I keep em alive in a jar in the fridge for up to a week. 4-5 days at least. They store well next to my gallon jar of live eels. Helps keep houseguests outta the fridge too!
You say this was the worst time to fish where you are in January…. Well my husband and I spent the 2nd thru the 3rd week of March in the Gulf Breeze/Pensicola area for our 20th anniversary to go surf fishing. Had 2 surf fishing charters. Husband did catch a nice 3 1/2 ft bonnet head shark on our day out alone, but the most we caught was having 6 of our reels spooled at Beach Bum Outdoors! The staff was AMAZING! Very welcoming and down to earth. Can’t wait to come back when we relocate there in a couple years for hubby to retire early.
If you are looking for a cheap ghost shrimp gun try using a super soaker water gun. Just take off the nozzle. Cost you about $5. They aren't as long as the real thing but gets the job done. Spraying a little food release spray inside the plastic helps it slide.
In Oregon we call them sand shrimp . Every bait and tackle shop sells them if they can get them . They are in high demand and a little spendy but worth it because they will catch anything and everything . Popular too with inland fishermen for salmon and steelhead . Good vid Matthew .
Thats a great bait, really common use here in Brasil. Here is called "Corrupto". For sure you will get great results! Dont forget to use elastricot to fix them to your fish hook.
Learned something new today!... Pumping "Ghost Shrimp". Never heard of the bait before. Next video is show how you fish with them. ??? Are they the "Gold Standard" of bait?
Great video thank you Matthew. My dad and I used to dig them with a shovel in Tampa Bay. Didn’t know at the time what they were. But we caught the heck out of Sheepshead with them.
Ghost Shrimp, I should have guessed. I haven't fished the ocean since the 80's. Never could keep them on the hook. And I even tried stuck called "Sticky" string. I may still have some. Now I live where Trout fishing is HUGE, but it is winter and the lakes are all froze over. So I might be able to start fishing in April, maybe March. Any ways, nice to see you on the beach.
Very cool! I'm headed down your way next week. I'll expect hard fishing, which will bum the kids out. I won't be trying to get those buggers, but I've been wondering what those little mounds were. Thanks for the info!
Your informational fishing videos are some of the best out there. Always worth the watch. I’m heading down your way late March for vacation, can’t wait to check out the bait shop and pick me up a bummy stick!!!! Thanks man.
That's a great way to use the time of year that doesn't produce many fish! I need to actually build my ghost shrimp pump! I've had the materials since spring of 2023, but haven't taken the time to actually build it yet! 🤣
Great video Matt, but I've been using them for sturgeon in the California delta for 35 years. And they do sell them in the bait shops out there. I don't know about the rest of the country, but definitely in the CA delta area towns and the San Francisco Bay area. Now I know how to get them free. Lol 😂 Thanks.
Thanks for the info I’m new at this and can you say The I’m hooked on fishing better late then never and just moved here 2 years ago. Age 54 and hopefully going to 100.
Not really a secret at all down here in Florida. We've been catching them since we were kids 35 years ago. It's great you share this knowledge with others though that may not be aware, or that are new to fishing. Many times here I won't even have to go into the water. I just look for the holes they make in the sand. 👍
You're exactly right. The females are the ones with the orange on their backs. That's where their eggs are reproduced. When you see them like that they're called a saddled shrimp.
Hi Bama in Australia we call them nippers there very good in salt water rivers but not much good on the beaches , the big beach worms are far better of beach fishing
Great video! I’m enjoying your more diverse content. Question: If these guys are such good bait but hard to catch why don’t I see you guys using plastics that mimic the Ghost Shrimp?
Ghost shrimp!! I’m not a local but I’ve fished down there a lot and I’ve got pumps for em. I’ve built pumps and bought pumps. You’ve got the best conditions to pump shrimp for sure.
I’ve got the kiddy float with netting affixed so it floats beside me and I have a floating net as well for those that aren’t in the pump. They go deeper in summer from what I’ve seen.
Up near the head and then down by the tail. The middle is just kinda gushy and it'll pretty much tear apart if you try to thread it. Then wrap it with the Magic Thread (the brand that I use) and you're good to go.
Generally, you want to hook the ghost shrimp through the hard parts of its body, up near the head and down near the tail. The Magic Thread will keep it on your hook.
I know we’ve had to get em for sheepshead because they wouldn’t hit anything else. Folks at the pier got mad at us cause we was catching and the wasn’t. We always put about a inch and a half of sand and about 2 inches of water over that in a bucket and as long as they stayed somewhat cool they’d stay alive
Here in Florida, we've been using ghost shrimp for over 40 years and Sand fleas People have been using them Baits for a long time. Nothing new about them.
