AMD Build Emulation Testing - Ryzen 3600 + 5500XT = Awesome Performance

- In this video, I test out some emulation on my recently built AMD Gaming rig.
This machine is powered by the AMD RYZEN 3600 and Backed by an ASRock Phantom Gaming 5500XT 8GB GPU. Total Cost on this build was $830 but it wasn’t purpose-built for emulation this is just a perk.
I test out some GameCube and Wii using the Dolphin Emulator, Wii U using CEMU, PS2 using PCSX2 and PS3 using RPCS3. Let's see if it can these emulators at 4K 1440P and 1080P!

What really amazed me was the Taito Legends 2 compilation. Run though an emulator, you can still enhance Ray Storm's resolution.

Hey you confirm something for me? I heard some said that even thought the 1650 super was the superior choice compare to 5500xt because of lower price but little more perfomance, 1650s do suffer from bad overall quality build, like the memory chip. Is this true?
@@capturedvessels7906 obviously 5500xt + vram 8gb, and there are rumors about amd being finewine, every driver update will increase some performance overtime(in some game), Like rx580 vs gtx1060 . But Amd driver is sometimes shit hahaha.

I don't really mind about going back older driver or doing some troubleshooting for the card as long as amd can offer peasant like me a alternative choice/second chance

(which is fortunate for me to not encounter a single one or wasn't fixable, the glitch that make doom crash immediately on vulkan was fixed by using ddu to uninstall both driver of nvidia and and then using the newest recommend driver)
@@capturedvessels7906 Navi drivers are kinda bad and unless you have pcie gen 4 then you don't get the full potential of the 5500 XT. I'm not sure what the performance is compared to the 1650 super but I'm sure it's not that different that Rx 570 vs 1050 ti.
@@capturedvessels7906 if you can, reference some of the benchmarks from gamers Nexus or Hardware Unboxed. Their benchmarks are legitimate and reliable and maybe you can infer whether 5500 XT is better choice for you than 1650

Quick Tips for a bit more performance: Enable XMP in the BIOS/UEFI so, the ram runs at max speed. Also drop the Voltage. 1.5V is kinda high and idk why these Boards tend to use it like that, but its absolutley unnecessary.
Also check, that the FCLOCK is set to half the Frequency of the Ram speed. Most 3xxx CPUs can handle a max of 1800-1900 Mhz Fclock. So 3600 Mhz Ram would be the Sweetspot. Ryzen loves high ram speed, because it makes infinityfabric faster.

I thought it was funny when you described botw as "playable". Better frame rates than the original console or the switch is just playable? I'd say more like amazing performance. 70-90 fps is really decent, if it was 40 I could understand the description. Anyways great video man. @Anton X Although I am not the op, for me, games always run better on windows. And Pcsx doesn't even run games for me on linux with same hardware.

Great vid as usual Prime, on my rig just recently got an rx 580 8gb and that thing allows me 15-30 fps in gow at 720 with my ryzen 5 2600, I would image what kind of impressive performance can the 5500xt can do for that one
huh? 5500xt and rx580 are almost the same, and ryzen 2600 is not much different from 3600, you're doing something wrong
Maybe, do you know of any good specific config to use on gow 3?
One thing about these emulation tests that I'd humbly request is if you could do a video about getting games w/special controllers working. For instance how does Guitar Hero I/others perform? Or does it not work at all w/the Guitar? I have seen ps2 to USB adapters...are those supported w/the emulators? In any case, thanks for your efforts here. I really like your videos/content.

5500 XT is perfect for 1080p ultra settings in most games, I'm running mine with an Intel Core i5 8400.

As someone who has a 5700 XT... AMD isn't what it's optimized for.

One extreme cpu-intensive game I'd like to see run on a Ryzen 5 3600 is Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader. Last I checked a few years ago it was tanking 4th gen i7s. Nothing but top end hardware could run that game well.
Just for those who are thinking about doing a build using this GPU - it is rigged for PCIE Gen 4 8x. This means that its performance is limited in a system that supports only PCIE Gen 3. As such, if you want to get the best out of it you would need to base the build around an X570 motherboard as that is currently the only chipset available to consumers that supports PCIE Gen 4. Hardware Unboxed has a video explaining this subject.
Which Nvidia graphics card would you have gone with instead?
basically the same rig i'm currently planning total cost for build around $685 maybe less when finished nice to see how it could work

Coincidentally I got a 5500 xt and just ordered a 3600x for cheap and doubled my RAM to 32GB. Also got a 1TB m.2 drive to match with it.

