      £11.95 at Toby? That sounds like really pretty good value considering it was unlimited veg, gravy and Yorkshire pudding and you had some tea....am curious to see how number two goes...
      ...hmmm I don't like thick stodgy gravy, thinner gravy is the way to go! For the extra 48p I'd go for the second one!!

    Never been to a Toby Carvery in my life. It looked delish! The sliced potatoes are usually called Scalloped Potatoes (if they are in a cream sauce). They can be baked in a little stock and would be just sliced potatoes.

    You can't beat Toby carvery in my opinion , I sometimes get a takeaway carvery and I've managed to get 3 good meals out of it, great on a budget for £7.99 in the week, and also if you ask for a turkey carcass they give it to you with lots of meat for soups. 🍗👍

    Hi EIE, both carveries looked visually very nice, but reading some the reviews sounds Stonehouse where I've never been, really due to not located on any travels or my locality are not the favoured choices. However have been to Toby's and never been disappointed, carveries or other options. I guess which branches prove better quality is due the level of chefs and kitchen staff within such establishments. So think I'll stick with Toby's but agree turkey is often dry in many these eateries, overcooked and reheated no doubt. always need lashings gravy which Toby's don't disappoint with. Another enjoyable video.

    I've eaten at several Stonehouse carveries, and I've never had watery gravy like that. It's usually as thick as double cream. My vote is for Stonehouse, as you can get a similarly portioned meal for 3/4 of the price of the Toby meal, and during the week you can even order a small carvery for half the price.

    Both Toby and Stonehouse restaurants are owned by Mitchells and Butlers, the later from a carvery point of view seen potentially as the cheaper brand. You went large in one for the same price as ordinary in the other. The meat was also better and the gravy spoke for itself, though I've never experienced such thin gravy in either chain. Beware though, prices vary in most places - even say in different Toby restaurants in same town, just like Wetherspoons. Overall though, both carveries good in their own way.

    Same owners here in M&B. Same suppliers and mash etc all done to the exact same spec, so any quality difference is lilely down to management.
    Toby is the more premium carvery option though, so I suspect that's why you get better things like beef dripping roast potatoes and more sides. If they were around the same price then I bet the Stonehouse one was in a more affluent area.
    Personally I think the Toby one looked much better though.

    Toby Carvery: better Yorkshire puddings, better selection and better value. However the gravy is actually made properly at the other place. Thick gravy usually means gravy powder or granules. Gravy is supposed to be thin, made from meat and veg juices.
    Stonehouse: Better 'real' gravy but that is about it. Although i liked the look of the creamy leek you had there and the sausage was a bonus. Why were they using frozen yorkshire puddings here?

  • @andrewgordon8859
    @andrewgordon8859 10 месяцев назад

    I'm sure you can get sauces at Toby carvery, pretty essential for a roast dinner imho. Mustard for gammon or beef, apple sauce for pork with stuffing, and cranberry for turkey with stuffing. If you get the pork the Toby also give you crackling too. Toby is a clear winner though those creamed leeks looked great. Creamed spinach would be even better I reckon 🎉😋😋

    We have a carvery at Ruislip Lido, not bad, but they just never make the pork crackling correctly, but then Toby, in the south, don't succeed at that either. To get decent crackling you must go up country to, at least, Birmingham. And, up there, they make proper roast potatoes, unlike the southerners.

  • @ellem2293
    @ellem2293 8 месяцев назад

    Toby carvery is good, tbh most of the pub carveries are very much the same but with some slight differences in price per person. I always go for the beef & Turkey. I also prefer the thicker gravy. Im sure Toby had the sauces but maybe they were out that day. Not keen on the roasties at Stonehouse, I dont like mine almost black, light with really crispy edges are my favorite roasties, it does depend on the potatoes used.

    The gravy on the second one looked a bit too watery.
    Folks who haven't tried to cook gravy don't realize how hard it is to get just the right consistency and flavor to it. But if you can pull it off it enhances a meal greatly.
    Okay, maybe not pizza. Not sure gravy would be good with that. But for most meats a good gravy can turn a good meal into a great one.

    You must have missed the sauces at the Toby as they certainly have them, usually next to the gravy

    Only problem with a carvery is the really thin slices of meat.... its quite hard to get your moneys worth at a carvery. Creamed leeks are to go with the gammon.

    I think it all depends on the local venues. My Toby is awful, rock hard yorkshires, pale roast potatoes which have barely touched hot fat and wafer thin sliced meagre meat portions. My Stonehouse addresses all those issues and I've never had thin gravy. I always stick with the turkey which is nice and moist, because the beef and often the gammon look fatty and unappealing.
