    This video I show the symptoms that's involved with a Briggs single cylinder Intek engine that has a oil consumption problem brought on by a bad head gasket. you may also notice that there could be some oil leaking cost by the same problem of the headgasket pressurizing the oil crankcase causing weaker seals to allow oil to come out. however, the most prevalent symptom is burning oil roughly 4 to 8 ounces in 45 minutes of runtime at full throttle. I hope this helps out and good luck

    Thank you Briggs & Stratton for incorporating planned obsolescence into the design of these engines. Last time we had this gasket replaced it cost several hundred dollars. I will do it myself this time, but am a little weary of adjusting the lifters. Seems like these gaskets only last about five years. Wonderful design!

    My 21 hp just started this a week ago, right after the PM. Thought it was something I did. Briggs should have issued a recall for a design flaw. Anyhow, is the fix using the same quality gasket they used during assembly? Is there a beefier gasket on the market? Judging by bolt placement, there isn't enough clamping force in the problematic area. It's going to blow the gasket again. Kudos on the video. Very nice and informative.

    Great video! I talked to a small engine shop today. Husky briggs and stratton intek mower is only 3 years old. He told me I needed new motor because of rings. Glad I watched your video. ? Can I continue to use my mower until i have the time to replace the head gasket as long as i watch the oil level.

    Actually the excessive crankcase pressure is pushing oil out through the crankcase ventilation tube into the air intake then through carburetor into the intake manifold. Notice how the carburetor is an oily mess. The purpose of the crankcase ventilation system is to relieve crankcase pressure. The oil is not going past the rings from the bottom side of piston. If engine had that much pressure on bottom side of rings it would be pushing piston from both sides and couldnt run.

    • @Foxboss9
      @Foxboss9  5 лет назад +1

      Although that can happen that is not what the case was here. The carburetor is a Dusty mess because of the dusty mowing conditions in which it was exposed to. There is no oil in or out of the carburetor. The reason that your theory is incorrect when the mower shown in the video is because nothing in which you are referring to would explain the missing material on the head gasket. The pressure was not being pushed past the Rings and into the crankcase. The pressure was being pushed from the combustion side of the Piston surface into the crankcase via the leaking head gasket.

    Yep, same thing here, planned obsolescence... A Stiga park mower that we use with a snow blower attachment during the winter. 3rd gasket change coimng up, overpressure in the crankcase, dip stick tube spewing oil everywhere. Other typical symptoms: smoky exhaust, hard to start and a sort of muffled knocking sound from the engine. The same problem spot as shown here where the head gasket clamping force is weak.
    Was worked hard the last time it was used (heavy snowfall few weeks back) and I was thinking the gasket might let go, today the symptoms. what a piece of ****.

    Yep mowing along on my Cub Cadet LT1018 18.5 hp new (oil change) smoke started, stopped left engine running Had oil (a lot of oil) coming out of a small screened hole in fuel pump removed oil filler cap (with engine running) pow oil spray about, drove 25 yards to garage shut iy down Have gas in my brand new oil and filter pulled head off yep blown it the weak point by the pushrods. Its an older 2004.w/298 hrs. Hope Briggs redesigned this head and/or the friken gasket!

    I would like to say that doing a leak down test is helpful to make sure its not valves or rings.
    I do not recommend buying the head gasket from Amazon. I did and they ship it in an envelope and it got folded over. There are some aftermarket head gaskets that are thicker than OEM. Not sure if they work better. I like to use Permatex copper spray on the head gasket.

    Great video. Well explained. I have EXACT same symptoms with my Intek. Smoking at start up, not too much while riding. Then after sitting, a puddle under engine (oil seepage out exhaust). Hoping it's the head gasket and not rings as I've never had to top off oil before. Valvetrain replaced this summer

    Great shows for learning… ok so I have the twin Intec OHV 22 hp Craftsman Pro series from 2010 and this spring it started dripping oil from the R cylinder area, with oil dripping from the inner side of the head gasket area onto the outer exhaust canister smoking... I just changed the head gasket in accordance with proper maint. and now I mowed today and same symptoms ... OH BTW I took the dipstick out and thought I might try to add some oil as its been dripping and smoking... it was running... it sprayed so much oil mist under great pressure and I closed it quick! makes me think of the blow by mentioned here? Any helpful thoughts are welcome. Guess I need to reinspect that old head gasket again. Or is it a valve guide moved, I heard of that too? Thx in advance

    I had a little smoke coming up from the top of motor and smoke in the dipstick tube after running and getting motor hot. took heads off and I can't see any damage to the gasket?? replaced crankcase gasket already because it was leaking, there was definite damage to that gasket. Piston is not loose, so I guess piston rings are, O.K.?? definitely a lot of crust on the top of pistons. Is there anything else that causes smoke in dipstick tube??

