Final Fantasy VIII - Junction System Guide for Beginners

  • Hopefully this will help newcomers to the game now that the Remaster is out. I keep seeing people struggle greatly with the system and ignore key points, some of which the game doesn't say much about if anything. This is mainly a non-spoiler guide. I also will not mention how to be broken in the game or how to abuse the system. Also, before anyone wants to mention it, yes that is how the game displays on a TV. I didn't do any stretching or anything to the video.

    • @BlueLightningSky
      @BlueLightningSky 4 года назад +1

      The problem was that casting spells suck in this game. You can count the number of spells worth casting on one hand and most of the time you could just use an item to do the same job.

      @@Bahaumt86 LOL I laugh every time I see that :
      1- Even by playing on heavy spell-casting (which is what I did in my first playthrough), there is like 1 fight in the entire game that will last long enough to make the stat lost relevant.
      2-There's a lot of magic it's extremely easy to junction magic you don't plan to use.
      3-And this is also for the first message, magic is extremely easy to get through refinement, Drawing Magic is the worst way to get magic most of the times, if you need magic refine is the best option (not mentionning stuff like Card Mod).
      Magic is perfectly viable as a playstyle and you can beat the entire game Omega Weapon included with it, the problem is Limit Break are so fucking OP in this game it's not worth using anything else.

    21 years ago I blitzed through the campaign mainly relying on GF's.
    I never really understood or fully utilised the Junctioning or Magic system so when I fought Adel on Disk 4 i got stuck. I couldn't use GF's (due to Rinoa) and had no decent magic to protect her. Once you engage in this area you cannot leave and gain only 1XP per random battle...so I was truly screwed.

    One thing no one praises Junctions for, its how practical it is for element and status effects. Back in the FF6 days and before, lets say you needed to resist Earth. You would need to find a piece of gear that resisted that, and potentially was worse than what you are currently wearing. while in FF8, get 100 quakes, you now nullifies earth. And that is without sacrificing stats for that.

    this seems... extremely straight forward and easy... i just got FF8, and have never played it and was told to watch videos on how to junction because it’s confusing... but it seems extremely simple. you’re just combining a summon to yourself, which boosts specific stats based on the magic you’re combining it with, as well as able to use some of the magic of the summon.

      And the game doesn't tell you that the number of magics you junction to a stat matter. So unless you're curious and experiment yourself, some people have, like, 3 Firagas to their Strength at the final boss and won't understand why they hit like wet noodles.

    So let’s say I draw cures from some enemies and now I have 10 cures. If I cast a cure during battle then I have 9.
    If I were to assign those 9 cures to a stat/junction, does it lock those 9 cures to that stat, and I have to draw more cures before I can cast the spell in combat ?

    • @armorvil
      @armorvil 2 года назад +1

      They're not locked, you can use all spells in a character's inventory no matter their junctions. The only thing is, if you junction those 10 cures to your HP before the battle and they raised your max HP from 500 to 600, if you were to use Cure in battle, your maximum HP will go down (if you use all 10, your max HP will go back down to the initial 500). So it's better not to use the spells you have junctioned. It's the problem of the system, it discourages you to use the magic you have junctioned. Every battle can be completed by only using physical attacks though, and if you REALLY don't want to use any of the Cure spells you have junctioned (using a couple won't have much of an impact actually), you can use Potions. But it's easy to have 400 or more cure spells by refining items that enemies drop, so even if each of your 3 main characters has 100 Cures junctioned, you can safely use the 100 leftovers for out of battle healing if you don't want to deplete the stock of your 3 mains. The logic is the same for any of the stat junctioned, so if you have 100 Ultimas junctioned to your strength, it's better to never cast Ultima so your strength stays high (besides, since Ultima is a very rare spell, it's hard to replace those you used). The system is flawed, but it's fun, original and interesting imo. You're always excited to find new spells and in bigger quantity to check if they'll give you bigger stat increases.

  • @MIchaelArlowe
    @MIchaelArlowe 7 месяцев назад

    How confusing the junction system is is really overblown. Assign magic to stat, stat goes up, and the Auto commands get you most of the way there. The problem is that the UX for junctioning is awful and it takes way too much dinking around in menus to get anything done.
    Also only being able to assign three battle commands is a crime, rendering almost all of them unusable because you immediately have to start making tough choices.

      Yes, you can learn multiple stat junctions per GF. So if one has HP & Str, you can get both of those and combine it with a GF that may have Spr/Mag/Vit to have all main stats be junctionable with just 2-3 GFs.

    • @armorvil

      Not exactly what stat, but *how much* the stat you linked the magic to is increased (all spells will increase any stat, but some spells are better for specific stats than others). And junction 100 of them (the max amount) for the best results.

    On my first-ever playthrough of FFVIII: Remaster. Question: items are used to junction (boost stats)? So then if i use all of those items as magic in battles, the stats should then decrease as a result as they're not there anymore in the same quantity?

    • @Bizkit047
      @Bizkit047  10 месяцев назад

      If you spam magic a lot that's junctioned to stats yea that can lower stats. If you use like 5 in a fight, it won't make a noticeable difference. An easy workaround to this is to put backup spells from refinining/drawing on party members that don't have junctions and then swap in magic every so often when it starts dipping (like if you use Life 10 times in a fight so you only have 90 Junctioned then transfer 10 from reserves.)

    • @commenter6763
      @commenter6763 10 месяцев назад

      @Bizkit047 OK, thanks. Usually I enjoy stealing from enemies in my Final Fantasy games, so using the draw ability to get 100 of all items/magic will actually be part of the fun, then I will see how well I do w/out consuming too many of them in battles to keep my stats high. I think I understand it, but I'm only seven hours in to the game, might need a little more time to tweak things and see how it all works out.

  • @SENATORPAIN1

    So if I'm not relying on gf attacks does that mean if junction is correct too just use regular attack and limit break or also use spare magic.

    • @armorvil
      @armorvil 2 года назад +1

      just use regular attacks and limit breaks to be safe, but you can also use the spells that aren't junctioned to your stats with no downside (except depleting your stock of spells, of course), and it's not the end of the world either if you use magics that are junctioned. If you linked your Fire spells to your strength and use one fire in battle, your character's strength will decrease but it won't be very noticeable. However if you use up ALL 100 Fires that are linked to your strength, you will end up hitting enemies like a wet noodle with your physical attacks so don't do that, haha.

Do you know why? is it just not unlocked till you go onto the first mission, and the become official permant party members?

      you either use Ifrit's ability to refine fire magics from items (from defeated enemies you should have quite a few "useless" items in your inventory whose sole purpose is to be turned into magics), or you have to draw them from an enemy you can draw Fire from. I guess you could also draw them from draw points in the world, but you would only draw 15 at most and would have to wait (run a certain number of steps) for it to refill (if it can be refilled : draw points with the best spells don't refill). There are also hidden invisible draw points on the world map

    Honestly the only reason this game is so busted is that each system combos into each other so well and you can get such stupid results on the first disc. Primarily the card mod and magic refine abilities, those alone allow you to beat the game quite comfortably especially if you do a low level playthrough to keep enemies weak
