Sorry I can't remember the name of the one mentioned in the video. I just would love to help out the ones who want to start collecting or grow their collecting. Please add your tips on growing a collection below to help out others.
those transitions from room to room were nice
My tips on collecting is stay single. If you find yourself dating or married, your partner will want you to spend money on them (they are selfish), take them out to eat or a movie! Do u know by the time you pay for your ticket and theirs as well as popcorn, you could have bought A Boxset or Steelbook! Stay single and get yourself a big 4k/8k TV and buy all your nerdy things
Best advise right there!
@@surroundsoundfreak13 🤣😂
@@surroundsoundfreak13 btw, great video!
This is the best answer. Whamen are way too expensive and NOT worth your time or energy. Let them sell themselves on only fans. While you build your collection! 😎
I presume that is a joke!
You do need to find a partner who understands you and doesn't want you to sell your beloved possessions, but at the same time, a loving partner is also there to give advice and if my wife said I was buying too many discs, I would use it as a moment to pause and reflect and discuss it with her.
My only advice is stay organized and know what you have. I've re bought things over the years that I took back or gave to someone. My movie collection is so huge if I didn't have a record of everything I have I would really loose track. Each area of my storage is organized according to who is in each movie. I've found that's the easiest way for me to do it. Any special editions, etc. that I have just go with the regular collection. I have a notebook with a written record of everything I have and also a record in my computer. I love your Craft shelf. It's so cute! I love that movie "to death" too!
Thank you. I should have brought up Blu-ray's app. It'll store all the movies you own so you can keep track on what you have. My Movies does the same.
The issue I have is with large collections like yours and many others I see on RUclips is the fewer chances the movies will be viewed multiple times due to owning so many. Unless you watch several movies everyday there is a possibility some of those will never see the player again.
The reason I collect is to own and watch the movies I like when ever I want to. It's not just so I can create a bulk collection of plastic and discs just sitting on a self. I make a habit of watching everything I buy at least once and if I liked it and kept it I try later to watch it again. I'm actually extremely picky when I shop for movies because of what I mentioned. Will I like it? Will I watch it multiple times? If not I will sell it or give it away.
My collection isn't exactly small because there are a ton of movies I love. But it's not huge like yours and the others I watch here on RUclips. Films At Home is a good example. He had to put 2 bins of movies in storage even after giving away a ton of them. That tells me his collection is to big.
Good point. I tend to watch movies over and over to where I will forget to watch the new ones. That's my big issue. Sometimes my other hobbies get in the way, but it still feels good to have it for when the time is right to view it.
I'd love to get a collection room like AVGN and set it up like a video rental store.
As a music collector, I say, "don't rush your collection." Take the time to buy something, enjoy it, and savour it before moving onto the next thing (alright... you can buy a few things at once ;) ). If you do this, after many years, you'll have a collection that you know and love and will contain many memories. If you rush out and just start buying everything you see, you'll have a bloated collection of things you have never watched, you'll run out of space and you'll wish you hadn't wasted money. If you feel like buying films just because they are there and they're bargains, cool it, put the money away somewhere and save it up so that in the future you'll have money for that super special boxset or rare disc.
Trust me; I have learned from experience. Many times I have bought piles of cheap films or music and after a few years I start trimming those out and trying to get rid of them because I need the space for things I will actually enjoy. Now I keep a list and hold off purchases until I am sure I want them and I only buy films I love.
My buying tip. Pawn shops, thrift shops, Craigslist, and garage sales. If it's something I just have to have I'll go ahead and buy it new but you can get movies for pennies on the dollar by buying used.
Great tip.
@@surroundsoundfreak13 craigslist is pretty funny at times though. You can get some really amazing deals and then you'll see people trying to sell VHS tapes for $5 each lol
Absolutely beautiful set there dude love the posters too
Thank you so much!!!!