The thing with gran turismo 4 are that it's not gpu bound but cpu bound.I had an FX 4170 with a 1050 ti and it was a stuttering mess.I upgraded to a ryzen 5 2600 with the 1050 ti and it was smooth 60 fps.I didn't test my 1070 ti yet as i need a better monitor only got 2x 60 hz 1080p monitors.
Love the informed build choice, did any of those games come close to maxing the 3600? I can't help but think you could have saved some money with a 1600 af model since they are on 12nm and run just behind the 2600 now. At least just for emulation, the 3600 value will come from when you want t play PC games or modern titles.
The weirdest issue happened to my system. Started a Big Box based arcade build. Used a Ryzen 3 2200G and it worked great... So i decided to beef it up and overkill it, changing to a 2600X and a RX580. Big Box became stuttery and totally unuseable. Not sure why, but putting the 2200G back in fixed it.... Huh?!?

Would you recommend the 1650 more than the 5500xt. I want a pc for high end emulation in this price point and this build seems great. Just think that maybe an nvidia gpu would be better optimized
Actually if you going for 1650,best choice for you is to just get the 1650S or 5500xt 4GB, since you will most likely spend a little bit more, and the current navi gpu give similar in performance compare to nvidia in emulator(even openGL)

I think so too. Nearly 1.5v yikes. I got my Ryzen 1600 af @ 4 gig 1.37v
The 3600 in stock config without any modifications to voltages, is configured to pull as much voltage as much as it thinks it needs. As a former Intel 4790K user, I also thought that 1,3-1,5 V core voltage is high. I got my 3600 undervolted to run at 1,18125 Core voltage and overclocked it to 4.2 Ghz all core. It runs really well as well with modified PBO settings. I Can't overclock any further since im running it in small form factor build with close to no airflow.

@@madmax2069 It's not , or should i say it's normal for the 3xx0 series. The CPU just pick as much voltage as it needs for that single core boost while it takes much less when running load on multiple cores. This is explained much better by Robert from the r/AMD ( the guy is actually from AMD ) so if you want to have a better idea , just go there

Nice, but still lacking with Pcsx2, I have a I3 9100 and a 1070 on one of my builds and it runs any ps2 game 4k 60fps with no issue.

what do you do with your old stuff? I have a huge box filled with what I basically feel is e-waste, we don't have anything around here to turn in that e-waste to money...just trash it. I don't want to do that. Some of this stuff is worth SOMETHING.
you can enable some graphics packs in cemu, even my 2700x + 1650 super can handle 4320p most of the time in wind waker

From what I heard, dolphin emulator doesn't actually uses gpu, only CPU to render

Hello mate. Same with you that I'm planning to play ps3 games with RPCS3 particularly Persona 5. I'm torn between buying Gtx 1660 super , Rtx 2060 or RX 5600 XT because those are what I can afford here in my country with similar prices. I initially wanted to buy RX 5600 XT because its performance rivals RTX 2060 super at such a cheaper price but was skeptical now since many say that nvidia gpus are better for emulation. Seeing that you use the RX 5500 XT, so presumably RX 5600 XT will perform better? Any advice because I'm torn, will really appreciate a response :D

I can get full speed 3ds emulation on my phone and laptop with integrated graphics, it will definitely work with this PC (not as fast as Nvidia though cuz OpenGL support)
@@techno-- Yes and no it depends I get in Ace Attorney with my Ryzen 7 3700X and RTX 2060 Super Aorus and 32gb of ram between 40-60fps but is also upscale on 2k or 1440p. Some games run at full speed like Pokemon Sun and Moon I can get over 60fps EASY I can get extrem high fps but Ace Attorney is a other thing Citra is really bad optimized for this game.

OpenGL is compatible with the high resolution mode 1920x1080 so what about ditching Windows for Linux on a AMD 3990 processor with 1TiB of Threadripper compatible DDR4 RAM and going with the best emulator package
Can you try some yuzu games, and some more rpcs3 games like the last of us and ratchet and clank plz? It's the ones I'm waiting for and I rly would like to know how this system handles it :)

Do you think the 3rd gen ryzen makes a big difference here? I have a spare Ryzen 2 2200G lying around, should that be sufficient to get relatively similar performance while emulating with the same graphics card?
So it sounds like i can expect similar performance from a R5 2600 and a 1650 super and get me some of the NVENC/NVDEC action going on
I was looking at this CPU, though gutted I missed out on the 3300x as it's half the price and got better single core performance.
Do you have preferred pads when playing emulators? I'm trying to decide if I want to just use Xbox one pads or connect my retro pads.
And for WiiU emulation does it need the WiiU tablet/pad?

What would be the NVIDIA card you would chose for a emulation build ?
I've read a lot about how nvidia cards (and intel cpus) are better for emulation (used to be because better single thread rating, tho i realise that amd chips are now above overkill in that regard) because of compatibility issues, in some cases. Is that not the case anymore? Edit: U did mention it later in the video.. ok, so to adapt my question.. if I swap the 5500xt for an nvidia card, say 1660 super... then it affects everything else (no pcie 4). What would be a good cpu pairing, taking bottlenecks (specifically for increasing internal resolution in emulation, which i presume is different to normal bottleneck calculations for modern pc games) into account?