I keep em alive in a jar in the fridge for up to a week. 4-5 days at least. They store well next to my gallon jar of live eels. Helps keep houseguests outta the fridge too!
LOL... Hilarious... I would still steal your beer... lol

Aloha. Yabbis and ghost shrimp are a completely different beast.
In Oregon we call them sand shrimp . Every bait and tackle shop sells them if they can get them . They are in high demand and a little spendy but worth it because they will catch anything and everything . Popular too with inland fishermen for salmon and steelhead . Good vid Matthew .
Made my own shrimp pump yesterday, anxious to try it out.
They do look wicked like a mole cricket. lol Thanks Matt!
Very informative & educational! Thanks!
Thats a great bait, really common use here in Brasil. Here is called "Corrupto". For sure you will get great results! Dont forget to use elastricot to fix them to your fish hook.
Thanks for not giving my exact spot away too much Matthew! Yeah, it looks like you had a perfect day for it, with a low tide/neap tide/north wind.
Learned something new today!... Pumping "Ghost Shrimp". Never heard of the bait before. Next video is show how you fish with them. ??? Are they the "Gold Standard" of bait?
Thank you for sharing this!!!
Great video thank you Matthew. My dad and I used to dig them with a shovel in Tampa Bay. Didn’t know at the time what they were. But we caught the heck out of Sheepshead with them.
In Australia we call them Pink Nippers. Some people call them Salt water Yabbies. Our ones have a much bigger single claw

I wondered what the heck those holes were made from!! Thanks!
Your informational fishing videos are some of the best out there. Always worth the watch. I’m heading down your way late March for vacation, can’t wait to check out the bait shop and pick me up a bummy stick!!!! Thanks man.
They sell ghost shrimp here on oregon coast. Guys pump them commercially and sell live to any store that sells fishing gear.
That's a great way to use the time of year that doesn't produce many fish! I need to actually build my ghost shrimp pump! I've had the materials since spring of 2023, but haven't taken the time to actually build it yet! 🤣

I'm just happy he didn't say he invented the fishing hook
Interesting change of subject, Matt. Thanks!
Thanks! I always wondered how to get those things
Thanks for the info I’m new at this and can you say The I’m hooked on fishing better late then never and just moved here 2 years ago. Age 54 and hopefully going to 100.
In Washington State we call them sand shrimp. I've caught both salmon and steelhead with them in freshwater.
Good to know.
Also heard someone say you need more than one. People on vacation see you doing it and they want to try. Double the chances of getting them!
Not really a secret at all down here in Florida. We've been catching them since we were kids 35 years ago. Good stuff. Thanks man!
Those pumps work great for getting gold out of cracks in the rocks
Great information! Thanks.

Hi Bama in Australia we call them nippers there very good in salt water rivers but not much good on the beaches , the big beach worms are far better of beach fishing
In Washington we call them sand shrimp. Can buy them in many stores.
Good for steelhead and salmon.
That pretty cool, Matthew! Does anybody make a soft plastic ghost shrimp lure?
Thanks for teaching me something new.
Will the ghost shrimp toughen up for better hook retention if you salt then down for a while before freezing?
I live in Sacramento, CA. I use ghost shrimp for white sturgeon. They cost $20/dozen!! 😫
Enjoy your Video’s, thanks for sharing. Did you ever try these for Mangrove Snapper?
Sand Fleas, ghost shrimp,Fresh shrimp and Clams are like the 4 primo baits for surf fishing!
Nice information, thanks
one style bait i havent tried yet honestly. everytime i go to the beach its rippin
Very cool video. Thanks.
Yabbies are large crawfish (crayfish if you're a yankee) that the Aussies typically eat.
Plenty of RUclips videos out there to make your own. In fact, I watched Bearded Brad's video to make mine a couple of years ago.
Yabby is a freshwater, basically, crayfish
Potato chips are salty
And tasty.
I live in the mountains. Thanks for bringing the ocean to me. Enjoyed!
I was on the east coast of FL. Never seen em
Everything ugly usually taste great so that’s probably why the fish love them, somebody give them a try.
What's your thoughts on the jetties there at west pass?
My pump is the Bearded Brad DIY model!
At 2:06 something in the water moves rapidly away from left to right. Don't think it's a shadow from a bird. Looks more like a ray or a flounder.
