Thank you so much for this video. The reel was taken apart previously, I bought it used. Some parts were installed wrong. Your video help me especially the concave washers. The schematic doesn't show that well. I really appreciate you.
You re welcome Jose. You were also lucky that a customer brought one into the sho for repair. Test enabled me to do the video. Best wishes. I'm glad it helped you - Dennis
I don’t much care for reels with plastic gears either conventional or spinning. I don’t know enough about this type of reel to be a fan or detractor. One thing is for sure - Dennis, you do good work!
Most all level wind reels have a plastic idler gear and it is the weak point of the system. the level wind function needs some give and flexibility and two metal gears would eventually grind away. These work fine unless someone gets snagged and tries to crank their way out. Best to pull on the caught line with your hand to try and free it - Stay well Chris - Dennis
Great video. Thanks! It took me awhile to figure out that my left-hand reel is configured differently - the geometry of the dogs is opposite your illustration. Also the anti-reverse collar has plastic side up instead of down.
Great video. I have a reel that the drag seems to be stuck. Probably stored a very long time with the drag set right. If I disassemble and lube drag washers would they be ok, or do you recommend replacing washers? Thank you.
You can usually just disassemble, clean and re-lube the drag washers. You need to replace these if they are worn or torn. As long as the original ones have minor wear and are flexible, they can be reinstalled - Dennis
i got this reel brand new as a gift took it out the box and a few cranks just to see how it feel and have a similar issue where it will wind and then doesnt any reason to why that may be
Have you had a Penn Rival come in for service yet? I wondered what your opinion of those would be as I just got one and am hoping it would have available spare parts like the older Penn reels.
Yes. I don't like that series. The Rival and Defiance reels and you can add the Warfare, and forget the Wrath, are entry level Penn reels that don't meet my expectations for lasting Penn quality. Replacement parts are available through Mysticparts.com should you need them. - Thanks for asking - Dennis
Hello I bought one new and when you turn the handle their is a play like something is loose inside. Is there anything wrong or it’s just how the reel made. Thanks.
If this is within the 1 year warranty period, I would return the reel for service or replacement. It is hard to speculate on why it is loose, but the reel should feel firm and tight. Dennis
Hello sir. I just ordered this same reel. I will be doing off bank and some surf fishing with it. I just wanted to see what rod you would recommend for it. 80 percent is going to be fresh water like gar and channel cat maybe some striper. Thank you and thanks for all your great videos. Chris
Penn makes some nice complementary rods like the Squadron. Daiwa, Shimano, Okuma and Shakespeare also have nice products. Best to check what the local folks are using for length and action and then try out a few different manufacturers to see how the rod feels in your hand - Dennis
I am not aware of a gear swap for this reel. Check with the folks at Mysticparts.com they may know as they are a Penn parts distributor. Thanks for asking - Dennis
I like your videos however sometimes the camera is not in the right place. When you're reinstalling some parts it's off camera. Good videos, enjoyable and I'm learning, thanks!
Thanks for the feedback Steve. I just got a new camera with a flexible display, so I will hopefully do a better job of keeping the work in frame going forward. Best wishes - Dennis
I bought one used. When the clicker is on, spool will not spin, unless the drag is all the way down. Is this normal? Do you have any idea what the issue could be? Thanks a bunch!
The click can cause the spool to be hard to turn. Make sure you spool adjuster allows for a little side to side play in the spool. That may free it up somewhat, but it will take time for it to work into a smoother groove - Dennis
Hmmm - I am not that familiar with the set up. I will try to find one in the parts bins. I looked at the schematic. Is ti possible that the click tongue is installed upside down?
