    Bravo Laney, it was like an entire R&D department paid attention to what consumers want and actually gave it to them. The fact that a home friendly 3 tube watts (with a half wattage mode)with a DI out and headphone jack well being built in the UK (or at least assembled)is pretty awesome. The only thing that is kind of missing is an effects loop which might have been a cost cutting thing or maybe all you need is a tube screamer.

      Effects loops are kind of unnecessary on non master volume amps, unless it’s one of those cool amps that have a parallel effects loop with a blend knob.
      With non master volume amps, you’re driving the preamp and power amp at the same time, so it’s not like you can put reverb and delay pedals “after” the amp’s distortion circuit.

      The Torpedo adjustment dials in the rear of the amp, are actually very badly designed and/or built.

    • @caseylockwood5512
      @caseylockwood5512 2 года назад

      Sometimes the addition of an FX loop can negatively impact the sound of specific circuits. Perhaps this was the reason for the omission in this design as well.

      Checked into ordering one or those epi Iommi Sgs but they are only using standard epi P90s and not the custom wound boutique p90s they used on the Gibson custom shop Version . Those pickups are huge part of the original guitars sound so I ended up Passing on it . Gibson usa also has a more affordable Version of the Monkey SG but it only has the standard gibson P90s . So essentially the epi monkey SG is not any different from a regular epi SG special. I don't get why epi has stopped using higher quality pickups in their signature guitars save for the Bonamassa lazarus les paul even some of the recent Bonamassa epis like the norm burst and the 58 black beauty have had epi pickups. I have the black epi Iommi SG from a few years back and it has the gibson Tony Iommi signature humbuckers and it sounds killer and does the latter 70s never say die era and early 80s heaven and hell/mob rules era tone . The lack of upgraded pickups has caused me to pass on a few epis the last couple of years although I have bought 3 epi 59s and 1 of the 61 les paul/SGs along with the black Iommi SG. I wanted to buy one of the slash Epis and figured it would have the gibson Slash buckers or custom burstbucker Alnico 2s or whatever you want to call them but when I found out they had pro buckers it was a hard pass . I also really wanted the Alex lifeson les paul access epi version but when I found out that it was not going to come with a Gibson 496r neck and 498T bridge like the gibson versions do it was agian a hard pass . The 496r and 498t are not expensive pickups. Gibson used to use Duncan's in al the slash guitars including his signature pickups but now they will not even use the in-house wound gibson Vernon' of the slash pickups . Even though the latest slash epis only have epi pickups they are more expensive then the 59s with gibson burstbuckers which are gibsons most expensive pickups unless you count used custonbuckers . Epis with stock gibson pickups or Duncan's with factory upgraded wiring and pots wil almost always result in a purchase high end epis with upgraded pickups pots and wiring factory installed in my opinion are better quality better spec'd better value for the dollar guitars then any sub 2000 dollar gibson like the les paul studio les paul tribute or les paul faded etc . The high epis have no relief unlike the chambered and ultra modern weight relief of the lower end gibson les Paul's and the high end epis like the 59 are hand wired unlike the cheaper gibsons which have PCB boards and quick connect pots and pickups . Low end gibsons usually have the 490r;490T or 490r/498t set or on rare occasions the Bursrbucker pros The BB1 BB2 BB3 57 classic and 57 classic plus blow away all the 490 series pickups and the BB pros . The upgraded or not upgraded pickups are always the deciding factor for me . Considering the gibson custom shop monkey SG had the hand wound John Birch replica P90s epi should have F least used gibsons standard wound P90s . Stock gibson USA P90s are fantastic sounding P90s .

    Those new IR technologies are great. By the way, you guys should make a video about actual cabs, because they are so overlooked. I didn't really dive into that until I bought the Captor X. I would use combos, or "matching cabs" for heads, and I used to think the whole discussion on speakers and cabs was a thing for geeks and purists. But cabs make a huge difference in the tone and sometimes when you think you want another amp, maybe another cab is just what you need.
    One thing though: IRs will give you the sound of a recorded amp, not the actual tone of the amp in the room. So even if you use loud studio monitors they will not react the exact same way as the amplifier and cab would, but you'll hear something closer to a recording.

    • @ThatMattGoodMusic

      True! Scored a Yamaha cab on sale which had Eminence speakers in it, a Tonker and a Legend series speaker. Plugging into either speaker one at a time was really interesting, changing the characteristics of my Fender and Marshall amps in a really interesting way.

    in terms of the flubby bottom end thing i think thats from jumping the channels, on those old 4 input amps people like Tony Iommi and Hendrix never used to jump the channels like everyone seems to do in demos these days, they used the treble input and it cut through the band mix nicely.

