    Hey Heath. I remember, and miss, walking into a Best Buy or Future Shop and seeing rack after rack (after rack) of media. In some cases almost 25% of the store. Now you're lucky to find a store with a few shelves.

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight  2 года назад +6

      I miss those days too and have such fond memories of shopping in brick and mortar during the early DVD days, but then I think to myself "how could any store possibly stock all of these new releases?" It would be completely impossible to even browse the dozens of new weekly titles each week, and the stores would have to be the sizes of warehouses to fit it all! Or, they'd have to stock so few of them (for shelf space) they'd sell out immediately on release day. I'm kind of glad I don't have to worry about it and they come straight to my mailbox! But yes, those were some magical days.

      I remember shopping at F.Y.E back in the days (circa, 2006)😎, they used to have one massive shelf just for the Rap/Hip Hop category alone and than the last time I went, I was disappointed when I found out they only had one small shelf with very few selections of CDs! 😥

    • @MaximumWarp2099

      Same. I went into a Best Buy last Christmas for the first time in years and was shocked to NOT see the rows of CDs and DVDs/Blu-rays. Found out later from someone who works for BB corporate that media is largely sold online only to make space for appliances.

    • @nope5657

      I went into Best Buy (one that had a decent enough media section) and was utterly gutted to see that the media section was literally like two narrow metal racks with it's bones picked.
      I was last in that BB less than a year ago. WTF happened?

    Not to beat a dead horse, but I still can't get past the mindset (ten years isn't that long ago to me) of being able to walk into a single store get most of the movies I want and pay in cash. It's great that all this stuff is out there, but I have a hard time remembering (I do sometimes) to go to all the various boutique's websites and to budget for credit card spending (as opposed to I can spend as much as in my wallet). I guess I'm the equivalent of my depression-kid grandpa who hid his money in jars around the house well into the 80s. On the positive side, your RUclips and Patreon alerts are helping me.

    I so miss the days of Video Rentals, in my small town we had like 2 blockbusters and 3 Rent-A-Flicks which were great for the main stream VHS that were out, but then we had this little independent Video Rental store I can't remember the exact name but they had the unique VHS copies. Where Blockbuster would get 20-30 copies of new releases this other store would have 2 but get 15-20 movies. This was where I was able to mind films from Fulci, Argento, Soavi, and several other Gallo films. You are 1000% correct that is something that we miss and the new generations will never enjoy....

Personally I am not a fan of streaming, I like to own my videos, but that is a personal choice, but right now I don't have to subscribe to Paramount to watch my star trek I can plug a Blu Ray or DVD in and enjoy, also I don't have to worry about bad internet, but again I grew up in a time of video tape recording

      The feeling is mutual, my family used to rent movies from some Local video rental store but I can't remember the name of the business. That's why it's sad (philosophically speaking), that Family Video closed it's doors at the beginning of 2021.
      P.S: What will poor people who live extremely below the poverty line do, now? (How will they watch movies?)
      P.P.S: I really miss those days, cause back then you could really have "movie night" with the family, these days you can't do it (cause the parents are on their phones "doom scrolling" on Social Media & unfortunately so are the kids). . .I am not even a people person and I still miss those times!

    Great Video Heath, you hit the nail right on the head! When i was a kid Hollywood Video, Blockbuster was rows and rows and rows of movies, them stores are gone and have been for a long time. I remember walking into best buy and they had rows and rows of movies to purchase. The dwindling of movie selections in Target, Walmart, best buy, we can see that it will never go back to that because of the demand for streaming, big money for the movie distributors and streaming companies. It's where we are at but like you said we are dedicated to the cause and companies like Kino Lorber, Arrow Video, Shout Factory, Imprint, Vinegar Syndrome, to name a few and businesses like FYE, Bullmoose and Hamilton Books show us each and every day that it's not the end and that physical media is alive and kicking! Still.

    Physical media companies are wise to the knowledge that less may be sold ...but there is a massive demand for.. collectors editions ..special editions ..remasters ..and two things are apparent 1..the prices remain high and 2..the product is a must for collectors....also as a side issue they are at least in the UK marketing at what they call the " mature market" and not youngsters ...who have more cash to spend,..

    I completely agree - though its sad to see the decline of physical media in stores (in Aus we've gone from maybe 6 retailers in most shopping malls carrying physical media, down to 2 at most). But the content the boutique labels are releasing with massive amounts of special features is SO good to be a part of as a collector, and for it to feed content for people like you who champion the releases in your videos and written reviews.

    2021 was pretty nuts and that was during supply chain issues and continued COVID problems. I see 2022 being even wilder. It's shocking to see some of the stuff that is getting released on UHD in particular. Movies have really shifted to the video game model. The big games are still going to be in stores but the obscure stuff gets crazy releases from boutique labels and those collector's eat it up. I recently picked up "The Victim" on Blu-ray. A little obscure TV movie with Elizabeth Montgomery. Is that even going to sell 1000 copies? Yet, here it is. I'm hoping these companies are making money and there are enough of us out there to keep it going.

    Love the channel, Heath. Just picked up the Imprint blu-ray of The Naked Jungle. Heston in Secret Of The Incas, for me, is the progenitor of Indiana Jones much more than The Naked Jungle. That one's an eye-opener.

