I was nine that year too, and I also remember this game well, but I had jumped on the bandwagon at the beginning of the season. Some neighborhood kids needed cannon fodder for their sandlot football games in the late summer of '68, and even though I was a couple of years younger than them and a good bit smaller, I was recruited. They must have been hard up for another warm body because I knew almost nothing about football at first, but I learned. Watching all of those Rose Bowls over the next ten years from the frozen tundra of Central Ohio must have had an effect on me, because I ended up retiring to SoCal. I still follow Ohio State, though.
Weeks earlier it was debatable who was number one, then USC were tied by Notre Dame. A headline in a Lorain, Ohio newspaper read: Who’s number one now? This game nailed it for Ohio State. I believe the team with Jack Tatum, Kern, & Brockington we’re better.
Great resolution on the video. The 2 best teams in the nation squared-off, and Ohio State was clearly the better team (and I was a USC fan). Hard-hitting defense on both sides. Jim Otis was a tank...
One the few times under Woody that OSU didn’t lose the Rose Bowl with the national championship on the line. Unlike the 1971, ‘73, ‘75 and ‘76 games. Team also lost in 1980 in the first year playing for his successor, Earle Bruce.
I'm no fan of Hayes, but let's tell the whole history. He and Ohio State won national championships by winning the Rose Bowl in '55 and '58 and '69, and the Matt Snell-Paul Warfield team won without attending the bowl in '62. Four national titles in 14 seasons and three by winning Rose Bowls.
Lots of future NFL players in this game Simpson Bills,Tatum Raiders,Sensibaugh Cheifs,Kern Colts,Hayden Vikings,White Bills,Otis Cheifs and Cardinals,Rossovich Eagles,Battle Jets,Cowlings Bills,McCollough Lions,Brockington Packers,Stillwagon played in Canada was 2nd round pick by the Packers, and a lot of other players.
This was proabably the most evenly matched Big Ten vs. Pac 10 (or Pac 8 in this case) Rose Bowl where you knew that the winner would be named the National Champion. I know the USC Wisconsin game was only a 5 point margin but it wasn't exactly that close. This one took until the 3rd quarter before the Super Sophomores broke away.
16:52 Color analyst Al DeRogatis: "watch that block by his fullback Scott." lol Fullback Scott (#38) clearly didn't block anybody...OJ made most of it happen by sharply cutting back against the grain of the defensive pursuit. To his credit, the fullback didn't block anyone, but followed the play and helped lead the convoy into the end zone.
As a Freshman at Northwestern, I was privileged to watch both teams play my beloved Wildcats. Our marching band actually played for OJ by the end of our first home game of the 1968 season.
Yeah, that TD was bogus. If anything, it was an INT, or in today's game with video replay they might have ruled the DB didn't possess it all the way to the ground, so incomplete. No way it was a TD. In slo-mo it's obvious the receiver didn't take the ball away until the DB landed a yard out of bounds.

A few OSU players are wearing gray helmets (instead of silver). See Jan White at 21:44 Maybe the football budget wasn't quite so big then? (You can see both at 31:28 ).
They transitioned to the silver helmets after the '67 season. Some preferred the previous helmet design. They were unable to find a suitable silver paint so they went with the closest they could find-gray.
Also the very plain jerseys with no stripes on the sleeves or names on the back. Leaves were obviously a lot harder to get back then too, and the consistency in where and how to place them hadn't yet evolved. The stars on the team had maybe a half dozen leaves, and that was at the end of an undefeated season.
More so in the first half, and one play in particular. Otherwise they kept him pretty well contained. In the second half he ran wild a few times with the ball laying on the ground behind him.
Your best achieving team, your best team was the following season but something happened to them. Something that would start the greatest ten year stretch of any rivalry in college football. See you in Ann Arbor this November. I'm not trying to be cocky it's ANYONE'S game this year again. We both have plenty to be excited about our at programs, and IT'S ON.