      Usually these low watt tube amps almost always have flubby or weak bass. A product of small output transformers. If you want a tight sound you have to go with the big boys.

    • @3rdStoreyChemist
      @3rdStoreyChemist 2 года назад +8

      On these old amps, the EQ is before where the amp is distorting. So it’s shaping the sound before it gets distorted, so it’s best to set the bass lower, even totally off for higher gain sounds. No different to using a tubescreamer to tighten things up.
      Problem is, so many guitar players are ridiculously conservative with settings on amps and pedals and don’t realise how interactive the controls can be, so set up a vintage style amp with the EQ all at 12 and don’t touch them for different gain settings and then complain the bass is ‘flubby’ when it’s actually user error.

    • @wootks
      @wootks 2 года назад

      @@3rdStoreyChemist Indeed you are 100% right. A low cut before your signal hits the amp can go a long way to tighten up your sound.
      In my experience with these low watt tube amps even if you apply all the 'tricks' you always have kinda weak bass for things like palm muting. Running to a speaker cab you can't get around a weak power section. Even the 15-20w 2x EL84 amps can be a bit weak sauce.
      It's not like this thing is marketed as a metal amp though. For what it is, I think it's a cool amp other than being (IMO) overpriced.

    Guys like Clapton Beck Page Richard's Bloomfeild Kossof Blackmore had no problem getting crystal clear and cutting neck pickup tones from their British amps whether they be Marshall Laney orange sound city or Hiwatt and o think that is probably down to vintage neck pickups vs modern neck pickups. Vintage bridge pickup tone is not hard to achieve with modern pickups and modern clones of vintage pickups but recreating the vintage neck pickup tones with modern pickups is alot more difficult. Many vintage neck humbuckers had a clarity that I'd hard go recreate and many of them sounded like slightly fatter bridge pickups.

    I am old school and started gigging when there were no pedals. Cable straight in was the way we rolled. We made great music without stomp boxes. Though I like pedals now, things were so different. I wonder how many could continue a long night if their pedalboard completely died? Some would be just fine others dead in the water.

      Some younger players have built their sound and repertoire around guitar effects, so thankfully things did move on. The seemingly never-ending loop of 60s/70s nostalgia is stale and mouldy, however the constant marketing for thousands of products that happens now is tedious as well.

    • @tjnugent62
      @tjnugent62 2 года назад

      @@deaddoll1361 The only problem with that is I am not preaching. I am telling you what I did before pedals. You are right about younger players built their sound and depend on the pedals now. Which is fine. Just saying when I was a teen ager gigiging in the local high school proms it was straigh into the amp. No harm no foul I think Danish Pete may be old enough to know what I am talking about, maybe not.

    I'm torn between this and the LA30BL.
    I am moving to a new country in a couple of weeks, which means that I am leaving most of my guitars and amps back home, at least until I get fully settled in.
    I have wanted the LA30BL since it was announced a few years ago, but they aren't available in my country, so I haven't pulled the trigger on getting one and paying for the whole international shipping and customs thing.
    Now that I'm moving, I would be able to get one. But at least for the first 3 - 6 months, I will most likely be living in a hotel or a small apartment, or wherever my company places me. So it's really not a smart move to buy a 30W head and a big speaker cab to go with it.
    But the LAStudio is a better choice for those circumstances. I could use it with headphones for the first few months, and then pair it with my cabs once I do the full moving procedure.
    However, I still really want the LA30BL, and I already own a Two Notes Torpedo Reload that I can use to play silently too. It really doesn't make sense to buy an amp to do the functionality of a piece of gear that I already have.
    But both of these are so expensive that I really can't get them both. Whichever I choose will have to be usable in a hotel with headphones, and with a cab later on.
    I really can't decide. Really what I should do is just get the Waza Katana headphones and be done with it.

      You can always get a multi fx unit like a NuX mg300, which works really well with headphones. Really affordable too, and NuX also has a new mg400 just out, but I haven't tried that. Either way you'll have something you can use, when you get your amps back with you as well.

    • @RobCabreraCh
      @RobCabreraCh 2 года назад +1

      @@castleanthrax1833 Yeah, that's an option too. I am leaning towards the Katana Air. It's small, it's designed for that specific usecase, and when I get to do a full move, I can use it as a quick practice amp and bluetooth speaker. It might be an option

    I think Danish Pete was right when he said it was loud enough to use as a monitor for your playing, but it would need to be sent to the house for sure... 3 watts can be really loud.. Or should I say.. It is really loud.. Just not Ryman loud.. That is pretty tame compared to a stadium gig.