Greetings from foggy olde England. You have fabulous looking shelves, I love the lighting are they LED? I use a blob of mayonnaise or olive oil to remove the sticky labels and tacky residue from DVD and Blu-ray cases and slipcovers. My collection is curated A - Z and a separate shelf for my classic golden age horror Frankenstein films on VHS, DVD and Blu-ray. Thank you for the useful tips and it’s very pleasing to see so many like you keeping physical media alive.
Thank you for the kind comment and greetings from Ohio.
Yes, those are LED lights. I got a rope light from Walmart and they work great. I'm glad you are also keeping physical media alive, too.
I hope you have a great day.
It does suck that Best Buy will no longer sale physical copies after 2023.
It really does. I hope they'll notice after losing a lot in sales they'll go back to it.
An open book case is easy to make since it's simply basic construction, so no one should be afraid to give it a try.
Exactly. Go for it.
You shared some good tips. Also, blu rays for the most part are cheaper well depends and that’s a good way to start a collection. My problem is I obsess over slipcovers lol
Those darn slipcovers will haunt our dreams if they're not on the new releases. They're our drug.
I definitely like being able to have movies displayed on my shelf and picking out whatever movie that I am in the mood for. I have a little over 200 titles.
That's awesome you have that many already. You'll have tons before you know it.
Good video my man! I have that lenticular version of A Ghost Story too, one of the treasures of my collection. I have to say that I knew it only because I saw it in a previous video of yours. Also have the vinyl, which was hard to find for an OK price.
Thanks, buddy. I didn't know there was a vinyl pressing of it. I'll have to look into it and hope for another pressing if it's too expensive.
Decent advice for someone who will inevitably have a problem
You did a very good job on the video plus it is wonderful that you are not profane like many others are. I appreciate that very much! Sincerely, Tom Pennock
Thank you so much, Tom. I try to do what I can to help others.
So true I started with 1 steelbook now I have 300+ lol in about a year which is crazy
Nice! Keep that collection growing.
My first 2 4K movie's I bought with my 4K player was Blade runner & Ghostbusters as part of 2 for $40 Australian
I just found your channel. This is the 1st video I watched. How strange you mentioned "Planet Earth". I own this DVD. It was an MOD release and I jumped at the chance to own and complete my Gene Roddenberry movie collection.
I really hope they made a 4K of it because I would love to add it to my collection again. Hoping all is well with you.
@@surroundsoundfreak13Planet Earth was only released in standard format as far as I know. My entire collection of DVD's is 99% standard format. I have a few Blu-Ray and zero 4K. My collection currently stands around 2,000 discs.
I meant to say I have over 2,000 titles in my DVD collection.
Cool collection my friend,, seems DVDs are more collectable than I realized,,🤔
Thanks bud. Yeah, some DVD's shot up in price like crazy. Definitely hold on to any you got.
@@surroundsoundfreak13 yhea,, 👍I do still have my whole dvd collection from yrs. Back
Great advice man and I know exactly what you are saying on every subject - it's knowledge that needs to be known for any physical media collector. And by the way your room looks great👍👍👍
Thanks buddy. Hoping all is well.
My advice, if you think you want to collect limited editions and things like that is to choose one franchise or one film and just collect that. If you don't set a limit, you'll always be finding stuff you want and you'll never be satisfied. Set limits on your collecting.
I say this as a veteran of 25 years of collecting music and films.
Most definitely. Collect what speaks to you and has meaning to it. I'll never buy to just only "collect" because at that point, it's a waste.
Thumbs up for Kung Fu hustle
No matter how many times I watch that I'll still laugh really hard at it.
One simple fact that makes physical media better than any else= You are 99% less likely to have it taken from you.
Exactly. Hush was a Netflix exclusive, and now it's gone. No longer available for streaming and no physical release. I have a great bootleg of it, but what about the people who only stream? That's just one of many movies this has happened to.
NICE
Your shelves look full that being said, how do you account for additional purchases down the road having room to put on the shelves if they’re full? Are you constantly having to shift things?