  • @kennethwise7108
    @kennethwise7108 5 лет назад +2

    Wow, I had the same problem as described and started tearing it apart only to discover that the gasket was the culprit. Seems like a dumb design as the head bolts arent 360 (circular) and are more like a "C" pattern, NO WONDER!
    20' LBS of torque for the head bolts seems a little low but I'll adhere to it I guess...
    My lower pushrod (intake) was aluminum and the upper one (exhaust) was steel. Wonder why they chose to use two different types of materials for the pushrods in these engines? I might add that these things are EXTREMELY loud too! Almost gotta wear double hearing protection!

  • @altermad

    Thanks for the tip! even after doing this after 8 years its nice to see "other ways" Setting up a leak down test can be a PITA and can give strewed results if the pressure by passes into crankcase.

    why do they always fail where the push rod goes? i changes mine on my snowblower and i suspect that it blew again... another symptom that you didn't mentioned is to have exhaust fumes coming from the crankcase/dipstick. i smelled my dipstick and it smelled like burned gasoline, thats when i knew i had a problem

    I understand these head gaskets are notorius for going bad in pretty much the same area on different small engines. Does the side of the gasket that typically goes bad the side that faces up towards the head or down towards the block. I thought mine was bad but the side facing up towards head looked ok or at least no obvious signs of breach. Thoughts?

The repair wen well & no more smoke.

    • @Foxboss9
      @Foxboss9  4 года назад +1

      Well, there's pressure in the crankcase that will cause the dipstick to push out. Could be the reason that it didn't before was because the head gasket was allowing the crankcase pressure to be released at that point.

    Great video. I have a briggs and strat that had a blown head gasket. Changed the gasket and adjusted valves. New spark plug. Did oil change while I was at it. Fires right up now but when warmed up it starts sputtering. Then when I turn the blades on oil starts dripping out of fuel pump screen!?? I am ordering new fuel pump also. Did the gasket csuse my pump to go out too or just coincidence? Also can oil get in carburetor and gum it up? Was going to change it with a new one if so. The carb that's on it now seems to need a special wrench to get bowl off?

    • @Foxboss9
      @Foxboss9  5 лет назад +1

      If the head gasket blows it could pressure rice and put oil past the diaphragm in your fuel pump but that seems to be relatively rare. You could also have gotten blowback into the carburetor but you'll have to get the fuel bowl off to clean that out to know for sure.

    I just bought a used cub cadet and it has the Briggs 24HP ELS 725 OHV and the man I bought it off of is very very persistent about changing oil, filters, belts, etc. The oil that is in it is about as clear as water....for a 2004 it has been very well maintained, however when I got it home and mowed after the engine heated up I could smell a freshly burning oil smell. I took the good of and got intimate with her. lol 😝 I went over the whole engine in search of a leak or a spot that may have accumulated over time and the only thing I could find that looked like it could cause the smell was under the valve covers around the exhaust manifolds on both side there is charred on oil... that being said do you think it’s a safe bet that it’s the valve cover gaskets or head gasket ? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I want to fix ASAP. Thanks 🙏

      If it's spitting fuel out the carburetor while it's running then you have a problem with your intake valve. Either it needs to be adjusted or it needs to be reseated or it is sticking. All of those things take a little bit of skill. And most likely removing the intake valve.

I haven't been burning oil that I've noticed and I pulled the plug and it seems very dry and not fouled. • @Foxboss9
      @Foxboss9  4 года назад

      The only reason that it would smoke after you turn it off is because you're leaking something hot onto the exhaust. I would expect that it's probably oil leaking from maybe a valve cover but if you're noticing a slight loss in power it could be a head gasket starting to push out.

    • @Foxboss9
      @Foxboss9  4 года назад

      There's a chance also that it could be leaking from the sump gasket which requires the engine to be removed or maybe one of the PTO gaskets meaning the bottom seal or top seal on the crank.