They look a lot different than the ghost shrimp in my aquarium
So are these just a bay/gulf thing or can you find them kn the coast? Specifically meaning the atlantic? Thanks.
And the fishermen in Australia are saying, “in the states they call these ghost shrimp, I’m not sure why…”.
Good morning from Topeka, Ks.
A great informative video Matthew. You only thing I have to Florida to try it out.
How much is the aluminum pump at the store? Looks good. I’ve always made my own.
Great video! I’m enjoying your more diverse content. Question: If these guys are such good bait but hard to catch why don’t I see you guys using plastics that mimic the Ghost Shrimp?
People got really into these in the last 3 or 4 months. No one had the guns locally. We ordered ours and made a floating net. Which works way better
Can you do a video on how to put them on the hook or maybe lay a link to another video where you show how to do it
In Brazil they are called “corruptos” like politicians
Let the haters hate. Keep the videos coming!
Those worms are called nerius worms. Bloodworms are much larger
Nice video, thanks
I never heard any ghost shrimp here in Texas
If you have those little mounds that look like a volcano, you have them. I think that they're found all around the gulf coast.
Yes we have them in Texas, but you can only have so many per day
They are all over corpus Bay. We were catching the 20 per day limit. I expect fl and alabama will follow with limits
How do they taste?
I was wondering that myself lol
Thanks
Have you tried salting them?
Great video!!!
I’ve never used them before !!! 🧨🧨🧨
I worked at a marina on Captiva Island Florida. I always picked those ghost shrimp out of our regular shrimp. Great bait
Good morning from Houston texas
Ghost shrimp!! I’m not a local but I’ve fished down there a lot and I’ve got pumps for em. I’ve built pumps and bought pumps. You’ve got the best conditions to pump shrimp for sure.
I’ve got the kiddy float with netting affixed so it floats beside me and I have a floating net as well for those that aren’t in the pump. They go deeper in summer from what I’ve seen.
I think that bloodworms come from cooler climates.😊
Does anyone make artificial ghost shrimp.
missing cmr x
Yabbies are what Australians call crawfish.
These are the things you once described as having the consistency of snot.
Great video! I’d never heard of ghost shrimp. Great way to be out on the water when the fishing isn’t cooperating.
Thanks Matt.
How do you hook them.with miracle thread?
Up near the head and then down by the tail. The middle is just kinda gushy and it'll pretty much tear apart if you try to thread it. Then wrap it with the Magic Thread (the brand that I use) and you're good to go.
Yes thats why he said use miracle threat
Keep in ref. For 4 days live
Didnt you try eating them at one point?
The snack bags work best Matt. There way smaller than the quart sized bags. We had to change water and sand often to keep them alive.
Do a video of live vs frozen just for fun
No. One bait for sturgon in calif. Live bait best
Ghost shrimp one of the best baits ever. If it’s fish there it won’t stay in the water for long
Hey hey, come on now that is top secret knowledge. 😂 thanks for the content
Hey Matt, thanks for showing us how to hunt for the Ghost shrimp; could you show on a video the best way to rig them to your hook?
Generally, you want to hook the ghost shrimp through the hard parts of its body, up near the head and down near the tail. The Magic Thread will keep it on your hook.
@@tomtatum2662 Thanks Tom, I will attempt that the next time I hit the coast.
Yabbies are freshwater crayfish.
Aloha. I thought crawfish were freshwater as well.
Here in Brazil we call it "corrupto".
If you weren't married you could fill the crispers at the bottom of your fridge with water and keep live bait...
Is it illegal to sale the ghost shrimp? I figured by now folks would’ve made a commercial bait run at em by now if legal
You have to have a tag and you can only have 20
for what...?
No regulations in Alabama
I wonder what Bama meant. In youtube there's Bamabass pond, Bama saltwater fishing and you. I dont understand.
Probably reference to "Alabama".
Here in Florida, we've been using ghost shrimp for over 40 years and Sand fleas People have been using them Baits for a long time. Nothing new about them.
You'd be surprise at how many fisherman have never heard of them
I don't recall him saying there was "anything new about them". He's just making an instructional video.
@@FoulOwl2112I never said he mentioned about anything new. I was just stating a fact
@robertsantiago4329 So you're just being a jerk is what you're saying?
This bait is all over RUclips, sorry but this is no secret lol😅. Good try though.
What a waste of time
Im unsubscribing. He dont interact with his viewers and subscribers.
Lol
Unlike East coast the West coast fishermen been using ghost shrimps or sand shrimps since the 80's. Kind of late to the game..