It was a common tactic to “flex” defensive tackles. Theoretically it made option blocking more difficult by allowing the defenders to read and react better.
Yep, and back when guys were allowed to make a good stick without having to worry if the offensive player is about to duck his head. Mind reading is a must these days.
68 Ohio State team averaged 33 points a game. 33 points would have been enough to beat Michigan in 69 and Stanford in '71 Rose. Ones that got away from many of these same players.
love how the refs are literally right there on top of the players right after the play is over to make sure it’s downed at the exact spot. today’s refs just sit back & casually jog in. perhaps that’s why there are so many issues.
The TD call at end of game is the worst call I have ever seen in my life in a Bowl Game. How the hell was that a USC TD? Imagine if that was a game winning TD called?
O.J. Talented , shifty and fast but alas 2 fumbles and a key HB interception by him. OSU dominated. Relative to era, some say this OSU team was and still is the greatest in college history along with the 1947 Michigan "Mad Magicians" team with its sophisticated offense and vast array of plays.
Football has not changed hardly at all...except for goal posts with only one leg instead of 2 and the fact that there were no emotion sucking, boring , time consuming reviews by officials up in "the booth" & on the field.
If there had been replay officials back then, the final score would have been 27-10. USC's last touchdown was laughably bogus when viewed in slo-mo and would have been overruled.
Jack Tatum is remembered as the hard hitting cheap shot artist (I don't think so) who paralyzed Reggies Rucker but Mike Sensibaugh the other safety still holds the career (22) and season (9) interception records.
@@fredkruse9444 And Tatum never expressed a bit of regret. Never so much as sent Stingley a get well card. The stupid thing is that it happened in a pre season game. Tatum is perhaps the best example of a scum bag that ever existed.
Stingley's broken neck was Steve Grogan's fault. You're gonna throw a 'slant in' you'd better throw it like a dart, RIGHT AT THE GUY. Or even a little behind him. But having him DIVE into a crowded secondary less than 20 yards downfield? You're risking a serious injury even if Mother Teresa is playing free safety.
That was a terrible call at the end giving usc that td! But it didn’t really matter after the pounding we put on them throughout the 2nd - 4th quarters! Go Bucks!
I can't understand that call for the life of me. The Southern Cal guy didn't appear to catch the ball, and in any event, he was completely out of bounds.
The ref saw both players getting control of the ball at the same instant, if the Ohio State defender touched it first. And they said the Trojan receiver was inbounds by an inch when both nabbed the ball. Rule says if both teams catch it at the same moment, the catch is given to the offense. Imagine if the game had hinged on that play!
Brian what are you talking about? The USC receiver never ever had anything resembling possession and was waaaaaaaaay out of bounds. Horrible horrible call.
@@brianarbenz7206 Watch the play in slo-mo. It's very clear. The DB (#3) intercepted the ball with his feet in bounds and landed on his back out of bounds. The USC receiver, who was out of bounds the whole time, then took the ball away from the DB after the DB was on the ground a yard out of bounds. If they had replay like today it would have been ruled an INT, or I suppose it's possible they could say the DB didn't maintain possession all the way through to the ground, so incomplete pass. The one thing it was absolutely NOT was a TD catch. It's no wonder the DB (Sensibaugh) acted like he couldn't believe what he was hearing.
It just hit me like a tidal wave of truth in the sea of synchronicity (what the hek does that mean ?) lol , It means *OJ Simpson* is not the big story here (imo) the real gem in this treasure trove of gridiron titans (oh boy) is Ohio States *safety's Mike Sensibaugh & Jack Tatum* = WOW & POW !
The whole feel of the telecast and the game, is different from today. Great play-by-play calling. Southern Cal's defense was fast-pursuing. Anytime Ohio State ran outside, there were bunches of Trojans waiting, or on the runner. I remember watching this game when I was 10.

See you in Ann Arbor this November. I'm not trying to be cocky it's ANYONE'S game this year again. We both have plenty to be excited about our at programs, and IT'S ON.