Dennis, I have a Penn Squall 30 LW . I have not opened it up but I want to service it as it has been in service 2 seasons. Is this Warfare 30 LW similar to my Squall ? Or should I follow along with the Squall 15 LW . I don’t see a video for my specific reel. As always your videos and commentary are superb! Thanks for doing this and sharing your knowledge. Rocky Ozella
Not sure I understand the question. Are you asking about how the handle crack turns kicks the trip back from free spool? That cannot be removed. If it is something else, please ask the question another way. Dennis
Thanks for the quick reply, when I cast my warfare, it locks up sometimes, don’t know if I’m casting hard but the auto engages itself, wanted to know if there a way to bypass the auto engagements, my Penn Squall II Level Wind Conventional Reel don’t do it
It is not too difficult. You would need to remove both side plates. After you remove the line guide cap and pawl, you can unfasten the "E" clip that holds the worm gear shaft on from the gear side. Once the clip is removed, you can push the worm gear out through the non-gear side of the reel. Dennis
Call the parts supplier and explain the problem. I imagine the 20 is shorter than the 30. Make sure that the model and version that you are ordering is correct. 42-war20lwlc and it is different from others. Dennis
Hi Dennis, I'm trying to rebuild a Penn Rival 20LW for a friend and was using this Warfare video as the closest reference that I could find, as well as the correct schematic. The reel is very rough when cranking and will lock up intermittently. It seems the problem is around the clutch recover assembly. it looks like the dimple on the clutch recover plate (bridge side) is hitting the eccentric jack and it stops turning. I'm reassembling using the schematic and feel that I have the correct sequence but clearly something is wrong and I'm stuck. I've got more time trying to figure this out then I'd like to admit! As a side note, the entire clutch recovery assembly seems problematic and dependent on a flimsy spring, it doesn't strike me as a very robust design. If you have any thoughts or suggestions of common pitfalls they would be appreciated. I realize I'm not giving you much to go on!!!
Something is not right if it is rough cranking. It sounds like the A/R dogs may not be installed properly. They each have a fork at the end. One side of the fork rides above the click ratchet and one side rides below with that click ratchet between them. Often times that fork is not installed properly and that will lead to rough cranking. Also pay attention to the orientation of both dogs when installing. It is easy to reverse them by turning one upside down, I am not sure what part you are referring to as the clutch recovery assembly. Do you mean the yoke and jack that attaches to the free spool release eccentric? - Dennis
@@2ndChanceTackle Thank you for replying. I got it all back together this morning, sort of. I thought all was good except the main gear is rubbing against the side plate when I close it up, causing friction while cranking. Everything seems to be seated properly on the shaft, can't figure out why this is happening, driving me bananas. The schematic calls it clutch recovery, I think it kicks the reel out of free spool when cranking, it sits just above the bridge and below the A/R ratchet. I'm clear on the dogs. Thanks again, it's become personal challenge to fix this thing!
penn rival 30lwlclh The line counter will not work at all. I. Was wondering if you've. Done A video. On this? As i have scrolled Through them and cannot find it
I have not done a video on it. Chances are that the plastic wheel drive for the line counter is worn or that the assembly is jammed with dirt. You would need to by the replacement assembly to fix the issue - Dennis
That first screw you took out is killing me right now! I'm trying to adjust the handle length for my girlfriend to get more torque while reeling and the little sucker will not budge a single bit. When I saw you unscrew it with ease, my jaw dropped. Any tips? You turn to the left, correct? thanks!
It is likely to be a dirty A/R clutch. Remove the clutch and collar. Wipe the collar clean. It there is grease or dirt inside the clutch, rinse it with rubbing alcohol and let it dry (you can use a hair blow dryer to expedite the drying time, and then reinstall. That should solve your problem - Dennis
I don't have that reel in my shop Kevin. I will add that to the request list. If you cannot wait, get the schematic diagram here www.mysticparts.com/Assets/images/pennparts/schematics/rvl30lw.pdf You all need to remove both side plates and the line guide pawl. Once you have done that, you will notice a "C" clip on the gear side worm shaft. Take that clip off and the assembly will pull out from the other (non-gear) side - Dennis
I guess you would need to ask Penn that question. I think the modern market has come to expect the level wind feature and that is the market they service. I don't like the line guides and avoid them on my deep sea reels. - Thanks for the note - Dennis
@@2ndChanceTackle yess I went back and took it apart and one of the parts was upside down so I turned it over and it was smooth as butter thank you for making these videos great help 🙏
That single screw system is not as reliable on the graphite case reels. There is a lot of flex in those cases and that leads to frame twist if the side plate is not bolted down. Thanks

Also one more question. My line guide is stuck to one side. Do you think my pawl is bad? Awesome video
It would most likely be the pawl. Is the worm gear turning? If not, then it could be the idler gear that drives the worm gear - Dennis