    What if its blown pointing outside? And its not burning oil?
    Im on a 24hp vtwin briggs and its making a loud noise, I thought it was exhaust gaskets blown, but I checked and installed new ones and that didnt stopped it from making that loud sound. I checked valves and set valve lash correctly.
    Then I started the mower (zero turn Husqv Z254) and it kept making the same noise. I carefully listened where it was coming from, I only could identify it was from the left, upper cylinder but couldnt identify where exactly in this cylinder the noise was coming from.
    When you start it, and the electric starter is turning the engine you can hear a bop bop bop and that made me suspect it could be the head gasket, and that it wasnt the connecting rod hitting. So now Im teariing it apart to see.

    I have a 6.75 briggs with a blown head gasket to the point where a fair amount of oil coming out the muffler. It will run, but blows a fair amount of oil out the muffler and of course smokes allot. With the head gasket blown, would that not make the compression low as well? I checked the compression before I checked the head gasket, and if I remember correctly it was around 80.

      Douglas Bell blown headgaskets definitely would make compression lower if the gasket breach is around the cylinder however a gasket failure somewhere else on the head could allow crankcase pressure to be released along with oil... None the less the head gasket needs replaced..

    • @dbell6751
      @dbell6751 7 лет назад +1

      Thanks for your response. Just wanted to be sure, as I didn't want to replace the piston and rings. That would cost about $80 and thats about all the mower is worth. At least the head gasket isn't too expensive. What did you mean by "however a gasket failure somewhere else on the head could allow crankcase pressure to be released along with oil"? The head gasket on the valve side was pretty much gone, like nothing there. So I think your explanation in your video explained exactly what is happening to my engine. Where crankcase pressure was created.

      Douglas Bell basically what I was saying is it sounds like a head gasket is needed and that a compression check, although a good measure, don't always come up bad even when a head gasket has failed..

    Will this make it hard to start with backfire through carb and gas in the oil in crank case????

    • @johnking641
      @johnking641 5 лет назад

      that sounds like the electronic gas shut off valve is sticking open----if you have a lot of gas in the oil guarantee you that is the problem------try removing it from the bottom of the carb bowl and work the needle a bunch and clean it with solvent it should usually start performing normal again

    I have this exact mower and it was running great and it suddenly stalled. Also, oil and gas were leaking onto the deck. It hasn't run since. Any experience with this ?

    • @Foxboss9
      @Foxboss9  5 лет назад

      Look for the leak source... Could be a blown engine or just siezed up...

    I'm assuming this is my issue, mines a 15.5 and its blowing smoke out of the breather tube. I was thinking it was that but the smoke is very heavy and thick. Would you think it's my head gasket and do you by chance know if its the same gasket as your link?

    THE CAUSE IS THE LITTLE O-RING SEALING ABOVE THE NEEDLE & SEAT WHERE THE PLASTIC SEALS TO THE BODY ON THAT CHEAP JUNK NIKKI CARBURETOR... Dont fix THAT and you'll do this over and over again. it leaks fuel into the cylinder and that fuel hydaulics when you start it and it blows the gasket. If it wasnt for leaking gas that motor would never blow that gasket. It doesnt have enough compression.

    an ex gf bought one brand new 3 years ago . simplicity mf zero turn . the head gasket didn't even last 3 seasons before it started blowing blue smoke . this issues needs to be taken to court and a law**suit . its obviously a manufacture default defective product

    • @carmichaelmoritz8662
      @carmichaelmoritz8662 4 года назад +1

      its also obvious that they know of this issue and still remain to sell these defective products . and the warranty hrs proves this without a doubt . the head gasket is known to fail after said amount of running hrs .

    Wrong, the pressure is made in the crankcase and it make is way to the carburetor by the blow by hose and then the engine burn the oil as it enter in the combustion chamber with the air/gaz. Those engine are craps, it is like they forget to put a head bolt exactly where the head gasket leak. Thank you made in china!!

    I have exact same tractor and I'm getting gasoline in my oil crankcase. When is far as to get a new carburetor and I've changed the head gasket. Still getting gas in crankcase. By chance any ideas?

    • @Foxboss9

      Put a fuel shut off valve(like this one amzn.to/2ulpn49) between the carb and gas tank.. Make sure to shut it off after you are done using the mower ..
