Wow! I watched this game from our berthing space on the USS Saratoga (CV-60) via AFRTS while anchored off Naples Italy! I couldn't believe I was getting to watch it live lol. It was pretty late at night... and I was jumping around while trying not to make any noise as others were already racked out. What a great memory! Thanks for posting

Keith Jackson, in what I remember as his last time in a football broadcast booth, visiting during a CFP final no less, provided some traditional perspective. He lamented in so many words the shift from the old bowl system, where the sport every so often just had to live with a split AP vs. Coaches Poll championship. Plus, there was the potential if the rankings dominoes fell an unusual way (i.e. '83 Miami) that a team as low as #5 could top the polls on Jan 2.
College football was much more seen as a game, not a be-all/end-all Masters of the Universe ultimate contest. I love non-semifinal Rose Bowls for that very reason. On Jan 1, 1986 Terry Donahue's 4-loss UCLA put a then annual PAC-10 beat down on Chuck Long's Hawkeyes. It was no less special to the Bruins than Oklahoma's national championship win over Penn State was to the Sooners.

This is the first time I saw the stadium. We were on a shopping trip from southern ohio and dove by and could see inside all the red. Ill never forget that sight. We watched a lot of it in Sun TV. I remember seeing Carter make a great catch.

Iowa had some good NJ/NY recruiting, starting with Andre Tippett abd continuing through these years. And this is when the Buckeyes were 80% Ohio recruits.

    • @jeromeseymour

Yes, I think the crowd noise had more of a impact on Iowa, than the rain. If the game was played in Iowa City, the Hawkeyes would've probably won.

The uniforms. The contrast of styles for each team. The Horseshoe before renovation and luxury suites.
Football was so much better back then.

I was at this game and remember it like it was yesterday. I was 14 and my dad had got some kind of package deal that included breakfast at a hotel not far from our house and a bus ride to and from the game. Looking back it encompassed 3 of his favorite things - eating, watching the Buckeyes, and not dealing with game day traffic lol. I also remember THE RAIN. I swear it poured buckets all day long. Our seats were near the top of A deck so we were under cover from C deck, with an occasional mist, which actually felt good because it was pretty warm that day. There were Iowa fans in the row in front of us who got rained on plus got the overflow from C deck above. I felt bad for them. After the game I so badly wanted to run on to that wet field and slide around but my dad wouldn't let me because he said we'd miss the bus. Well, we got back to the bus and the guy who had organized the tour was soaked because he HAD run on to the field to celebrate. What a fun game to have been a part of.

I had forgotten that the shoe was originally built without lights. On rainy or snowy days the only lighting was the field lights meant for security. Also, what about the poor drainage on the old astro-turf field.

I miss the days when they used to rip the goal post down. I only remember a few because when I was growing up they started putting cops around the goal posts

    • @jimegan6848
      @jimegan6848 2 года назад +1

I think there were enough concussions, bloody noses, and broken bones that encouraged not just the use of cops but a redesign of goal posts. Still, parading the uprights through the streets in some cases must have been a lot of fun.

Exactly, Iowa had a bad game that day. I'll give the Buckeyes some credit, they had a good team, but the rain, and the crowd noise helped them win.

    • @FireDude13

That's why they play the game. Buckeyes just had their mojo working that game. And it didn't hurt to have 2 eventual NFL Pro Bowlers playing... (Carter was named to 8 and Spielman 4).

I had student season tickets in 84 & 85 and part of 97 (you could not buy a whole season ticket as a student by then). This might be the best game I attended--ran down to the field and somehow found myself running up 17th avenue with the field goal post! What an incredible performance by Chris Spielman

Can't believe how much yellow I'd in the crowd . Hawkeyes travel well. Freezing Rain . 🌧 big 10 old school. Jimmy Karsatos - Chris Carter -,Spelman- Cooper - Workman. I think they beat TX AM in cotton bowl that year. Back in the day MICHIIGAN OWNED OHIO STATE

    • @loufancelli1330

I was at this game, and most of the yellow was worn by OSU fans in the form of ponchos, which were pretty much all yellow back then. It was actually pretty warn that day, around 70. And The Game was in the midst of one of, if not its most, even era of all time. Earle Bruce who was in year 7 of his 9 year period as OSU's HC, finished 5-4 against ttun.
