09/22/2017, Dean Smith told Brian Reese NOT to dunk it on the set play at the end of regulation. "You're not going to have enough time to dunk it," Coach Smith told Reese. Luckily for the Tar Heels, though Coach was right as always, Carolina came back and won in OT.
@@joannerogers6852 He coached through the Wooden era. Had that not happened he woulda gotten another one. He knew how to get to the Final 4. I swear--Calabria doesn't foul Arkansas down 1--UNC wins that game and then the NCAA championship in 95! nagging...
I think Michigan beats both...Carolina had the size and a specific shooter in Donald Williams to give them problems, just like Duke and Bobby Hurley did.
The Tar Holes would not have won the national championship without his otherworldly outer body shooting experience! His perimeter game was mostly responsible for 4 of Carolina's six games run thru the bracket
And also for Michigan playing down a level in the finals! Their underachieving performance let Carolina in that game all night long! Had the more than capable Fab Five shown up, they win that game by at least 10-15 points! The Tar Holes were so extremely fortunate, key word being EXTREMELY
Terrence Gibson when he made the layup to tie it I thought Cincinnati was gonna somehow win. Just another heartbreaking loss for Bob Huggins the guy has no luck go his way.
Huggs had AD Jackson go down in first round giving Nick no backup. Zelle wasn't ready yet. Of course 2000 was Kenyon and then 2010 Desean Butler after dirty foul by Duke.
He upset that great UK team in 2010. I actually saw that game in person. WVU hits like 8 threes to start the game? UK can't hit a single three...one of the strangest games I've ever seen...
If backup point guard AD Jackson didn't get hurt early on in the tournament UC might have gone all the way. Van Exel had no one else to back him up other than Gibson as Lazelle Durden wasn't in his prime yet due to sitting a year because of Prop 48 and Carolinas height wore him down in the second half. Erik Martin and Blount foul trouble didn't help as they had no legs in ot.
I've never seen this before--but that play at .8 shoulda died. The defender tips that ball. Clock shoulda started...I guess it worked out as it should...
seriously if it wasn't for webbers extra timeout the missed dunk in regulation would of been the bigger screwup of the tournament if UNC had lost it. Of course the refs screwed up by saying it would of counted so things evened out in the end.