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight  2 года назад

      I agree. They're both huge influences...All the Incan stuff from Raiders, the costume, all that seems very inspired by Secret of the Incas. I think all the ant action from Kingdom of the Crystal Skull comes from Naked Jungle. But I also recently watched CHINA starring Alan Ladd and was blown away at how much it influenced the Indy character. His name is even "Mr. Jones."

    I'm a huge movie collector, been collecting movies over 27 years, since I was 12 in 1993, I own around 7,000 thousand movies spread across Blu-ray, 4K and DVD and used to collect video cassette but not anymore because of how bad the picture and audio would degrade over time, I really dislike streaming, it's not for me because of the horrible video and audio quality, plus you really never own anything on streaming, it can be removed from the streaming service anytime. I really dislike how everything today is going digital and how movies are skipping theaters for a streaming release, like there's no love or effort being put into them and for the movie collector like myself it's sad that I can't own any of these movies in my physical media movie collection as they're only available to watch on streaming platforms.

    There are so many classic films yet to see the light of day on 4K. It is so frustrating when films are released solely in the USA! If one buys the imported films at the extortionate price, the Blu-Rays are unplayable in the UK. This hardly helps the cause for physical media.

    Unfortunately the people who make physical media decisions for the main studios all live in a California bubble. There is a ton of money to be made on physical media, but the studios all had the idea that physical media is dead because Apple removed disc readers from their computers. Also they live in an area with generally excellent wi fi which allows quite good streaming, this is not the case in the whole country, or the world. There will be a 'vinyl' style push back by people who care about movies. Streaming is still not for everyone, but the studios really didn't get that, and bought in to streaming as THE solution. The fact that Disney and others have 'U turned' and now have returned to physical media suggests that their eyes may be open now.

With special features and without DNR (like the way they ruined "The Pirates of the Caribbean". Too bad Fox didn't get these titles out on 4k before the acquisition, like they did "Speed". Instead of struggling to purchase multiple DVD or BRD each week, now I'm getting maybe one or two items per month, but it's not bad. Many of the films I want, older Toho Studios films are still complicated as there are rights issues with Japanese versions vs dubbed as they were all done by different studios. Most have been released, but there are still 3 in MGM archive ( Gorath, The Human Vapor, and The Last War), that still have had no release since VHS in the United States. Yes, I recall you saying 2020 was the pinnacle for physical media but then I felt that 2021 was even better! Couple things I don't hear you talking about much on your channel, Heath (though forgive me if you do and I've just missed it), but what are your thoughts on Vinegar Syndrome and Severin and the kind of stuff they put out? And also, are you a fan of silent cinema? I assume you are but would like some more coverage of that if possible. Cheers!

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight  2 года назад +2

      I feel like Vinegar Syndrome and I are not really on the same page, and that's okay. I bought their release of Rad and I have a few others, but most of the stuff they release is not in my particular interest. I like Severin a bit more, and this past year, I did cover Day of the Animals, Grizzly, Cruel Jaws, Strike Commando I and II, and the Dungeon of Andy Milligan. My primary interests are genre movies from the thirties through the seventies, and neither Vinegar Syndrome or Severin really venture into that territory very often, so they don't get discussed much on C@M. As for silent cinema, I'm a big Chaplin fan and I like some of the comedy greats like Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd, but I haven't seen a ton of silent movies. My friend Vanessa is a massive silent movie fan though, and we've got a new show we'll be doing regularly here all throughout 2022. Episode 1 is already shot and will be hitting the channel soon! Thanks!

      We don't know anything, and any Twitter accounts (I've seen some ridiculous tweets that cite "insider sources") prophesying doom and gloom don't know either. Here's what we do know:
      In 2020, Jason Kilar was brought in as the new CEO. His mission was to stop the financial loss at Warner and bring in some serious revenue. He did this by laying off hundreds of people and building HBO MAX into a massive platform with 73 million subscribers.
      Most of the people responsible for Warner Archive lost their jobs. The online storefront (WB Shop) was shut down. George Feltenstein, the head of the Warner Archive division was able to negotiate to remain on as a consultant and non-employee of Warner, so his work continued, albeit without his team, Matt Patterson and D.W. Ferranti.
      In late 2021, Feltenstein got rehired and is once again an official employee of Warner Bros., and has been making podcast appearances talking about the challenges of 2021 and the future of the Warner Archive division in 2022.
      Honestly, things were looking really, really bad for a while there, which is why I was so discouraged going into 2021, but here we are a year later, and things aren't exactly like they were before all that happened, but things continue to improve and films continue to be restored and released by Warner Archive. There's no evidence to conclude that it should go away any time soon. The discs are profitable, and the restoration work is important to Warner's overall health as a company. Warner Archive in 2022 is not what it was in 2020, but we have a lot of reasons to be grateful and optimistic!

      Don't know anything about Secret of the Incas getting a Blu-ray (it wouldn't surprise me) but I do know that it got a DVD release in 2021 and that Heston's The Naked Jungle got the deluxe Imprint treatment just last week. My copy is on its way and we'll talk about it on the channel soon!
