There is a bit of lore, I think one of Mox' comments on the lost that implies that their numbers do not seem to go down, no matter how many purifier squads ADVENT is sending in the abandoned cities. Terrifying implications, this carries.

The lost are most likely at least connected to the concept of the Contagion, which appears in XCOM 2: Resurrection book, and based on multiple similarities between Contagion and Lost as they are in War of the Chosen, its pretty likely that Lost are the evolution of the original idea.
The Contagion in Resurrection, much like the Lost is something aliens and advent is wary off - to the point that they create massive exclusion zones around areas with expected Contagion presence (likely said exclusion zones are larger than actual Contagion spread - to the point that before encountering changed animals in France, Amar - MC of the book always thought they were a rumour or Advent lie.Naturally these are valuable to advent as they allow them to create "dead zones", where they can freely abduct and kill members of independent settlements). Both are also vulnerable to fire, and Advent utilises flamethrower equipped units to contain them. 'Alien glow' reistance rumour (named The Contagion in game files) has similar green glow to the one experienced with some of the lost. Firaxis clearly abandoned the imo far more intresting Contagion in favour of run off the mill zombies during WotC development, but this connection is worthwhile of noting, especially as Resurrection is the only extra material which does not outright contridict data in the games (XCOM 2 Factions and XCOM 2 Escalation are a mess)

Zombies might be run of the mill, but they're also easier to code.
Laziness? Maybe. But I think the idea that the Lost and Contagen are connected is a good headcanon.

Another quality video from you to make my day, and on such an interesting topic! The Lost are just another among many reasons why i consider XCOM to be one of the grimmest alien invasion scenario i know of. These whole cities where unnumerable Lost shamble in, only reinforce the feeling that indeed, they are relics of the past. Of OUR past, and that this past, wether we like it or not, is slowly disappearing, by Advent's hand... or our own.

Killed in the first few days of the war. We even see a military base in one of the missions. The tanks are destroyed.
Ones that survived probably went on to join the resistance in XCOM 2 or joined the Reapers.
Law enforcement was disbanded and replaced by ADVENT.

Destroyed by the aliens during the several weeks of open warfare. Aliens had every advantage. Tech, air superiority with constant possibility of CAS from alien ships, logistics (a single "Avenger - type" vessel has the ability to move cargo matching that of a Wasp class, based on it's size. And it can fly at speeds of a transport aircraft, and they had dozens if not hundreds of these), and even numbers - certainly numbers in any localised battle due to mobility advantage.
