What a wonderful story, Thanks for sharing. I have my uncle's flight school yearbook from 1944 Chico,Ca. when he was training in the PT22 and then the BT-13. Sadly, he was lost while flying the BT-13
I was born in 1946, the same year my father went to Texas and purchased an army surplus BT-13 airplane for $50 bucks. He followed route 66 and flew it to Brackett Field here in southern California where he kept it for several years. It became a big part of my childhood and recall frequently asking him, “Once around the pattern Pop?” He passed away in 2010 and this video certainly brings back many wonderful memories that my father and I shared.
bob4jjjj The Irwins still get to fly it, but they display it at the Planes Of Fame Air Museum. Eventually the museum will have full control of the plane but it will still be flying.
My father also bought a BT-13 about 49 or so. Unfortunately he sold his when he left for the Korean war. he often said he wishes he had just tied it down behind the barn for when he got back. Many of these were lost due to the engines being taken for use crop dusters.
I found an old document that I copied from my old neighbor. His father ferried the BT-13 from Downey, CA to Enid, OK along with other pilots Hahn, Smilanich, Emigh, Ament, F. Miller. Melichar, etc. I think his name was ''Ernie'. He also flew the B-17 and P-38. In addition, he flew the 'Hump' from DumDum and also flew for Lockheed with H.S. and T.L. He had a foot locker filled with lots of photos and mementoes. I since have lost touch with him. Sorry I did now.
My dad bought a surplus one in '52. Great flyers. He sold it and bought an Aeronca Chief before I was born. Beautiful job by the restoration crew.

Buster! Took a ride in her in 94. St. George Utah. Was my Uncle's Father in Laws aircraft at the time. Glad she is still ticking!
Very Awesome! Carrying on The Family Legacy!
What a beautiful a/c and restoration. Long may it live on for future generations.

50 bucks. Holy shit man! Even in those days that was a crazy deal!!! I mean they basically gave him the plane!!!
Awesome story! The BT-13 is definitely on my list to either fly or even own one day. It's such a cute little airplane!
what a great story
so happy this was shared with us
thank you

Thank you for posting.
Very nice! You had a Great Dad !
Amazing
Great story!
I so want to learn how to fly still. I once missed a chance to hike pikes peak with your dad and Rick Broome
Cool machine and keeping it in the air is a good thing. No point in having one and keeping it in the hanger!

Just curious, was Ed Roman part of this planes history?
Is that Kermit's A-26 in the background???
Evan K It is.