I make sure to keep in mind not to impulse buy but to buy what I really want. If I don't care too much about it and I still want it, I buy the DVD to save space on the Blu-Ray shelf.
I also try to dedicate to being more collective toward movies I love most. Dazed and Confused, Halloween, Scream, so on and so on, so I can keep those as a dedicated shelf and not hinder the other shelves.
Nice setup
Thank you so much!
really enjoyed the video. I've just started my own Movie youtube channel, and this info is great. New sub here😀
I've considering starting a collection (just my favourites to start with) but not sure whether to go dvd only or Blu ray only.
I'd go with Blu-Ray and dip into DVD once on a while.
@@surroundsoundfreak13 yeah was thinking that. It's only a few movies I couldn't see in Blu-ray but the majority of the films I would like are available. Think I'll go with blu-ray. 👍
@@kieranwhite4856 keep me updated. I'd love to hear about your collective journey.
It depends on weather you just want the movie or if you want the movie in HD.
I have bought DVD's before when they were cheap and if I liked the movie I have kept an eye out for a cheap copy on Blu Ray
Instead of having the physical cases on a shelf on display, would i be able to use a storage case instead. I thought about collecting dvds. So my initial purchase was a 400 slot dvd storage case.
That should work. Always use what you're capable of using.
Hey what are the shelves you use? The smaller one for halloween and the other one that goes up to your neck?
The two on the left are from Target and the Blu-Ray shelf on the right is a DIY shelf I built myself.
Pawn shops $1 a dvd and the $5 bin at wal-mart.
I always put my movie back in the case when not in use
Same here. Protect them.
the mistake ive made so far is to buy solo movies instead of packs like i bought jurassic park 2 and 3 after and know im looking for the first one. and trilogy packs are sometimes cheaper than the solo og disc
I totally understand that. It sucks when they announce a pack after they release all of them individually. They did that with Scream 1-3 on 4k.
@@surroundsoundfreak13 was not expecting to get a response 2 years after the video has been out. Great work !
@@muchamore321 I try my best to reply to everyone. Since I'm not a big RUclipsr, it makes it easy, but RUclips doesn't always give me a notification sometimes.
around 2300 films in most formats excluding 4k versions as i don't have that player 😉have my films in my cupboard
Dang. Sounds like a awesome collection!
Here's a tip, go to your goodwills savers and The salvation army. Blu-rays go for $3.99 a piece used. They have 4K UHD and Blu-ray DVD.
I'm sorry for the late reply. That is a great idea! I've defiantly found good deals there and at Dollar Tree.
I tend to separate my movies by genre
I do the same
Great tips!
Thanks buddy. Hoping it helps others out👍
Collecting is fun but as you get older you start thinking about what’s going to happen to your collection once your no longer here, my collection will probably be sold for pennies on the dollar and the rest donated, sounds like a sorry ending huh, think about that before collecting
I thought about that before and thought if I live once, I should get what I want now because I don't want to look back and say I wish I would have done this or that, or say I wish I collected this or that. Prices are getting crazy for some of my items. One quick example is the Halloween 15 disc set sold for under $100 or so and now is selling on eBay for 4 times the price sometimes.
I hope others collect for the same reason I do. It creates happiness.
Where can I get slipcovers to protect my movies and where can I get goo gone?
Ebay for covers and walmart for Goo Gone.
@@surroundsoundfreak13 I have a large collection of movies over 500. How should I search for the covers on Ebay? Could you send me a picture of what look like?

I have over 6000 movies in my collection, digital sucks
My man! Keep that spirit going.
WWE movies on DVD box-set 4K
Spreed sheets
Good idea
I need help with organizing by name
I do numbers first and the start with A and end with Z.
No need netflix
I have no dvds and no bluerays
I buy lighter fluid,a few drop and a few minutes later, just peel it off,no need to “scrub”.
Now that's a great idea. Thanks for the tip.
Collect what you luv - if you wouldn't want to watch it again - don't buy it 🙅