❤😂
USC and OJ looked like shit in that game
Why are the Bucks Defensive front lining up 2 yards off the line of scrimmage lol
@Matt P: Has this been confirmed ?
It was a common tactic to “flex” defensive tackles. Theoretically it made option blocking more difficult by allowing the defenders to read and react better.
Otis my man! OJ = 2 fumbles + 1 interception. PS Hey #15, that was a touchback not a touchdown.
O.J. Made some great runs. The problem is that a couple of times he forgot to take the ball with him.
Giggles....should of been 27 - 10....more giggles!!!
Was John Brockington on the Ohio State roster in 68?
Yes.
He was not only on the roster, he was in the game and got some carries.
It’s funny how much football has and hasn’t changed over the years.
Oh yes it has. Buckeyes have an awesome passing attack now. Back then it 3 yards and a cloud of dust. Woody Hayes hated the passing game.
@@stevelenores5637 woody hayes once said in passing three thing can happen two of them are bad
Back in the days when guys knew how to tackle.
Yep, and back when guys were allowed to make a good stick without having to worry if the offensive player is about to duck his head. Mind reading is a must these days.
@@steelbuck6777 My saying is "this is back when football had hair on its chest."😁
@@Northstadiumhusker change it to “ back when people didn’t care about their health”
@@__yklim The old question of "What price glory?"
The huge fullback Jim Otis 210 pounds lol
Back then, 210 was huge for a fullback. Linemen averaged around 230-240.
@@Northstadiumhusker LATE 1960s LINEMEN AVG.MORE LIKE 220 - 225
68 Ohio State team averaged 33 points a game. 33 points would have been enough to beat Michigan in 69 and Stanford in '71 Rose. Ones that got away from many of these same players.
Appreciate this. Thanks.
jim stark , yes ! the fullback blocked claude raines , the invisible man .
love how the refs are literally right there on top of the players right after the play is over to make sure it’s downed at the exact spot. today’s refs just sit back & casually jog in. perhaps that’s why there are so many issues.
Spotting the ball is the last issue today’s refs have a problem with
The TD call at end of game is the worst call I have ever seen in my life in a Bowl Game.
OJ could make the cuts too.
Len Ford
The Montana led 1977 ND team has an enormous edge at QB over this Ohio State team.
@@KMK7355 bunk. The 1977 nd team lost at least 1 game and did not even deserve the NC that season, imo.
Nope. 2001 Miami Hurricanes. 11 1st round picks, 2Heisman finalists and a HOFer.
Ya can't squeeze that juice !
OH!
I O!
@@NURREDIN let's go!
Imagine if that had decided the ‘75 Rose Bowl!
Jack Tatum is remembered as the hard hitting cheap shot artist (I don't think so) who paralyzed Reggies Rucker but Mike Sensibaugh the other safety still holds the career (22) and season (9) interception records.
Darryl Stingley
@@fredkruse9444 And Tatum never expressed a bit of regret. Never so much as sent Stingley a get well card. The stupid thing is that it happened in a pre season game. Tatum is perhaps the best example of a scum bag that ever existed.
Tatum played hard and hit hard. No cheap shots!!!
He paralyzed Darryl Stingley. Get it right.
Yes should of been..
27-10
Today, the running backs are bigger than the linemen were back then, and today’s linemen are faster than most of the running backs in 1969..
Who is here to see if O.J. Simpson murders somebody?😢
The whole feel of the telecast and the game, is different from today.
Great play-by-play calling. Southern Cal's defense was fast-pursuing. Anytime Ohio State ran outside, there were bunches of Trojans waiting, or on the runner. I remember watching this game when I was 10.
YES!!!!!
OJ could run, but he was a terrible football player. He does nothing to help anybody else when the ball is going to someone else. He was lazy.
So. He was built to run with a ball in his hands and thats what he did you dumas
Buckeyes beat USC
OJ was terrible in this game.
